I'd say more like a little sister.

I'd go more with younger sister, but more importantly, I think Mal is drawn to Kaylee because of her innocence and enthusiasm and optimism, her fundamental belief in the goodness of the people around her. She still has all of the qualities that Mal lost (or at least buried for a good long while) in Serenity Valley. I think she reminds him of what he used to have, and even though his experience has made him more cynical about life, he feels the need to protect her.

That's why I'd go with the little sister analogy. I think Mal recognizes something of who he used to be in Kaylee, and wants to keep her from having to learn some of the harder life lessons that he had to learn.

The woods are the only place where I can see a clear path.

THEREALME

I agree entirely, Truthseeker.

Most importantly, I do NOT see anything romantic between them. As we have seen, Mal sort of shuts down when romance is involved, and gets all distant. At least he does with Inara. And he was doing that with the whores in Heart of Gold, being all business. At least until Nandi showed him her guns...

But we have seen Mal playfully tease, and even hug Kaylee.

Mal also calls Kaylee "Xiao Mei Mei", translated somewhere among the Firefly chinese sites as being "little sister, unrelated". That makes sense ... he treats her like his little sister and calls her one, too ... only using a more correct term than we have in English.

(I think it was in the pilot "Serenity" when Mal told her not to work "too hard on your crush, xiao mei mei ... the Doctor isn't going to be here that long.")

I love the relationship between Mal and Kaylee. I think it's one of the greatest relationships on the show that many people don't even notice. Don't forget the "I love my Captain" quote from Kaylee and her friendly peck on his cheek, and when he made her feel bad, of course Mal bought that pink frilly thing for her to wear to the ball in "Shindig." He worries over her just like a big brother, and you can tell he loves her in that way, too.

There's definately a big brother/little sister relationship with Mal & Kaylee. Which I think makes them an intersting reflection of Simon and River.

CYBERSNARK

Mal feels for Kaylee exactly as Simon feels for River. I think Mal recognizes that on some level. Possibly Simon does as well, contributing to that tacit "understanding" between them.

And somethin' tells me that if Mal had found out about Early's threat to rape Kaylee, someone would've put a few dozen bullets into his back as he floated away. Likely the high-calibre hull-piercing kind.

I agree w/ the mei mei theme that most here are posting. But I also want to remind folks that , before they had such a close , big brother, little sister relationship, Kaylee was iniitally Besters Prarie Harpee.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Mal thinks the world of Kaylee, but there's nothing he loves more than Serenity, and you probably wouldn't let your daughter or kid sister fix your ship if you could help it...I think he thinks of her as a valued colleague who is still "The Kid" compared to his self-image as "Mean Old Man."
