I've held that feeling about schools myself for a very long time. I always tested in the 99% range on most categories of the yearly Iowa exams growing up and usually got straight A's or at heast the Honor Roll, but in the end the only two classes I felt from grade K-12 that benefited me at all in the real world were Keyboarding and Consumer Ed (Which, probably more than coincidentally, were both only 1/2 year courses in my high school).

All that time wasted..... in another era, I'd be a master tradesman in some craft by now.

I've said for a long time that I didn't know crap by the time I was 20 and most of what I've learned that matters in life came from working on the job and learning from my mistakes when I didn't have my parents to fall back on.

When I think back on all the crap I learned in High School, it's a wonder I can think at all....

Yeah.... took a day and a half off. Woke up this morning to caulk the porch, but it was a high of 39 today, so I took to bagging 32 thirty gallon bags of leaves. I would have finished the other 8 or so bags before sundown, but there was a freak 10 minute blizzard that ruined all motivation to remain outside in this crappy weather.

Oh well....

Assuming the weathermen aren't completely wrong about the next two days like they were today, I should have the porch caulked and painted by saturday night and truly be done with the outdoor work by mid weekend!

No hurry on the dating thing ATM.

I'm the sort that is so messed up that I haven't been able to finish the porch yet that the last two days I haven't been able to get back into the basement to keep doing work I was on such a roll with before I stepped away to finish the outside stuff. I've got a house now though, which is a major thing, and no debt, which is another major thing..... Just need to get the house up to at least livable standards for any future Mrs. 6's out there, and get a job and then I'll focus on that.

I can be one hell of a boyfriend when I want to be, problem is, I'm not much of anything else when that's going on. Too much to do now for that kind of distraction.

Nah.... nothing like that. It's not as if I have a calendar and I'm counting the days until I'm 50 to "end it all".... Just saying that I enjoy the things I enjoy, such as smoking more than my share, and I don't expect to be around by the time I'd be of age to collect SSI benefits that likely won't exist anymore anyways.

Funny thing is I recently found out my Grandpa on my dad's side always said the same thing. He ended up making it until he was 62 though (at least my grandma has been able to benefit slightly from his SSI and from his union pension, even though he died before he could take advantage of any of it).

Thanks about the bro. I'm happy my Dad has him because he's made a lifetime habit about being as helpful to people as he can be as I do with my many different focuses. I just hope that they can get him on the right path before it starts putting a strain on his and my step-mom's relationship.

Haha.... yup. Something about the RWED brings out the worst in a lot of folk, even though there has been some good that has come from conversations there......

I know that I can be downright dark if I hang out there for too long. Fortunately, I have too much to do most of the time these days to spend any meaningful time in there. My advice to most of the frequent posters in RWED today would be to find a much more productive and enjoyable hobby.

I finished painting the porch the other day (Sherwin Williams, of course). It looks SWEET!!! I had absolutely no real outdoor work left to do yesterday when it was a beautiful, mid-November, 62 degrees and sunny day, so I just F-d off all day long and enjoyed the weather. It was kind of nice, actually.

It kind of nagged at me though all of the days last week spent raking leaves and caulking/painting that porch while it was windy and overcast and 30-40 degrees though.

Back in the basement today....

Man... you never really know how dirty your floors are until you take a mop and bleach to them, do you? I knew with all the work that had been done so far in the basement that they weren't clean by any means, but a 3 gallon bucket with 1/3rd gallon of bleach was damn near toxic-dead mold-sludge going down the sink when it was over. (I really need to install a slop-sink in the basement so I don't have to disinfect my kitchen sink after doing work like that in the future)

Me-thinks I'll have to mop it at least two more times, and the rough spots will have to be scrubbed down hard. Anywhere that the old water heater was dragged/sat has some rust in the grout that really needs to be taken care of. But all in all it looks fantastic down there now compared to this morning. Not to mention how great it smells.

So tomorrow I will be finishing primering the studs that haven't been hit yet, taking a wire brush to the cracks and crevasses for a second time, mopping and scrubbing once again and hopefully by Friday I'll have all of the pits between the ceramic tiles and the tracks for the walls filled with concrete and ready to caulk for the weekend.

If all goes according to plan, much of this work is largely overkill since I hope to never have a flood that escapes the crawlspace with the preparations I will be making, but ask all of the peeps Noah didn't invite on his boat about how failing to plan is planning to fail.

My basement will be more watertight than a duck's ass when I'm done, and even better I'll have the pics to prove all the work had been done behind the scenes if I ever plan to sell the house in the future.

Here's hoping I'll have my own washer and dryer installed in the basement late next week! It will be so nice not to have to drive somewhere else to do laundry.

Oh yeah.... this house will pretty much be a home by then, so I can actually spend some serious time looking for a job (for real).

Lots of stuff to do, don't get me wrong, but everything else is largely cosmetic.

Hey brother, you are gonna have to post some finished picks when everything is said and done.
Other than that, I strongly recommend a home theater. You can get an HD projector(Panasonic AE4000 accept no substitute) and quality screen for under $2K. Fucking phenomenal. 12 years ago you would have to pay around $50,000....for a projector that isn't even half as good as the current Panny 4000. Set up a room with a 120" screen, and enjoy your favorite shows/movies in style.
By the way, I don't work for Panasonic, It's just a kick ass projector.

Nice :)

I've got a 51" screen right now, but it's the last gen rear projection Hitatchi. It's a kick ass TV (especially since I don't have to haul it anywhere anymore). You can view it from any angle and the picture is still clear... it doesn't go black if you're not facing it directly like the older tech.

The only problem is it's a monster on the electricity. I only really break that bad boy out when I'm entertaining and use the old 27" Sony Trinitron for normal viewing.

As for the pics.... Already on top of it. Here's a look at what I've done so far.

Saw pics...Did ya get yer shelf put back up? You'll have to post some "done" pics, eventually...I never did take any pics of our basement "before", but I recently took the woman I bought our place from on a tour and when I took her downstairs, she gasped and said "It look soo different, I can't even picture what it was like in here before!" That was satisfying.

I'm of the opinion that any kind of insulation other than foamboard in a basement is a disaster in waiting. Too many things can go wrong...

Oh, I saw an article today about a man who goes to the Ukraine looking for bride and gets scammed into homelessness. So yeah, don't go there...

I'm guessing probably not. If it was anywhere in that mold infested basement I haven't done any actual rehab yet. I've just gotten all of the bad stuff out and I'm working on making it water tight. I want to live through a spring flood season or two and have a new sump pump and (hopefully) one of those Natural Gas backup generators installed before I work on re-finishing it. They cost about 3000 bucks installed for the smallest (8000 Watt) units. Some could argue it's a luxury, but then again "some" haven't ever had to spend a month in a basement removing mold that had crawled up to 6 feet high behind-the-scenes either.

Not much is actually "done" yet, but just greatly improved. I just realized after I saw your post that I have a lot of updated pics that I haven't uploaded there yet. Even though the basement isn't "done" yet, I think you'll find it really cool what I'm doing to mold-proof it as much as possible. I've got a few inventive ideas going on here that I think will also add a lot of value to the house because I'm taking pics of everything as proof of work done before I wrap everything up.

It's such a satisfying thing for me to look at the before pics and what everything looks like now. It especially helps in the morale department when I'm feeling like something is just taking way too long and huge strides aren't being made in a short time. When I was pulling out 5 to 8 huge trash bags of moldy crap a day it was easy to see how much work was getting done and give myself a big pat on the back at the end of the day, but when it came to scrubbing studs with bleach/vinegar/peroxide, removing screws and staples from the studs, bleaching the removed trim that I'm going to try to re-use, and just general cleaning up of the aftermath, it could feel like I was working forever and nothing was getting done.

Pics are great, but I only wish somebody had invented a smell-o-camera so I could actually relive the smell of the house when I first moved in. I'll just have to be happy that I'm not the only one who was here before the work was done and that others remember how it smelled of a thousand kitty cats crapping and now the basement has a pleasant, faint, primer/bleach odor to it and there is absolutely no smell on the upper floors at all.

Hehe.... Still on that Russian Bride thing, huh?

Seriously, what does a guy expect when he marries a foreign woman he doesn't even know, no pre-nup, and she just happens to look like a 5k/hr hooker our good Senators spend our tax dollars on?

There can sometimes be a fine line between fantasy and reality, but if some poor fool breaches that barrier and invites a woman who's upkeep costs just to look as hot as those photos he saw of her online cost 500 bucks a day, he better have a huge bankroll and an outstanding job. Not to mention a near inhuman will to not be suckered into homelessness in that one weak moment when the temptation gets greater everyday as he really starts falling in love with her.

All of this work is a vacation to folk like me. Like the seven dwarves, I just whistle while I work and listen to my mp3s. Sometimes some jobs grind on me, but for the most part I love this stuff. It's the idea that the party is nearly over and that I'm going to have to start looking for a job working for somebody else that bothers me.

Hey Wishimay!

I added the pics to the Porch Project to the photostream. There are three new sets to check out.

1. Post scrub, pre-fix/primer
2. Primered and fixed
3. Finished - caulked and painted

It looks great!

Don't mind the leaves everywhere in the pics. I've since gotten to them...... a huge pain in the ass itself, with four large maples and the fact that my lawn seems to be a magnet for all of the neighbors leaves too.

I've got a lot more pics of the basement now that all the studs/tracks are primered and I've begun some really cool work to really make the skeleton water tight. I'll have to get those organized so I can upload them soon.

I got, like, the ultimate compliment today! A couple of teen girls were walking down the street and said hi to me while I was doing some yard work. They said that they loved my house.

I haven't felt that "cool" since I was riding around in my old man's brand new Dodge Daytona as a kid and some kid yelled out "cool car!!!!" as we passed.

They're right, it looks pretty cool...Amazing how much a coat of paint and changing out some boards can do for a place.

Yes, I know you were kiddin' about the russian bride thing, was just on the subject...

Do you have any other projects in the house you are going to do eventually, changing out fixtures and such?(In the first set of pics there was a wire shelving in several) I know you said you were having problems with a shower leaking? Did you say that got fixed?

We finally moved in the cast iron tub I refinished($45 at a flea market, $40 for 2 refinishing kits which work great , 'cause I left it in the rain for a week and it was perfectly fine

) , and put it next to the pedistal sink I bought($20 unused ata yard sale,fixture $15 at same flea market, also unused) and introduced them to each other. They are such a pretty couple

Now...just need some plumbing......and some walls. There is already lines run to the area, so it's not as complicated as it sounds, hopefully. Don't hold yer breath for updates, it'll be A WHILE, heh...

I have a billion projects I'll eventually be getting to. I'm just taking care of the preventative stuff mostly right now before the winter kicks in. I do believe that, minus the gutters, I have the entire outside of the house and garage sealed tight now. My main focus now is making the basement watertight even though I don't plan on actual basement rehab until at least the end of next summer, if not a year from then.

Once I get all that done, I can focus on one project at a time and take a little more time to show pics and explain exactly what I'm doing. The entire 2nd floor (2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a hallway) are my next main focus.

The secondary bedroom is a HUGE eyesore. Every wall is a different primary color.... even in the closet. If life were simple, I'd have already at least primered the walls and gotten them prepped for painting. Unfortunately, the electric in that room is all out of wack. One of the outlets will actually fry anything you put into it. It is an outlet that was extended from an existing outlet on the adjacent wall on the outside of the drywall (hard to explain without showing pics).... Plus, the light switch for the overhead fixture in the room is across the hall from the room. That crap ain't going to fly with me. I very well may have to rip out a wall and some of the ceiling to fix the problems before I start remodeling the room. Even worse, I may very well have to rip out some of the walls in the hallway to fix the electricity since this ain't Cook County and Romax wasn't a code problem back in the late 50's here when the house was built. Fingers crossed they actually used conduit and bent the corners instead of using elbows or junction boxes.

Bah... if I have to take out the walls, no big deal really. It's pretty cheap to fix them and repaint them. I kill two birds doing it, since I'll make sure the electric is kosher, and I'll alleviate any subconscious worries I have that mold got upstairs. It doesn't smell at all in the house anymore..... but I'm such a mold-a-phobe now that tearing down those walls would probably be good therapy for me.

I didn't fix the leaky shower yet. I'll probably have to rehab the upstairs bathroom to do it. I think the leak is coming from one of the 2 elbows from the top of the shower head, but the creators were silicone crazy and the shower is lined with those fiberglass wall boards all the way up to the ceiling. I'd have to rip out a lot just to fix that. I'd like to replace that cheap fiberglass wallboard with some real kick-ass ceramic tiles someday, but the funds and time just won't allow for that now. So... in the meantime it's just going to be a 5 gallon bucket catching the overflow in my 2nd bathroom in the basement.

I've finished laying concrete between the tile edges and the tracks for all the walls in 2/3rds of the basement today. I wanted to do this to make sure that if there was even a flood of 1" in the basement that it would have nowhere to pool. When it's dry I just need to sand it and then caulk it to the primered tracks. It will be great when it's all done, but it seriously takes forever to do. Between mixing concrete, laying it down, smoothing it out and then cleaning up the excess from the ceramic tiles, I'm making about 7 to 8 linear feet of progress every 45 minutes.

This is probably one of many OVERKILL things I will be doing to the basement in the future, but nobody could really understand my mindset unless they've seen what I've seen. I really think that when it comes time to sell the house down the road that all of the pics I have of these little extras will really be selling points too.

Cast iron tubs are The SHIT! I envy you so much right now! I didn't even know you could refinish them on the fly by yourself. What a bargain at that price. I will definatiley be looking to do that in my upstairs bathroom when the time comes.

Good luck getting it all hooked up right. I know about time though.... I'm probably looking at getting an Aldi job soon. They pay hella-fine and the health benefits are great. I'm just hoping that they recognize that I'm a beast of a man and I can do all the heavy lifting while somebody else works the register. I haven't done a cash register since I was 16 and I'd rather be the behind the scenes guy. If the pipefitters union thing doesn't work out for me, I'm sure I can live with 12 bucks an hour stocking shelves until I get promoted to assistant store manager in a few years :)

Any way I was thinking today about how far I'll go to make sure things don't come back to haunt me, heh. Primary colors EVERYWHERE?? Yeah that would come back to haunt me...

Tips for re-finishing a cast iron tub...(you could call re-bath but I never could get someone to give me a ballpark, they say they have to come to your house first...and I'm sure a high pressure sale is involved somewhere)$$$!

First of all, selection is key. If you live near a building salvage there may be a few to choose from. They also make resin ones now, but $$$!

Find one that has as few chips as possible(I just had one). They do sell chip kits. Mix and Apply VERY quickly, it dries like lightning!!(then sand it smooth) Make sure the drain and faucet holes are sound and round, there may be SOME rust, but not all the way through. Buy a couple tub refinish kits and a couple SMALL cheap rollers and trays, as the paint dries hard, and you will probably want to layer. Hand sand all the surface to be painted, and clean thoroughly with baking soda and vinegar, then bleach. Believe it or not, sliced onion will take off most rust staining... PAINT OUTSIDE, the kit contains xylitol. Also, if you have an old truck with rust spots you don't want getting worse, you can use tub paint-it won't come off in the rain or when you wash it, like those touch ups from the auto store...I'd like to try painting words or a design on one with it, I think it would work...

Also, if you get one that has feet, they are not usually used for support, so get a couple smooth faced concrete blocks and paint them the same color.

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but the reward of restoring one of these things is worth it...

Heh... yup. I call it "The Clown Room". I have some beautiful Civil War prints hung up in there that my uncle gave me when he moved into a condo Downtown and no longer had room for them. It's kind of my office/workout room right now until I rehab the basement completely and move stuff down there. The prints are framed and huge so they cover a lot and make the room at least bearable to sit in, but I wonder if Grant and Lee are turning in their graves now.

Speaking of making sure things don't come back to haunt me, that's 100% of my work in the basement right now. So completely overkill I'm sure, especially if I do right and never have a flood again, but man..... it's depressing work. Everything I'm doing now will end up being covered and nobody will ever see it. It takes ages to do, and at the end of the day the visual impact is so lacking that it all just seems to drag on forever.

Thankfully, I finally finished laying the concrete today! Tomorrow I'm going to sand it all down with a grade and vaccum it all up and begin caulking the rooms that I started first. Then I have about 6 more cans of Great Stuff at least to spray all over like silly string and then I can finally put the final coat of mold/mildew proof paint on the studs and tracks.

Will I be able to wash and dry my clothes at my own house next week????????? Here's hoping!

Great tips on the tub. I'm sure that every single step of installing a cast-iron tub will be a huge pain in the ass, but well worth it in my book. Here's hoping I can find a decent one. I'd LOVE one with feet. They really don't support the weight though?

My biggest regret that I didn't get into one of the houses that I was looking at before this one was the beautiful tub in the upstairs bathroom that had feet with dragon-like paws/claws at the bottom. Seemed so retro-goth. It would be cool to find something like that in the future and restore it.

Boy, sanding concrete is impossible when you only have fine grain sandpaper (probably would be with the most coarse stuff too). The heavy duty steel wool brush I tried using was basically torn to shreds after about 8 feet of sanding. Whoops!!!!!

Screwdrivers, however, have multiple uses :)

I would have used a chisel, but I didn't want to gouge the ceramic tiles, so I had to be pretty careful. I graded the concrete so water would stay away from the tracks/studs and then I sanded the corners and tracks down so they are smooth, concrete free, and ready for caulk. Yay!

I also bit the bullet and primered all of the really hard to reach places all in one shot. There are only two trouble spots that I noticed I'll still have to bleach because I missed a little bit of mold.

Did a second bleach treatment on the tiles and bare floor and was amazed at how dirty the water was still. I'm going to keep doing that every few days until the damn bucket has sparkly clear bleach/water when I'm done!

Other than that, just caulking, Great Stuff-ing, and painting all the tracks and studs with the mold/mildew proof paint and the basement is DONE!

Well... at least until I have the money for a generator, new sump pump and all the material I'll need to actually remodel down there.....

Hi 6string.

Reading your posts made me a little nostolgic for my remodeling dayz here.

Got this place in 93 and did alot uv work to increase the value to ride the refy wave.

The coolest thing I did wuz add a roof deck. also did alot uv electric upgradez, redid the bathroom, bilt a cement & cinderblock work shed that mainly servez az a house for the air compressor and generator.

Something simple to do that payz off big iz to insulate your bath tub. I put sum 2 inch foam panelz and hozed Great Stuff in the gaps. Works fantastic if you like to take long hot baths.

I don't know what I'll do with myself when I "finish" the work. I always somewhat enjoyed rehabbing work with my friend's dad, but it's nothing like the awesome feeling of working on your own place.

Heh... I think the refy wave days are long gone. I know the work I've done so far at the bargain basement price I got the place for has added a substantial amount compared to what I spent on it if I were to put it on the market now, but I fear it won't be too long before I hit the sweet spot and then suffer from the law of diminishing returns. This ain't 2002....

I think in the end I could only honestly sell this place for 220% of what I paid for it if it were completely updated and modernized, which doesn't sound too shabby.... but that would include some major things like completely ripping down the vinyl siding and putting up some more expensive material that isn't "garage-worthy" like, in my opinion, vinyl is.

A roof deck sounds awesome :) Do you mean you added some sliding patio doors to your bedroom and had a deck overlooking the backyard from it? I'd LOVE that!

Fortunately, I have a built in storage shed at the tail end of the enclosed porch. It's pretty cool to have your very own U-Haul storage locker attached to the house. The gumment must have thought it was cool too because they tax me about 80 bucks a year for it as a line item in my taxes.

I can't think of the last time I've ever even taken a bath. I'm pretty low maintenance that way. Gimmie' a hot shower and I'm all smiles. I can tell you that after I got the hot water installed after 3 weeks of doing mold remediation in 95 degree weather and taking ice cold showers afterwards that I think my first hot shower was about an hour long!

Good tip though for the future. I'm not looking to be a bachelor the rest of my life. I can't imagine a woman that doesn't enjoy a nice hot bath.

My biggest regret about this place I guess would be the layout when bathrooms are concerned. I'd love to have one of those huge walk in bathrooms with a jaccuzi in them and two sinks and a lot of room to move about, but that would entail a lot of construction work and sacraficing the sizes of the otherwise pretty large rooms surrounding them.

Decisions.... decisions....

BTW..... speaking of great stuff, it really is great stuff... but... if you're going to completely disregard the instructions like most men inherantly do and decide that wearing gloves while using it is a hassle you don't need to put up with, you better have a shut off switch for instinctual desires like diving in with your bare hand to re-fit stuff that fell over where you didn't want it to fall. I swear to god that it kills at least the first layer of skin on contact, and it also seals in any dirt you had on your hand before working with it. I had to ensure my parents that my hands were clean and washed about 8 times before I came over for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday even though it looked like I hadn't washed them in a year and necrosis had set in.

Nothing a little sandpaper the next day can't take care of, but I'd rather not have to buff my hands out with 200grit sandpaper in the future anytime soon.

It's nearly 2 days after the fact and the blackness on my thumb and forefinger from putting out a cigarette (because I'm one of those curtious smokers that dont' litter) is still encased in my hand as if in a plastic covering that comic book geeks would be envious of.

Don't F-ing use Great Stuff if you're not using gloves and you are naturally impulsive. It should say that shit on the can lol..

It's almost gone though now, 2 days later. I sanded most of it off, along with my skin.

My bigger wound is when I was cutting off a tip to a Dap caulk and I sliced about a quarter of my left index finger knuckle off.

Holy Shit!

It seriously didn't start bleeding for about 5 minutes, but once it started it wouldn't quit.

Good thing I'm not "THAT cheap" or after a half hour of working on a spot and seeing blood all over my tiles I would have just cauterized the wound.

It wasn't until I went to prepare the 2nd tube of caulk that I saw the flesh-wound on my utility knife.

Seriously....

I'll bet there are objects sitting in the Smithsonian that are less worthy than the 1/3 of my knuckle that I'm saving :)

I learned the hard way to wear glovez wile using Great stuff about 25 yirz ago. But occasionally, I get the notion that I can be careful enuf and end up with a semi temporary rorsach tat. Like super glue, Great Stuff haz a demon in it that will take any opportunity to do evil.

My roof deck iz at the top uv the house, 25 feet up. The master bedroom haz access with a fold out ladder thru a hatch. Its 10 x 15 ft with plastic lumber decking.

My projects are mostly mechanical devicez, so remodeling wuz a change uv pace for me.

Last week i did an experiment for a non-trust vehicle drive concept. Negative rezult, but it wuz fun making the device. Now I'm nearly dun with 2 copiez uv an angle trisector visual demo device a guy in Australia thought up. Its to help us find a way to figure out an actual given angle trisection method, wich haz been declared impossible.

I got gloves I used for the mold remediation, but they're super heavy and my hands sweat so bad in them that they're all pruned up when I'm done using them. I'll have to get some of those thin latex gloves for Great Stuff next time.

Hehe... Great Stuff really is evil stuff if you don't respect it. I'd used 7 or 8 cans of it previously without any gloves. It also says to wear eye protection. I still think that eyewear is overkill, but I could only imagine what it would do to your eyes. I'm betting complete blind spots for life wherever it touched.

Do you have pics of your roof deck? I'm having a hard time imagining it, but it sounds killer. I'd love to see it.

When you start talking mechanical stuff I'm all dumb... I managed to figure out my furnace with a few days research, and I know how to pump gas, change a tire and change the oil on my car, but that's about the extent of my mechanical understanding.

Really inventive and unique. I think your skilz are a bit beyond mine there. That looks like it took a ton of work to do, changing the shape of the house and all. I like the new colors you added to the house after the fact too.

I was thinking about maybe putting a porch out my master bedroom and adding sliding patio doors after we were talking about it last night, but then I looked at the whole situation this morning and remembered how I can't wait until I can afford a huge privacy fence to block out the view of my neighbors' yards behind me. As cool as it would be during the summer to sit out there at night and have a beer, until I get new neighbors, there's really no view I'd want to see from up high.

Maybe the village will allow me to put up a 12' privacy fence in the back yard...... no...... probably not....

EDITED TO ADD:

Oh yeah.... found more hidden mold in the basement today.... bummer. The drywall behind the stairway going downstairs that's behind the large molding is just teeming with it. I don't know what made me look back there, but I'm glad I did. I was hoping that it wouldn't have any room to breathe or grow back there, but sure enough...... I think I'll have to take the drywall out all the way up to the top of the molding and then brace it all with some strategically cut 2x4's before I repaint anything. That's a lot of work I didn't want to have to do, but I'm glad I found it now and not after I refinished anything.

Oh, and wouldn't cha know it? As I was finally taking the parts to the fiberglass shower out of the basement this morning so I didn't have to keep moving them around while I was working and risk breaking them, I broke one of the sliding doors into about 3000 pieces. I hope I can replace a single door and that I don't have to replace the entire shower unit.

It looks great. I hope your neighbors keep up their yards and garages a bit more than a few of mine do. It's not exactly lakefront property with a view beyond my property line.

Uggg... the shower door. I've been hemorrhaging money since I bought the house 3 1/2 months ago, but I expected as much. Not cool when I go and sabotage myself like that though. I've managed to track down the manufacturer/vendor and they're based in Canada. I don't have a firm price yet, but I think I'm looking at about 200 bucks with shipping to get the replacement door.

At that price for such a small part of the shower, I have a decision to make. Maybe I should just add some square footage to the bathroom and install a large tub with jets and put some nice tiles everywhere instead. In the end, that would cost me a lot more than 200 bucks, but the shower itself doesn't look brand new as it is. Since it was "free" before, I was just going to put it back, but I may consider my options a bit more heavily now. Maybe fate did me a favor here?

I truly believe the mold is gone now. I had to gut another 2 bags worth of it today and do another bleach treatment. I should have known better. That's what you get for cutting corners. It was really bad there behind the scenes. I'm just glad I broke down and just tore it all out instead of trying to seal it in. It's all part of the stairs though, so replacing all of that is going to be a monster project compared to the rest of the stuff I've already remediated.

I've removed all of the polysheeting, so it shouldn't be but a week before the bleach smell is gone and I'm hoping there is zero foul odor when that happens.

I've never liked those glass door slide-y things. They block air flow, and always look like crap, even after you scrub them.
I hada similar prob, a while back. I had one of those nice heavy old mirrors I took down so I could paint behind it on the floor with a painting and a glass coffee table top...The next day I hada really heavy trip to the dump

The good news is I found a new mirror at the GW that is much prettier the next week, so....

I'm really thinking that when I have a job and some decent cash flow again that I'm just going to take the old thing out completely and put an oversized tub with jets down there. There's no way I could make the bathroom upstairs big enough to do that, but there is some room I could sacrifice in the basement to expand the bathroom and get a kick ass tub in there.

If the future Mrs 6 wants to pick out shower curtians, she can do it in the "master bathroom".

Most of the closet spaces here already have lights and switches, but those aren't a bad idea for the one I have that doesn't, may hafta.

As for ordering online, I am somewhat of a dinosaur in that respects, I have only ordered maybe 3 things online, and only when it was a massive savings to do so. I believe in trying to keep it local, and actually getting out and going for a walk once in a while...and I leave my internets at home when I do it, hah.

Hey Wishimay,

The only "closet" in my house that has a switch has studs for walls in the stripped basement. The upstairs closets have nothing. The pantry next to the kitchen (which currently serves as my indoor tool shed) has nothing. The finished Anne Frank crawlspace (where I house my smoking room/mancave/drinking and emailing and posting on FFF.net) has nothing between rooms.

4 of these bad boys are going to come in VERY handy.

I'm all about supporting local business, but when the stuff I was going to buy was outrageously priced at Best Buy or WalMart compared to online, I choose online. I can't think of a ma' and pop store I'm screwing when I order 4 free LCD lights.

Just something to ponder. 40 free bucks and free shipping is always good in my book.

Hehe... about the interesting parafanila sealed in my garage. It's been over 6 months now since I've partaken in that "hobby" and only recently have i not imagined what it would feel like on a daily basis to do it again. I had to throw that out and bury it in a mold filled garbage can so I wouldn't smoke what looked to be a half-bowl of possibly ancient "stuff".

I wonder what else I would dig up if I took all the walls down....

These days I find that energy is much better spent on things I can do for myself in real life rather than try to convince people who will never change their mind that they're wrong.

Of all the years I spent there, meeting Frem and the aftermath of a conversation we had were the only pluses of any of my time spent there. If you ask the kid who benefited from that though, I'm sure he'd say it was all worth it. I'm inclined to agree.

I just don't want to spend another 3 years there hoping something else good will come of all of that otherwise wasted time.

I am this week doing something I said I'd never do again- wallpapering. Somebody wrecked a couple walls in the bathroom, and I'm putting textured paper(looks like knock-down) up and then painting, with new shiny trim (as there was 3 different kinds). We already replaced the toidy, the sink, cabinet and fixtures. All told, an entire remodel (a la auctions!) about $400. Going to another this weekend 'cause I HAVE to have a riding mower. Pushing hurts too much... Cross yer fingers I get a good one cheap!

Well... I'll let you know for sure about the deal I got when I get them. Most people seemed to love the lights, but there were some disproportionate negative reviews in there too. There always are though, right? Some people are never satisfied.

Crap... It's actually been 8 months! I think except for a brief 3 month stint off of it when I was looking for a job back in 2004 I could count on my hands and toes the number of days I went without my sweet MJ.

I'd say it's amazing how much physical work you can get done when you're not on it. I won't say that all work can't be done on it though. I had a very large, unpaid, project that required sitting at a computer for hours on end for years that never would have been completed had I not been able to partake in my favorite hobby. To somebody like me with undiagnosed OCD, that beautiful herb is like a tuning fork that can make you shut everything else out and make some really great things happen.

I'm actually an advocate of the stuff, ESPECIALLY with all of the man-made anti-psychotics, psychotropics and hypnotics the government sanctioned drug dealers (aka pharmacists) dole out to the masses (even our children

), but I don't advocate it for everybody and certainly not in every situation.

Nobody, but your D.A.R.E. Cops speaking to 3rd graders (do they still have those?) could argue that it's much less dangerous for your own health than cigarettes. From personal experience in my own life, I'd MUCH rather be behind the wheel of a pothead than an alcoholic when they're indulging. The effects are different for everyone though. But couldn't you say the same of nearly any drug you can buy at the pharmacy?

I have an aunt and a very good friend who, literally, can't even take a shower without smoking a bowl beforehand. They both work great jobs and nobody would ever know they did it because they're cognizant of society's perception of the act, they actively cover the smell and they have a steady supply of Visene. I could never go to work high myself (I did it once on the job when I was offered it by my boss doing construction...... 6SJ + Herb + Job = Bad things). I'm the type of person who gets really cerebral on it and would rather just stay at home and would largely be useless in any social capacity.

To each his own. My feeling is, as long as we as society feel it okay for people to smoke cigarettes and drink (even if we now feel we can make them only do it in their own homes), I feel that weed should be on the OK-to-do-list too. The only problem is, you can't test for driving on it like alcohol. It would be no fair if you were driving and got pulled over and they gave you a pot-exam and you failed it because you smoked two weeks ago.

It's ridiculous.... I can go for a drug test on a Monday after shooting heroin or snorting an 8-ball on Friday night and get the job. I smoke a doober 4 weeks prior though, and it's a done deal.

Bah..... whatever..... I'm done with it, at least for now. At least till I get a good job. Hopefully I can keep saying no when that time comes. I've done really well so far.

Got my washer and dryer installed tonight!!!!!!

I may have mentioned a LONG time ago in this thread I bought them on Craigslist about 2-3 months ago. 300 bucks plus 30 delivery (a 28 mile round trip for them) for a Stainless Steel Designer Series Amana set. I'm so happy they work exactly as he said they would. He, his wife and his son came for the ride after we loaded them up and they just seemed honest as hell. I gave the dad a 50 dollar tip when it was done and he called his son over and gave it all to him. He also saw my garage and told me from one homeowner to another he'd recommend covering the windows to my garage and they've had an old green bed sheet covering them ever since the next day.

Tomorrow I'm running some cleaning agents through the wash a couple of times and I'm going to hopefully try it out by Sunday (I'm getting down to the point where I either wash clothes or buy new socks

)

At that point, I'm really looking forward to making the call to him that I've been wanting to make for so long....

Yep..... I'm about one week away from wrapping up the basement as mold-free and water tight.

Got everything a homeowner could want and more at this point. Seems surreal that a year and two weeks ago my Mom and stepDad were moving me from Wisconson back home from my shitty little two bedroom apartment. I can't believe a year has flown by like that, but when I look back at all that has been done, I can only wish I was that active the 10 years prior and wonder what things would be like today.

You don't need an expensive, high maintenance rider mower silly. Didn't you read my previous posts?

I've got a Troy-Bilt self propelled mower/mulcher that has a Briggs and Stratton engine in it. That thing will clean out your yard and you wouldn't even know that you didn't bag it. My lawn is HUGE and neighbors tell me they can't believe I don't use a rider. Sure, it takes me about 75 minutes to mow the lawn, but I'm just listening to my mp3 player in my own little world and time flies.

To the untrained eye, everyone else thinks I'm pushing the damned thing, but it really does about 95% of the work itself. The 5% of the "work" I have to do with it is the 5% or more of the areas your oversized thug of a rider can't reach and you'd have to use a regular push mower anyways. Seriously, this thing kicks ass, vaporizes grass, and you can dance in circles with it.

It's one of the most impressive machines I've ever owned.

Darlin, walkin IS the problem. We have a self propelled. Can't. Heat. Walking, heat, very bad. Lights flashing, dizzy, blisters, rashes, sneezing, OUCH!( I have problems

BUT WE WERE VICTORIOUS... Got an unused Ranch King fer $200(with snow plow attachment). Everybody was saying what a good deal it was. The only real problem is no key, but a nice ol' boy said our local yokel shop should have it, he has the same model. Got enough other stuff I needed to fill a truck for $30. (fans for basement, toys, desk for kiddo, new comforter in bag for $5, lamp for $1, folding table for $2)
Met nice people, hada good day out

I hope one day I get to legally try yer herbs, I think they WOULD help some of my problems. In the meantime, nobody gets to raise my kid but me. Can't go being a hypocrite to her just yet...

I figured you and the hubby to be a bit older than me, but not relics. :)

If that's the case, and I'm not your doctor so I can't be sued, but I'd recommend eating a lot less salt and at the very least mowing your lawn for exercise every week, even in the dead of winter.

You know I have your best intentions in mind. If you didn't post here regularly, nobody would.

If you're really on your way out, which I don't believe for a second, you need to put pot on your bucket list. The only two things I put above it for instant amazing self gratification is a few lines of coke or whatever0 money it takes for unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl who is of age for a few hours.

If that was the case, I'd love to meet up with the both of you and hubby and bring some bad ass stuff and bake them into some really tasty brownies. In all of my experiences with it, the best high I ever had was about 4 years on a camping trip when I ate copious amnounts of happy brownies.

No paranoia there. Just the best herbal high of my life surrounded by mine and my brother's friends around a campfire.

I even played "Stairway" for them on my ancient acoustic guitar that night :)

Actually, I'm younger than you. I think. Age is no indicator of health. Children get cancer and worse and young people get old people diseases(I'm not terminal, but...).
I'm onea the latter. Having a rough evening, if you wanna know(salt has nothing to do with it). Trying to live as normal a life as can be until I can't anymore(then I shall gladly hedonist myself, royally, I may take up yer offer some day

). Trying like hell to Gorilla tape myself together everyday, anyway.

Never have guessed it, huh? Actually, that's one of the reasons I like this place, I'm not the only one getting by, and as long as I can come here and crack a few jokes and get into a few arguments and see others I know still keepin' on, it's all good, hon...
