At my local library, I'm organizing a Firefly night the Friday/Saturday before the movie comes out and we're gonna watch some Firefly episodes. Can you all recommend the Top 4/5 that you MUST watch when having a nice little Shindig such as this?

If there are people who have never seen it before you owe it to them to show the first 5 in the correct order - then they'll all go out and buy the DVD set ;)

I agree with showing the first 5 in order. They'll be hooked after the 1st one and want to follow the storyline.
If you're insistant on showing them out of order then I would suggest

Out of Gas

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I would recommend:

Serenity
Bushwacked
Our Mrs. Reynolds
Jaynestown
Ariel

Those are not the ones I consider to be the five best, but rather ones that give a broad picture of what Firefly is all about and also feature good scenes with all of the cast. I know most people would list Out of Gas as one of the ones to show, but if you do it should be the last one. New viewers really need to get to know all the characters in order for that one to be most effective.

What I would want to show people ...

1 Serenity - The Pilot
Why: Besides being the best introduction, it has the best climax resolution sequence, from Patience to Dobson to the Reavers. And it has horses.

2. The Train Job
Why: The bar fight, Serenity swooping over the train, and just one word: "DARN!"

3. Safe
Why: River dancing during the shootout. More of what River is and what Book is. And of course, "Big Damn Heros, sir." But maybe more so for the tag line and all that it says: "Why'd you come back?" "You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this?"

4. Out of Gas
Why: Quite simply one of the best constructed pieces of story telling you're going to see.

5. Objects in Space
Why: River walk, Jubal Early, and that beautiful scene of River floating down at the end. The whole thing is just so chilling and creepifying.

If there was more time, I'd want to fit in one or both of these:

Our Mrs. Reynolds
Why: It has all the elements - horses and wagons, helping out settlers, introduction of Vera, lots of shots of all areas of Serenity, and some of the very best explicatives like "Da-shiong bao-jah-shing duh la-doo-tze!" (The explosive diarrhea of an elephant) and "Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh!" (Holy Mother of God and all her wacky nephews). Not to mention, "Whoa. Good myth."

Jaynestown
Why: Besides the whole crappy-planet-where-Jayne's-a-hero thing, Inara gets to get some work (and save the day), and it has "Too much hair!"

Yeah, and if wishes were horses we'd all be eatin' steak.

Reconsideration. For a short program, i think I agree with ECGORDON that Out of Gas should be the ender. And while I really, really, really like Objects in Space, it has so many back references like to War Stories and Ariel, that it loses some of its impact without having seen those. So I would make my modified list:

Serenity
The Train Job
Safe
Our Mrs. Reynolds
Out of Gas

Yeah, and if wishes were horses we'd all be eatin' steak.

Top four, can't decide the order:

Ariel
Out of Gas
War Stories, not War Games, oops
Objects in Space

"But ... not boring, like she made it sound." Wash, in ARIEL
"None of it means a damn thing." Mal, in OBJECTS IN SPACE

If you want to show them the best:

Serenity
Ariel
Out of Gas
War Stories
Objects in Space

This somewhat slights the western elements. You might want to substitute Jaynestown or Our Mrs. Reynolds for War Stories or OiS if that concerns you.

Serenity and Objects in Space are a must -- its just choosing the best of what's in between them that the problem would be.

I'd go with Safe, Out of Gas (original of me, eh? ;)) and, The Message.

WHISPERING

My top 4 would be,
Serenity
Safe
Ariel
Objects In Space

Though it would be better to just show the first 4 or 5 episodes, coz if they like Firefly, the others contain spoilers. So it wouldnt be as fun for them to watch all of them later. And if they dont like it, it doesnt really matter what episodes you show them. It would be like giving jewels to pigs :p

The order that worked for my first conversion shindig was:

Serenity
Out of Gas
Our Mrs Reynolds
Trash

Serenity followed by Out of Gas works well because Out Of Gas stands alone without having seen the other eps, plus OOG is the best ep and who can fail to be converted by it?. Our Mrs Reynolds is good for the best dialogue and some light relief after the two serious eps. I then followed it with Trash (obviously OMR had to come first) because I was watching with a group of girls who were all likely to find the opening and closing scenes very interesting. It would have been better to see Ariel before Trash though I think.

We then watched Ariel then Jaynestown.

For the next shindig I was thinking:

War Stories (possibly safe before hand) so that later we can watch OIS
and Heart of Gold so that we can watch OIS.
