Hey all just a quickie question.

I was just wondering how people would take to Firefly if it were to come back, but say the continuation meant there would be no scope for the crew to be aboard Serenity any longer.

Instead they're just on some planet undertaking odd jobs and generally ending up in bad situations...

Would you all be partial to such things?

I can't really picture it. Seems like the scope would be significantly reduced. One static setting just doesn't fit the show in my mind.

If they were going to do that I would rather have them follow totally new characters just set in the same verse.

Well BookOnboardSystemComputer... I didn't see it working before but I do now!! That was funny!

Ok so it's not Firefly as we know it, but it has some pretty on target characterisations.

Actually, I could see it working. Assuming we're post movie crew, Inara's the only one who really needs a ship to keep working. But maybe the right planet with the right use for her companion skills could work out.

Safe explored the possibility of Simon working a doctor clinic in a poor Rim town and them sheltering him and River from the Alliance. A migratory doctor might not be bad either.

And Kaylee has always wanted to start up her OWN mechanics shop anyway, and she doesn't need to be on a ship to do so.

Zoe, Mal, and Jayne's storylines where they go on heists and robberies and smuggling don't really need a ship to be true to form. They could also theoretically take part in cattle runs and rustling and the old fights between free range versus the land barons.

If it's a reboot with Wash and Book still alive, Book functions fine planet side, we just get to see a few more abbey scenes and preaching to villagers. Wash can still be useful getting Zoe, Jayne, and Mal team out of any binds and transporting their illicit gains to market elsewhere.

It would end up by its nature being far more Western than Sci-Fi, though, unless there just happened to be a Blue Sun facility on world as well.

Hey Zeek.

Yeah. SERENITY is such a big part of the show, it would be difficult to envisage. But I must confess to having imaginings (had the show continued for Seven seasons) where at least one season the crew might not have been aboard Serenity.

Just so as to contrive a nifty story where they win her back.

Hey Byte

What if they were to commandeer a different ship?

How would that sit with you?

Some potential there. It could be a speedy one to two person thing for Wash, the RPG has one like that in-verse.

Or it could be more of an "alleged boat" that's in even worse condition than Serenity.

I read a story once, I think it was by someone named Jiolee, where someone stole Serenity to put in a museum and left them a run down flying brick as compensation. They then have to try to track down the guy in it, land it without dying, and spend the rest of the story on a planet suffering under a heat wave with no climate control trying to figure out how to get Serenity back and get revenge on the guy.

Imagine Mal's reaction, and his likely mood for the whole story, played for laughs.

I'll find you a link later, because it's really worth a read.

It doesn't have to be that ship (I do like that one though, reminds me of an old pickup I had), it's more of a story telling device. The ship is where the more interesting character studies are explored and acted out, the interaction and conflict between the crew members - different folks pretty much forced to find a way to get along with each other in potentially lethal circumstances. It reminds me of some of the jobs I've found myself working but I got to go home every day. I think watching those dynamics is universally appealing. Take that enclosed space away and they are not forced to deal with each others differences and they end up having shallower relationships. Take away the ship and you don't have the shuttles return in Out of Gas. Also, without the ship you could argue you don't even need the science fiction, just make it a western. I'm partial to the science fiction parts more than the western ones though.

Sounds awesome to me. I like that kind of thing. Though I'm liking the idea that the ship they commandeer is actually way better than Serenity and far more practical (y'know better bunks, better water and air filtration etc) but Mal stubbornly continues to search for Serenity and steals her back.

Ooh. What if the only way they can get a boat to go after the Serenity thieves is they have to team up with local law enforcement? They try to get the Tams somewhere safe first, but then of course it ends up being a scheme to take the Tams into custody. The crew uses their ingenuity to break out, trick the alliance into the holding cells, hijack the patrol boat, save Simon and River, and recover Serenity.

Hey Pizmo.

That's true about taking away the sci-fi element, but there's nothing to say they don't end up on some fancy hi-tech planet. There could still be craft. Like hovercrafts or some such...

Further more maybe this well (alliance) controlled planet only has alliance ships leaving the planet. Therefore our Crew have to device a cunning plan whereby they 'steal'/'hijack' an alliance ship in order to escape said planet... There's a season's worth in there with enough thought. Could be pretty tense too. Involves the crew spending time infiltrating the alliance led planet for the sole purpose of hijacking a ship... Hmmm.

Excellent Byte. Excuse my post above I wrote it before your one came in. But I think we share the same thoughts here. That being that there's plenty of intrigue in the idea of them trying to find their way back into space on whatever ship they can commandeer.

(Again sorry for hitting similar points as you)

I like your ideas - in a way Serenity is still in the show :) And it certainly doesn't have to be all the time, change is good especially over the life of a show that runs for 7, er, 8 seasons. Losing Serenity would make for great motivation (better than Reavers imho). And it would make the vision of Serenity even more sentimental (if that's not too schmaltzy) once they get her back. Mal seeing her as a youngin' and then as a hardened captain...

Book On Board's Serenity Ranch bit made me laugh, nicely done a chara.

The only way it would be fun to watch planet side is if we use Byte's ideas. And I like the element of them trying to get Serenity back too. Either version Byte put forth would be good. Byte should write it after she finishes Eidelon. It can be its own story, not related to her current one.

Firefly without Serenity? That's like Doctor Who without a TARDIS!

I can see it, temporarily, and the scenarios outlined by Bytemite and Somnabulist have appeal, because they involve the search for Serenity and recovery of Serenity--a grand adventure. But scrapping Serenity entirely? Nah. Serenity has two VERY important functions:

*Gets characters to new places and situations. Otherwise we'd have to wait for adventures to come to them. Sure, it can be done, but it somewhat limits the scope. With the ship, the sky's the limit. ;-)

*People-in-a-box. Human interactions are just so much more intense when they can't get away from one another. Soldiers in a foxhole. Das Boot. Apollo 13. It Happened One Night. Lots more. Opportunities for character growth abounding. And humor.

I just wouldn't want to abandon either one of these!
