The card reader may be the simplest solution and I'll have it with me. The hotel may have a computer "station" in the lobby that we may be able to rent by the hour to just do the few uploads we have, rather than using the line in the hotel room and getting charged by the day. We'll have to play it by ear, I think.

I'll have my digital camera and card reader too...hopefully we can find a way to upload these in real time!

Nope, not one that works. Thanks for offering to bring one. (of course my camera is set up to work with my computer and it should be a quick set up for any other camera as long as they have a cable connection for XP to reconize. :) )

Been talking about it with a friend that is going with and we have concluded that the hotels should have Internet connection but more than likely we will have to pay to use it. Something else to think about...

The Hyatt Regency does in fact have internet access. There is a computer room for guests located near the customer service desk in the lobby. The entrance to it is in the hallway going to the tube to the mall next door. I have used it before, but there is a charge by time block for use of the internet.

BLACKOUTNIGHTS

I'll try to be there Friday evening. However, Friday's are really intense for me in my job, so it's likely that it will be unfeasible. I will definately be there Saturday and intend to see the 1 p.m. session in the Centennial room. If Friday is a bust for me, I'd love to hook up Saturday with some of you and have a brew or two...maybe do lunch, who knows. Anyhow, let me know. I have just made the impulse decision to attend and have obtained a room in the Marriott. If anyone is still looking for a roommate, I accept any non-smoking female who will put up with my snoring. Write cardie at bellsouth.net.

I have a local dialup number in Atlanta for my ISP, so we can send stuff from my room for the cost of a local phone call.

I'll see everyone Friday at the browncoat table.

Unfortunately I will miss the meetup on Friday, as until 7:30pm Atlanta time I will still be at my desk working here in California. I look forward to meeting some of you browncoats on Saturday or Sunday though. If you see guy with lots of words tattooed on his arms, thats me, please say hi. I'm also trying to put together a costume,so hopefully I will stand out even more.

I just confirmed my hotel reservations....FFG can you shoot me a brief as far as the plans for everyone to meet up? I saw that were gonna try and meet around 830 after the first symposium...anyelse been decided...i.e. did we ever figure out if there is some sort of pin on to identify fffans? or fff.net regulars? I couldn't afford the hyat or marriot, but I am near centennial park [within stumbling distance of the main areas].

FIREFLYGAL

Hi Haslinger,
It's all pretty informal, meeting at the Firefly Fan table in the Marriott after the session in the Hyatt with our BDH's. This should be around 8:30. Maybe we just chat, maybe we swarm the city in search of some food, who knows. As far as identifying each other, it was let to everyone's own imagination to come up with something, brown headband, brown felt cutout of a coat. Obviously if you have a Firefly t-shirt or are in a Firefly costume, you won't need the aforementioned identifying item.

1st round on Haslinger??? Sign me up.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

For those that can not make it on Friday night, do not stress it. I am sure that some of us will be around the Browncoats.com table, where ever you might find the BDHs or in a Firefly track. Just look for us there.

Maybe we should have a secret handshake or a Browncoat signal (ala Bat Signal).

I have never been to a con... hubby hasn't been to one in over 20 years.
How early should we get there to get our tickets? We are *driving* to a Marta station every day... so we will have to leave before Marta shuts down for the night each night. We live about an hour and a half outside of Atlanta (Cleveland, to be excact).
I'm still trying to figure out how to be identifiable as a Browncoat!

Last year, I arrived at about 10:00-10:15am as I wanted to pick up my badge, grab lunch, and attend a 1:00 event. I was able to do so fine. I would check the web-site to determine what is the earliest time you can pick up the badge. The line can be kind of long, and it gets longer as the day progresses, so the earlier the better.

Haslinger,

We got day passes a year or two ago, and what we did was go to the Hyatt about 9-9:30 and get in line. Seems like we had tickets and were ready to go to events by 11:30. So it takes a while, but you can line up early. They might let you line up before 9. We will be doing that again this year, so when we pick the day we are going, we will be in line as well. Parking is a lot easier at 8:30 or 9, 'cause Atlanta likes to sleep late on Sat and Sun!
Good Luck!

See the above reply. The mistress's knowledge isn't so useless. When I got a day pass, I did exactly what she said, and it worked fine. If you're interested in saving money for future DCs, though, I would have to suggest purchasing a badge for the 2005 con at this year's con. That's when they're cheapest.

Oh, no Haslinger be prepared to wait on line! My friends and I pre-order tickets every year and you still have to stand in line to show them your little postcard and sign for the badge. Last year was the worst, we were on line Thurs about 9pm and it took like 90 minutes!! So, buying early does not stop the lines, nothing stops the lines and waiting! But it is WAY cheaper!

Fireflygal is right! Nothing stops the lines. The only difference seems to be how much paperwork you do in each, and whether you need money at the table. When the kids get a little bigger, I hope to go back to pre-ordering tickets! It would be nice if they mailed your pre-ordered badges to you ahead of time, to prevent the line problem. Guess there is some reason they don't, cause otherwise, DragonCon is a fairly well-run convention, or so it has always seemed to me. I haven't been to a lot of others, but everything at DragonCon seems to work out ok! The guests seem to come back a lot from year to year. We hope to see you all there!

The reason for the long lines at Pre-Reg last year was due to the "Spike" phenomenon. It should be better this year and the onsite lines open at 8 am, so you should be able to make a 1 pm panel no problem. The reason badges are not mailed is that the postal system has a bad habit of losing things. If y'all are in the onsite line wave or say Hi...as thats where I will be most of the Con...unless I can sneak away for Firefly panels anyways.

Don't worry about not having a t-shirt. Do you have a brown scarf, or a brown ribbon you can tie on your arm or head. Can you cut out a little brown coat and stick it to your badge? There's lots of ways to be identified as a Browncoat, feel free to use your imagination! We'll see you there!

The most convenient, and probably cheapest, way to get to the con would be by MARTA, Atlanta's "subway" system, but it won't neccessarily be the easiest way to reach your hotel. We basically have a north/south line and an east/west line. Unfortunately, there is a lot of ground in Atlanta that is not covered by the train; however, the con's hotels are very easily accessed from the Peachtree Center station which is on the north/south line (the airport is the last stop {south} on this line; if you can easily access the airport from your hotel, this would definitely be your best bet.) When you exit at Peachtree Center, just follow the signs or the costumes to the Hyatt and the Marriott Marquis. It's $1.75 per one-way trip. Keep in mind that the trains stop running at 12:30am.

Thanks for the correction Firefly Gal, 8:30 then.
Slay This, Thanks for the info. It sounds like the best way to get to the con, but I'll likely be staying late so will need to cab it back I guess. or drive myself back and forth and pay for parking. I'm at the Sheraton Gateway @ the airport, I was able to get there much cheaper through my company so, worth the 12 mile drive I guess. It's all interstate,up and down I-85, so no worries.

Quick question to all: What's the typical view on giving gifts to our BDHs. Inappropriate or OK? wanted to make a CD of at least this 1 song "Ocean Cloud" that sounds so much to me like Mal and Serenity. go here: http://www.marillion.com/discog/marbles/index.html# to read the lyric and hear a sound clip , it's the last song on disc 1 if it helps. Just wondering if they get so much crap like that, that they wouldn't even bother listening or not. Input?

actually for simplicity I copy/pasted the lyrics below:Just replace the name of the boat, "Ocean Cloud" with "Serenity" and you may see what I see, or I have a problem with my brain being missing.

Ocean Cloud
Lyrics: Hogarth
Music: Hogarth/Kelly/Mosley/Rothery/Trewavas
Dedicated to Don Allum, and the Ocean Rowers

He's seen too much of life
And there's no going back
The loneliness calls him
And the edge which must be sharpened
He’s losing it. And he knows.
But there’s a fighter in his mind and his body’s tough
The years have been unkind but kind enough

The smell of the earth
It's his favourite smell
But he’s somehow compelled to the stinging salt hell
To the place where he hurts and he’s scared
And there’s no one to tell
And no one who doesn’t listen

"You can take all the boys and the girls in the world
And I’ll trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife and a sweet Ocean Cloud is a mistress I'm allowed
for now."

"You can take all the boys and the girls in the world
I wouldn't trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife and a sweet ocean cloud is a mistress I'm allowed
for now."

"Only me and the sea
We will do as we please."

He remembers the day he was marched to the front
By the physical knuckle head teacher of games
“Look lads” he declared, "This boy's a cream puff
No guts and no muscles
No spine and no stuffing"
The whole schoolroom sniggered
And silently thanked God it wasn’t them..

But time is revenge. All the bullies grow weak
And must live with faithless women who despise them
I’ll be in Barbados in a couple of weeks
With a rum on the table and yarns by the yard
A story to tell and a story to save
..unless she changes her mind
I'll trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen to much of life so the sea is my wife
And the sweet ocean clouds will look down on my boat tonight

The wind changed
I felt it run beneath my ear
Like silk drawn across my neck
A dream of your legs
Defying gravity in love

The medium wave
Brought signals here from far away
Your tender voice riding on the sea spray
Something in the air
For those who know the signs
Something in the air
A storm..

When I was alive
When I was alive
Don't wanna remember
When I was alive

Watch me watch me
Paint this picture
Stretchin Hurtin Cursin
Watch me
Takin it Takin it Takin it Takin it....
Watch me. Watch me. God above..

Between two planets
In between the points of light
Between two distant shorelines
Here am I

Between two planets
In the black daylight of space
Between two heavenly bodies
The invisible man.
Ripping out the radio
I want to be alone

"You can take all the boys and the girls in the world
I wouldn't trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife and a sweet Ocean Cloud is a mistress I'm allowed
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife
And the sweet ocean clouds will look down on my bones tonight..

Heh - if you plan on staying real late, the trains do start running again at 5:00am.
Cabs aren't cheap, but if you only take it one way, and rely on MARTA in the morning, it may be cheaper than renting a car and paying for parking and gas. Unless you get a coveted street spot, parking could be as much as $10 - $20 a day. If you do decide to drive, be sure to keep a good map with you as Atlanta streets can be a bit awkward.
Not too sure about what the gift etiquette is, but I do know that most guests are usually given something. My instinct is that gifts are not uncommon, and so long as they're not offensive or illicit, they'll likely be well received and appreciated.

Well, I'm driving my car down from Charlotte (used to awkward roads) and have Mapquest TM maps from 1 hotel to the other. $10 a day for parking, even $20, won't kill me as I'm saving $110 a day on the room. More $ for drinking and Firefly stuff.
As for the gift thing, it's just music on blank CDs, I guess I would never know if they listen to it or not, 'less they post something about it. Doubt they would find it offensive stuff, 'less they hate good music : ), Might even convert them to Marillion fans.
See you guys soon

Another newbie(Dragon Con) question...I assume there is a good chance to get autgraphs, do I need to bring something(Firefly DVD's) along to get signed? I don't want to look even stupider.

I would take something that you want signed. I plan to take the box set as well and pull the inserts from the individual disks for them to sign. Nathan signing disc one as it has Mal's pic, Adam signing Jaynes pic, unfortunately Kaylee wasn't on a disc so I'll just have to pick one for her to sign or have her sign with Jayne's pic. Also plan to take a nice pen to be sure, I plan to take one of those with the metallic ink, so the shiny autographs will be, er, shiny.

Mostly the stars bring photos for the fans to buy and generally have a supply of different color pens. Expect to pay $20 per person, whether you buy their photo or not. It's $20/signature. Some stars are cool and will sign an extra items free but that's not gospel! If there is a special item you want signed, definitely bring it!

I just received an Email from Aaron (Director of the AMTV Track which firefly falls under)he said that gifts will be given at the "Walk of Fame" on Saturday. This is located in the Dealer Room one level below the fan table area in the Marriott. So if your going up to get an autograph you could give your gift at that time.:-)We have also been collecting funds for a group gift from the Fan Table. We will be presenting our gifts on Saturday as well.
