"Someone has to speak for these people."

Geeze, Mal needed to believe, and he found a cause. On the ragged edge, and he found a way out of himself & his worries.

Was he just lookin' to get killed in his new quest, or did he really FEEL for those folk? Did he THINK he could make a difference (and live to tell the tale)?

THAT'S why I love this movie above all other SF flicks- so many layers in the signal....

Thoughts?

Also, early in the film Mal shoots to kill. Luckily for the Operative (and Mal, it turns out), he's wearing full body armour. But later, Mal doesn't kill him when he has the easy opportunity. I love the character growth. Luke needed THREE films to grow that much!

When he first decided to fly to Miranda, he was just trying to survive. He'd been just trying to survive up to then, and him drawing his gun on the crew was the breaking point of that.

But then the Operative waved, and said that he kills women and children. And Mal got to Miranda. All those women and children. Mal's a hard guy, but women and children in trouble is his weak spot (see him taking River back in after her monkey shit scene).

After that, survival didn't matter anymore to Mal. But doing right by the victims did, up to and including doing something so awful as goading Reavers into attacking the Alliance fleet just to get by them.

When the Operative called him on it, realizing how much death he'd also caused, in the ensuing fight Mal decided to also stop the cycle of destruction that the Operative enabled.

Nice analysis Byte.
The thing that gets me about the movie is that at some point Mal embraced belief more than survival. And THAT'S what enabled him to survive!

It just hits a nerve with me I suspect.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

You know that is not the case, Chris. I love Serenity, just not as much as you, and not as much as I love Firefly. It's not even in my Top 10 Best Movies, although it is #3 for SF movies.

I have to say I really don't like the character portrayals in Serenity, especially Kaylee. She looks like crap, and throughout the movie she says really stupid things. The rest of the crew are equally annoying and totally out-of-character. I just watched it again recently, and said to myself at the end that at least Joss and gang remembered Wash's dinosaurs from Firefly. Sorry.

I suppose you say the perfect thing every time?

She was supposed to be saying stupid things...It's what girls do when they get flustered, but will still say anything to get a guy's attention...Her other brain was doing all the thinking, saavy?

As for the greasy sweaty look... SHE'S A MECHANIC!!

I liked the movie, too!

No more running. I aim to misbehave.

Serenity is the best you know that. I only wish that they had not killed Wash. Where is the random guy in the red shirt when you need him?
Everyone who worked on Serenity without big box office film experience went out there and proved that they could run with the big dogs. Even do it better than some of the bigger dogs. That's my opinion of course.

Twas an error against me-Fan to off Wash AND Book.
Essential members of the crew, not so easy to replace.
'Cause sooner or later, the story will be re-Produced.

On my mind lately is: FF1, opener,
Zoe: "Think we can bring her down, sir?"
Mal: "You need to ask?" - kisses cross.

He was a Christian. Browncoats lost the War.
So he rejects God?
Shows short-sited immaturity to me. :(

True that...............

The thing that gets me about the movie is that at some point Mal embraced belief more than survival. And THAT'S what enabled him to survive !

Remember, it's what Book talked about with him before the order was given. I finally got it after so many viewings.

It is the reaction of a flawed man. Perfect he is not. I think back to the BDM opening minutes when they go to rob the bank. He uses River to get paid, but at the first sign of trouble, who grabs River and off to the Mule.

In the Maidenhead bar scene, he pulls his weapon but he doesn't pull the trigger, neither does River. Foreshadowing?

In Serenity's dining/meeting table: Jayne asks Mal "In earnest, why'd you bring her back on?"

He is flawed, like any of us, but shows his true colors, even with Inara when he goes to rescue her.

Great film, many layers.

^^^ THIS!!!

I honestly don't think any movie will ever surpass this one for me.
2005- the pinnacle year of SF movie production.
It's all catch up from here.
Maybe small independent films might come close; Moon was pretty excellent IMO...

Loved the response of folk here!

Although I enjoyed Serenity, I would have never become the fan-boy that I am if it weren’t for Firefly. Joss W. defiantly had a hit on his hands if the Evil Empire hadn’t stepped in! Can you imagine the status of Firefly now!!?

Firefly is easily the best sci/fi fiction entertainment posted to tv in a long, long while. And since I’ve been around a while I feel that I can attest to that.

Anyhoo, the BDM is what lead me to FF, so in that regard I am grateful. As far as the movie and the television series folding hands together into a likeness, I will say that Joss missed the target with that one, JMO. The mind-meld of Firefly to Serenity did not work out well. Not that I didn’t like the BDM, it’s just that I view them as separate entities. One will link to the other, just as a caterpillar will morph into a moth in late Spring, …..that making any sense?

Anyway , in the television series I never believed that Malcolm Reynolds totally ever lost his belief in GOD! In my opinion Captain Reynolds was calling the MAN upstairs out for expression! Wanting the Divinity to make a factual statement of existence. Course that would never happen! Either you believe in a Divinity or you do not. That is a decision of your own device.

Anyhoo, loved FF and I enjoyed the BDM. Nuff said, still holding, Z

Oh, he lost it IMO. And what I find amazing is that despite that, in part due to Book's final words, he found belief again. In life.

I feel the same way as ZZETTA 13 regarding Mal's belief in God.

To use Shakespeare: He doth protest too much.

DALEK!

Mal may very well still believe in God but simply has no faith in him at all.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.
