Is There Any Charactor On FireFly that annoys you?

I was just wondering if any of the charactors on FF annoys anyone..because all I ever hear is how great all the charactors are..and I agree that each one is great in their own way..but even if you like a charactor they can still annoy you

For me its Kaylee, I like her charactor..but she annoys the heck out of me and for so long I was wondering why does this one charactor out of all the charactors rub me the wrong way so much

well the other day I put on my FF DVD of the 1rst episodes of Sernity and I played the commentary..this was my 1rst time listening to it..and then it hit me..just why I found Kaylee so annoying..Joss Wheadon basically confired with his own words exactly what I felt and what I was thinking...

he said something to the effect that if Kaylee says something then it must be so...Kaylee's stamp or seal of approval so to speak..for instance if Kaylee says that Mal is a good Captain ..then it must me so..because its coming from Kaylee..we the viewers are suppose to get a sense of this from Kaylee..

well I'm rebellious by nature..I don't like being told what to do or what I'm suppose to think ..I'll make up my own mind thank you very much...thats just a part of my make up..and I can detect those kinds of nuances..so hearing Joss on the commentary confirm what I was already thinking..just made be go ah ha ...thats it..well thats just part of it a big part of it yes!! ..the other part is the Simon Factor...

Simon and River are my two favorites equally..and I kind of resent the fact..that Simon's only option is Kaylee...that is why in a previous thread..I offered up River being a second option to him..not in a physical sense..but in a soul mate sense..because I believe that everyone should have choices...nor as it stands would Simon Kaylee be believable to me..Jayne Kaylee yes..Simon Kaylee no..and I wouldn't want her putting her stamp of approval so throughly on Simon it would just common him down..and that wouldn't be much fun or very interesting!!

so back to the question are there any charators who annoys you on FF..C'mon be honest!!lol

on the several occasions we have watch multiple eps while introducing friends to the show, river is the one that tends to rub people the wrong way. it think when watched once week at a time it isn't so bad, but several hours in a row was much...for some.

even when the show was on fox the character never bothered me, but did my fiance a bit.

My boyfriend found Wash's character to be "useless". I can see where he'd get that impression, as Wash really didn't do much but provide brief comic relief aside from War Stories. Had the show gone on, I'm sure we'd have seen a lot more of Wash. Personally, I love Wash :)

The only character I've found annoying at times is Inara, and usually when she's being philosophical. Example, in Jaynestown, when she describes her shuttle as a "sacred place of union". Maybe I'm just not in touch with that part of myself ;) I like her most of the time though!

you guys are probably gonna kill me, but I just don't get the river facitation. I just don't care. Maybe thats why i wasn't as thrilled with Areal or OiS, the major River charchter builders. Don't get me wrong, they're all wonderful episodes, but i wanna know about Book, or to have somehthing happen between Mal and Inara. I just don't care about River.

I have to say Simon. I like the usefulness of everyone else. Although he is the token "Doctor who saves the day/character" here and there, I just can't find the appeal.
His appearance leads me to believe that he is not in anyway related to River. I would like to think that's because they are really not related in the story line. The two of them bear NO LIKENESS as siblings supposedly from the same parents, and that REALLY bugs me. (superficial, I know , they are just actors)
I don't like Simon's lack of roughness, there's not much tumble in his appearance and action. I know he saved his sister from the hands o'blue, but it was done through payments and third parties. If it had been more of a jail break with him physically removing her from the diabolical blue handedness I guess I'd like him more.
Last reason, the simper in some of the things he says, especially to Kaylee. GRR!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Most of the villains are too one-dimensional. Jubal talks too much to be an effective bad guy. Niska is too twisted on torture to be credible as a monopolist. The Badger is too damn petty. Blue Hands are too gruesome.

I prefer my villians with more subtlety. In order to have really good "good guy" characters, you have to have really good "bad guy" characters. They need to be just as credible, just as complicated, just as whole. Sometimes, they need to be just as good- people caught in situations that force them to do bad things, or even situations where doing "good things" can have bad consequences. I guess that gets to the nheart of my belief is that most of the ills in society are not caused by bad people but by bad systems. By making the bad people so uniformly greedy, stupid, and conceited you run the risk of downgrading the whole show.

See, I'm not writing an English paper or a book, either. I just don't want to look completely uneducated (for instance, using "careless", when I actually mean "care less"). But hey. If you want to look ignorant and uneducated, be my guest.

But really, what's with the insults? I mean, fascist?? I never threw any insults out. I'd come to expect better form this board. Seems to me you're are a little touchy. Perhaps because we can't seem to find the period on our keyboard?

Jubal's talking is what makes him a pretty complex guy, instead of a faceless drone. Niska's torture/philosophy makes him more than a ruthless bad guy, instead making him a ruthless sadistic bad guy looking to start a book club. Badger's not really a villain, in the sense that he doesn't work directly against the crew. The Blue Hands are 1-D, creepy, robots, but that's a nice change for me.

I never liked Inara very much until I saw "Trash". That rocked. I didn't like Saffron, ever. She was an evil little thing. Hopefully she's currently the guest of an Alliance penal institution, and for an extended stay, too!

Tracy's motivations were rather confusing in "The Message"; first he was flirting with Kaylee, then drawing a gun on her-- what's up with that?

Richard Burgi was great as the villain, though. Loved him in Starship Troopers 2 and the first season of 24, and he made for a good villain in Firefly.

I didn't like "Heart of Gold". Least favorite ep ever, and by connection I didn't like any of the characters introduced in it.

Book sometimes rubs me the wrong way, actually. Not because of anything inherent in his character, but because of the way he is so often handled in the episodes. It just always feels to me like there's an undercurrent of disrespect for his worldview in a way that there isn't for any other character. When Jayne explains his worldview in Jaynestown, flawed as it is ("There ain't people like that. There's just people like me."), we listen. When, earlier in the same episode, Book earnestly explains that "You don't fix faith, River. It fixes you," this doesn't get nearly the same weight, and that storyline quickly bogs down into a joke. The hair thing was funny, sure, but it bugs the hell out of me every time, because I was much more interested in the results of their conversation.

The other, related issue I have with Book is that the whole I'm-secretly-badass thing really overwhelms everything else about him at times. On the other hand, for being secretly a badass, he's pretty bumbling. He gets his ass kicked by Early, then lies about it (which REALLY bugged me), he mishandles River, he doesn't know what to do in the pilot at the end of the episode, he doesn't know what to do in Out of Gas when they're going to die... he does get to be awesome sometimes (War Stories and the end of The Message come to mind), but usually because he's badass, not because he's a shepherd.

So there's my issue, not with a character, but with the handling of the character.

For the record, when I showed my friends the eps, they were really annoyed by River until... jeeze, I think it might have been Ariel, or even War Stories. They called her "useless." War Stories especially sort of changed their minds on that...

And as for grammar, use as much of it as you want (I certainly do), but unless other people's lack thereof seriously affects your ability to read the post, leave them alone. Grammar on the Internet, for good or for ill, is very much a personal choice.

ATHerton annoyed the heck out of me. He was so pompous. Out of the regulars Inara was the only character who sometimes annoys me, and only sometimes. I just don't get why she won't admit to loving Mal. Plus I'm like Mal in that I don't see the appeal of high-class society (fancy balls, airs-and-graces, that kind of thing).But I like her most of the time.

P.S. I'm gonna stick my nose in and try to play peacemaker. Pirate Jenny, Inevitablebetrayal, and co: please don't bicker. You've obviously upset each other, but it seems like it was accidentle. It happens. Everyone on this site usually gets on so well, it seems a shame to see animosity

Once again, what's with the gorram insults? As stated above, I expect better out of the people that post here. I never insulted anyway. Merely poked a little fun at Jenny. Since when is that a crime? Now I'm a "jerk", who's being compared to Mussolini, for Pete's sake! Ridiculous!

I'm sorry if it offends those on the board, but the way that you write isn't unimportant. There're only two ways of evaluating a message-board denizen: 1) his/her ideas, 2) his/her writing. That's it. And the hell of it is that if one's writing is for shit, one's ideas will never come through in the first place! So excuse the hell out of me if I punctuate and capitalize.

I guess the lesson here is that you get flamed for teasing people on the Firefly boards. What a let down. I'll make sure never to elucidate my opinion--or make a joke--ever again.

I don't think the whole Jaynee/Kaylee thing would be good because Jayne doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to hang around, I think Jayne sees love as weakness and you gotta take care of yourself (even though he takes care of his family etc) I think Jayne would bring Kaylee down and make her sad. Jayne may carry a tourch but not lite the fire. He'll have the dreams, but not willing to leave someone with his problems.
I don't know if anyone really bothers me because they all have their places and with out one of the show wouldn't work. I think Book annoys me because he's so secretive, but that makes him interesting.

I have to admit, none of the characters annoyed me. They were all pretty cool, even if I didn't like them (of course, in those cases, I wasn't meant to like them e.g. Saffron).

Have to say, I'm with Inevitable on the whole punctuation/grammar thing. There's a line when sloppy punctuation (a lifestyle choice thing, and one I'm fine with) becomes incomprehensibility. I don't like having to decode what someone else is saying. I'm not trying to be rude or offend anyone, but there it is.

The character I'd find most annoying would probably be Tracy. If I was annoyed by any of the big 9 I wouldn't be watching the show. But seriously, I'm not sure how old the character is supposed to be but he acts like an adolescent. He acts on every drive except that of simple survival and then expects everyone else to clean up his mess. And yet, he's still not able to trust the people that have cleaned up his mess over and over again.

Hey guys,

About the spelling thing. I have to say I'm pretty useless at spelling, punctuation etc.. If I'm doing something important like a CV or a report for college then I will make sure I check it first. But when you are making a large number of posts on a board in a conversation type way it's not really reasonable to expect someone to get someone to check every single message for punctuation for them.

The thing that I've always liked about this board is that it's so laid back that I've always felt I could post here without worrying about going over every post I write.

Just because I'm useless at English (and I am working on improving it) it doesn't make my opinions on other topics any less valid and if you don't like the way a poster writes just don't read their messages.

Anyway sorry for the rant. Back to the main feature.

Book's dialogue sometimes annoys me. Also Magistrate Higgins' son annoyed me quite a bit.

Other than guest stars, I enjoy all the characters of Firefly. I love Simon most especially, his loyalty and intelligence. Each has their place, and it is the interactions which really shine, the way they behave differently with different people. So many characters on other shows are sort of one note, behaving the same in all situations.

When I first watched the show I found Jayne really annoying, I thought he was a pig. But when i got the DVD's I saw a whole new side to him and now he's one of my favourite characters.
Strangely, i would have expected to find River annoying but I don't. I'm usually annoyed by irrational over-the-top-crazy characters, but I think River's really sweet. Not once has she annoyed me.

I really thought that your post was funny in a rolling my eyes kind of way.. unfortuantly for you ..you bring up some good points about the way you write not being unimportant...but you come off as so arrogant..that it pales and overshadows your points...you might have the best grammer in the world but you could use a few lessons in diplomacy and internet ediquette... you just come off as a gorram ass

I like all the characters and have a tough time dealing with the thought of any of them leaving. I suppose that I feel this way because the stories for each of them have not yet been developed and I can't face the thought of them just ending.

I have a thought about Jayne. He gets my vote for the best conflicted character in a series. Most of the time these characters (Dr. Smith in "Lost in Space", for example) don't end up making sense--a reasonable person would just shoot them. Jayne on the other hand would be hard to shoot and he really helps in the tight spots.

I haven't yet found any of the characters annoying...

When I first watched it I wasn't immediately keen on Mal, but as the show progressed I realised just how great he was.

Now though Jayne is the best for me and Early was the best visiting character. I hope he comes back somehow, I thought he was an inspired villain.

But as shows go, for nine characters not to have any of them annoy me is incredible. By the time Buffy ended I hated even Xander!

Simon. Cannot stand Simon. Sure he does the whole save the day Doctor thing now and them but his overall character bugs the hall out of me.

He is a sniveling rich kid who not only looks down his nose at his newfound predicament in the beginning of the series, but he continues to resist any attempt to adapt to his new environment. Yes, he saved his sister, but who did he leave behind? Instead of just focusing on what HE wanted, why did he not instead find what was the purpose of the school and find if they were doing this to other children.

I do ‘ship of the Janyn and Kaylee. Forgive me for that one. But I want to know why Simon must see her as “his only option” instead of the lovely person that she is? He is of a kind of man that I have detested all my life. Gutless. He insists on dancing around the subject of a relationship and never gets the balls to do something about it. When Kaylee grows tire of the waiting game and takes a step up, he is then repulsed by her overt actions.

Rereading that I find that I was a bit more overzealous in my attack of Simon than I had originally intended. However I can think of no way to restate my opinion in a more gentile way. I just want him to grow a set and stop thinking everything is about him and his sister.

Well, Vena, I'm not going to flame you, but I am going to sort-of-disagree with you. Personally, I blame Simon's flaws on his sheltered upbringing, rather than any deficiency in himself. He is dealing with things that he barely knew existed, and if he did know of them, he'd learned that they were bad.

He doesn't resist all attempts to adapt to his new environment. His planning the heist in Ariel and being willing to take up arms in War Stories show that. So do his attacks on Dobbson in the pilot and Early in Objects in Space, but they show a lot more than that: They show that, at least where the people he cares about are concerned, he will do anything he has to with little regard for his own safety. That doesn't seem gutless to me.

He is selfish in his selflessness, and he is shy. He is flawed in that way. I would argue, however, that all the characters of Firefly (and, indeed, any narrative) are defined at least as much by their flaws as by their virtues. Further, every character on Firefly was developing, and I think Simon was slowly moving in a direction that ultimately you'd approve of.

In your defense, sometimes one's personal dislike for a character, if it's visceral enough, can overwhelm other considerations. I had to stop watching Friends for a while, even though I think it's hilarious, because I found myself wanting to kill Rachel. I simply despise her.

In short, I'm not trying to stomp on you, but I do take issue with some of your assertions about Simon.

PS-- Ask me sometime which Firefly character I'm most similar to...

For the first few episodes until, well until around "Shindig" or "Safe", I found River to be just sorta, I don't know, a bit on the overdramatic side. Then, the accent came, the creepy blood quote came and I guess I warmed to her.

I agree, you have all good points. You brought up some things I had failed to take into consideration.

I think in the end it just comes down to the fact that his personality rubs me the wrong way. Nothin’ wrong with that I suppose. I just keep waiting for him to do something… I want to say decisive, but that’s the wrong word. In general I see him as weak and that characteristic in a man *REALLY* bugs me.

Odd how that works isn't it? There have been a small, but measurable number of people in my life who have simply irritated the crap out of me for reasons I couldn't explain. Every time I would try to explain, I would end up describing symptoms of my dislike, not causes. Same for some characters on TV.

Bad chemistry. Or they transmit at the wrong end of the spectrum. Or comms protocol incompatibility. Something...

Fireflew, I agree with you about Joss's atheism coloring his presentation of religion. Now, it's one thing when characters in a story disrespect something. I once had somebody raise the bigotry flag because somebody in a story I wrote spoke disparagingly of Jews... but the story was set in the midwest in 1898, so I was only being honest. Characters are allowed prejudices, so Mal's allowed his. But Book's faith is disrespected not only by other characters, but by the way it's presented.

Sheesh, I sound like a Bible-thumper, don't I? I'm not even Christian. But I do think that Book's viewpoint deserves equal weight.

I've got some thoughts on the idea of naming Atherton Wing or another villain as somebody who annoys you, but I can't put those thoughts into coherent shape right now. Maybe later.

Vena, I'm going to argue that Simon is indeed inactive-- until he must act, and then he does, quickly and decisively. I also completely acknowledge that sometimes a particular person, real or fictional, can just get under your skin.

Why, that's a very good question, Vena, and I'm glad you asked. Although my worldview is probably closer to Kaylee (which explains why I came up as her on the "Which Firefly character are you?" questionaire), in many ways I am very similar to... you ready? Simon.

Now, I'm not awkward like Simon. I can talk to people, although I do stick my foot in my mouth pretty regularly. But... this is hard to explain.

Simon takes everything so *seriously*. Everything's a thing with him. Sure, he can joke around, but ultimately, he takes crises (see Out of Gas, Safe, Objects in Space, etc), and conflicts (see his conversation with Jayne in Trash) very, very seriously. And this stems primarily from the fact that he thinks about everything (except maybe the next thing out of his mouth). He's very introspective. He also values gentlemanliness and politeness. He tends not to act until he feels he must, and then he acts swiftly and effectively.

And all the statements in the above paragraph apply to me. It's weird, though... I take everything seriously, but I love comedy and constantly make jokes. I think about everything, except the things I decide not to think about, which I can do a remarkably good job of ignoring. I'm introspective, but extroverted. And I value politness but loathe formality. Doesn't make much sense to me, but whatever.

In any case, I'm not exactly like Simon, but if there's anybody on the ship I am like, it's him. I wonder, if you met me, if I'd rub you the wrong way.
