So if you could obtain a special syrum to drink down and then you'd be fluent in a language of your choice what would it be? I'd obviously choose Irish (Gaelic). Gaeilge Abu!
What would you choose?

America now?

Spanish.

America tomorrow?

Chinese.

Reasons?

Short term, I'd be hired on the spot, tomorrow, for nearly any job I applied for if I was bilingual in Spanish.

Long term?????

If those illegals don't learn Chinese in the next 20 years like we should with a 16 Trillion debt to China, they'll be just as employable as your average Community College US graduate that doesn't know how to speak anything other than English.

F-French

F-Romance Language

F-Any European language trapped by the Euro (See, all Anglo Saxon countries other than the UK which already speaks English better than we in America do)

Learning new (relevant) languages is the "new" Darwin....

If I had to be practical I would choose Spanish as stated earlier more job opportunities. When I can just dream? French. I have always wanted to speak French.

I took French in High School. Have not used it for a damn thing, except I know what a Le Croque Monsieur is. It doesn't actually make you any more sexy, and it's not the most fun language to learn.... Go somewhere they actually don't hate 'Mericans, too...

Nuh-Uh Wish!!!!!

One of my exes was fluent in French. It was a TOTAL turn on! She'd used to purr in my ears in french in a low somewhat throaty voice whenever she was feeling randy and it would drive me nuts. Then again, I was only 19 back then and a strong breeze against my denim could essentially do the same thing, but I'm pretty sure that voice in French would do just as well today.

What if we sweep practical under the rug? I chose how I feel, knowing Irish isn't going to get me anywhere in the job scene etc. but Irish makes me happy. In real life, the old fashioned way, I suck at learning languages, I've tried and failed. So I like playing this syrum game.
So Six, practicality aside what would you learn? If your answers are the same that's okay, but I want to know what you really want, just for your own enjoyment.

After swallowing my Irish syrum if given another oppertunity I'd choose to have
Welsh, Scottish Gaelic (yes its quite similar to Irish, especially Ulster Irish, but its a little different, like Spanish and Portugese so why not?), Breton, Lakota, Old Norse, Mongolian (so when I go back in time with my time machine from the other thread I can talk to Genghis Khan, better make that Old Mongolian :)) Maori, Latin, and Finnish, just for fun.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

With those parameters cleared up, that's a great question Riona.

If I could learn 2 languages fluently, they'd be Latin and Greek.

A majority of the English Language is based off of those two languages combined.

I have a book called "Word Power Made Easy" that I've probably read 3 times through. It's a very long process reading a book like that, since it's more a study guide than a novel. What I found amazing about it was that once you understand how roots and prefixes and suffixes of the English language work, you can almost instinctually "know" the definition of an unfamiliar word in a magazine or novel just because you already know other words based somewhat on that word.

Have you ever been reading a book and then noticed at some point that you have read a page or so and your mind was wandering on auto-pilot and you don't remember what you were just reading? If you're anything like me, I can guaranty that unless you were suffering massive amounts of stress from the day, the reason why you lost your focus on the story can be tracked down to one single word written that you didn't know the definition of that derailed your ability to keep immersed in the story.

It still happens to me now, but it happens much less frequently. And many times when I do catch myself doing it and trace it back to the problem, I can think hard enough with the knowledge of words I have to know the relative definition of a new word without even having to look it up.

If for no other reason than my ability to enjoy reading Novels more, Latin and Greek are at the top of my list.
