Ok straight to it , both joss whedon and nathan fillion have mentioned that they both see the first firefly movie:serenity as the first part in a trilogy.Great, cool cant wait etc...but hang on a mo....have all the cast signed on for parts 2 & 3 ? and if not, bugger!.They had trouble getting the cast together for the first film ,if there not signed for the next films its gonna get tougher getting them together for the next 2.
Plus alan,s(wash) film career is going from strength to strength (i,robot / dodgeball / serenity) and joss whedon is in talks to take over the next x men film. What ever happens lets hope its good news for serenity/firefly and we get our trilogy and have all our cast (well the ones still standing at the end of the first film)back for 2 & 3.

Yeah, that's why I'm not liking the Whedon X-men thing. Even if he makes a kick-ass X-Men movie, it still won't mean as much to me as Serenity 2 and 3. But assuming Serenity is sucessful enough for a sequel, he'd have to postpone doing them to do X-Men 3.

Of course, if Serenity is box office failure, at least this way we'll get a better X-Men movie out of the deal.

I was at dragon*con and it was said by Jewel (I think) that everyone has signed on for a two and a three, but there is no promise that they will happen.

I honestly think if there's a greenlight for a sequel, and the cast loves Firefly as much as they all claim, there would be no hesitation to clear their schedules for Serenity 2 and 3.

On that note, I have to revisit the notion that "Serenity" might not be the best movie title. Is anybody else having trouble with "Serenity 2" as a title? Maybe they could change the title for the next movie, but that's not very marketable...

you know, i would have to agree. i love the name of the ship, but i have always kind of thought the name of the movie was not the best choice, especially after seeing the little teaser that someone posted from comicon. not that i have any better suggestions.

It'll be a while before any sequel gets greenlit, after DVDs to be sure, as DVDs make so much of a movie's profit that the companies only decide how much to finance any potential sequel after DVD release. Things that fail at the cinema often get a big burst of life on their DVD releases.

Joss could write X3 and have begun directing (as they still haven't changed the release date I'm guessing they're going to fast-track it) before Serenity 2 is greenlit. Once Serenity 2 is greenlit Joss'll need to write a script and make sure everyone can get back and do casting...

It basically means if he arranges work now (X3) to begin straight after Serenity, it pretty much wont interfere with any potential sequel.

Well, if the rest of the world doesn't come up with enough money to encourage investment in movie sequels, at least we've got some great comic books to look forward to.

To add my own two cents:
I don't love how they're filming these movies so separately from each other, even though I see the necessity. What I liked about Lord of the Rings was that all three movies were essentially filmed in one big effort, and only small changes and reshoots were made in between movie releases. It gave us a consistent trilogy, consistent release dates, and built up excellent tension.
On the other hand, I'm sure Joss will be able to figure out a way to make the trilogy work, even if not in the same way LotR did.

still, though, lord of the rings was already basically written before the movies were made. i would imagine that would help a great deal with saving time. also, new line sank $300 million into those movies because they knew of the built in fan base. the matrix sequels (also filmed side by side) were probably given close to $200 million+ after the first was so successful. universal would probably be unwilling to spend $80-100 million+ for three movies that they could not be sure would make the money back because if the first one does not do well, they would still have two movies to release and market for and do ad campaigns for (even though they probably would not do a good job) or just release on video which would be a big financial hit. it would be too risky.

Unfortunatly the movie was concieved as a singular story finishing off the stories from the series and not as a springboard for a trilogy. If it were a 3 part story Joss has already written then I think the LoTR style would have been good. As it is, I don't think it's necessary. Also this way we get 3 stories instead of 1 big one which I actually prefer.

As far as a trilogy i will say--yes it will happen, but only if the movie does excellent.Usually a hit is when a film makes double the budget so 40 mil budget,10 mil advertising= 50 mil,so it has to make 100 mil or close to it(start saving yer pennies)now i know the dvd is gonna kick ass in sales,so if the film only makes 90 mil i believe withthe dvd sales = trilogy.Hopefully when universal goes for the follow up joss will pull a "peter jackson" and say it would be cheaper to just make both at once.As far as the title im mixed but overall i do like it besides thats the job of the trailer announcer"blah blah blah, reavers, blah blah blah, they fight to survive.............on a ship known as--(wait for it-cue title card)SERENITY.i cant stress this enough those first 2-3 weeks are sooooooooooooooo important it has to make big #'s the first weekend say 50-60 mil, the next weekend always drops anywhere between 30-60% so 2nd week take would be 20-30 mil, then the third weekend is maybe 10,after that is star wars,HOWEVER i do think if people dont want to get in the crazy mess of sw serenity is the alternative, plus one BC mention somewhere else that hopefully critics who dont like star wars will say something like"....skip this and see a great sci-fi film SERENITY."heres hoping.anyhoo, the next few years will be shiny for us fans with the film(& hopefully 2 followups)and the comic! so the adventures will continue in some form or another. "huh."

Yes, at Dragon Con it was said that everyone was signed up for 3 films and everyone wants to do them. Adam said several times that the possiblity of 2 more greatly depends on the first 2 weekends of Box Office Receipts. so see it early and often.
As for Joss doing X3, this could only serve to build up the studios confidence in him when it and serenity are sucessful, and that lends itself to a boost in the budgets for Serenity 2& 3, which I see as a good thing for everyone.
Jewel stated that the studio was very happy with the way filming went and happy with the project in general. Several days of filming were apparently wrapped early, studios like that kinda thing. The only thing that could stop 2 & 3 is a bad first two weeks at the theatre. And I don't think we'll let that happen.
