DOUBLESHINY

From UK Sci-Fi magazine SFX

Have you stuck to your guns as regards no sound in space, or was there pressure from the studio to insert sound effects?

Well, it's not finished yet, but so far the studio has backed my every play.

Will the theme tune you wrote be used in the film? Either as the theme, or someone strumming it by the fireside?

Nahh. Well, maybe. I sure as hell won't be singing it.

What has been the most exciting moment on the set of the movie?

Watching Summer's new 'dance'.

Will there be any cameos from Buffy or Angel actors (the ones who were already in Firefly don't count)?

No. This isn't a party for my friends, it's a movie.

Why the name change from Firefly to Serenity?

It's what the movie is about. The fans will recognise it, and non-fans won't confuse it with a show they might have heard of. Everyone wins.

Has the experience of directing a movie been significantly different from directing a TV show?

It's more fluid - every scene dominoes everything you've done or will do.

What's the most ambitious shot in the movie?

A four and a half minute 'one-er'

Which actor do you think will hate you the most after this shoot?

If they don't all hate me equally, I'm doing something wrong.

How will you celebrate the final days shooting? Apart from sleeping.

Prayer. Contemplation, and possibly a violent crime spree.

How much sleep have you had since filming began?

Mother...? The lights are....Why are there mice?

What has been the most satisfying moment on set?

Reboarding the ship.

Has the script evolved at all while shooting, or are you a Hitchcock-style director with everything rigidly laid out in your mind?

Little bit of both.

Will we get to see hoardes of Reavers?

Is that what you really want?

Which on-going plot strands from the show had to be dropped from the movie?

The involvement of Blue Sun in the 'Big Mystery'

How have you made the movie accessible to people who have never seen the show?

By telling the story from the start - not the same scenes, but the story from a new perspective.

What do you think about the show's cancellation now that it has enabled you to achieve one of your lifetime ambitions - to direct a movie?

I will always mourn the show. This movie may be a beautiful butterfly, but I loved that damn caterpillar.

Can you reveal one line of dialogue from the movie that you really like?

'We'll meet again, Spider-Man!' (Wait - which movie?)

If the movie is a success, will you ever return to television?

TV is an awesome medium.

Why should no-one miss Serenity?

Because it's exciting, funny, scary, surprising, involving ad meaningful. At least, that's the plan. But even if I totally fail, the actors are brilliant and deeply pretty. Plus, hovercraft chase!

I wonder... was he being sarcastic about the Blue Sun thing, or was it truly dropped??

It really doesn't seem like that would be possible, does it? Maybe it just takes a way back burner for this film... Although if the plot revolves around Summer as I seem to have heard rumored somewhere, it doesn't seem like the hands of blue could be forgotten, so much... Yeah, I was confused by that too. And why'd he give up that piece of info? Joss is usually tighter-lipped than that...

I've heard several times that the Blue Sun mystery has been dropped from the film... my guess is to focus on the more important issues. But hopefully, he'll get to Blue Sun in the (God willing) sequels.

The movie was already estimated to be about 2 and a half hours long by Jewel... it'll most likely get cut down to around 2 hours for theatrical release. The movie has to focus on River, The Reavers, hopefully Book's past, and the seven other characters...

...anyways, thanks a TON for posting that interview!

I too have heard more than once that Blue Sun will not be a part of this film, but let's remember, there is hope for more than one film. The Blue Sun plot line I think is a major, deep, ongoing plot. My prediction is that while Blue Sun will not be part of Serenity directly, when the second movie is made we'll get to see all kinds of things about Blue Sun that will make us go back to watch Serenity again to catch all the little hints dropped and things alluded to about this plot. It just seems to me to be Joss' way.

Typical Joss.
The only thing that could be said to put me off this movie is that the cast had been replaced and Joss had nothing to do with the movie...
Now, THAT'S scary.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Thanks for posting the interview.

I would not be overly concerned w/ the Blue Sun plot line being dropped from the BDM. Odds are w/ having to retell the stories of how everyone gets onboard, filling in newbies on back story, Reavers, introducing the characters, and did I mention Reavers, there was no way to work Blue Sun and the Blue Hand Men into the BDM.

If all goes according to Joss's ingenious plan I am sure that we will see Blue Sun in the 2nd film.

Why do you associate the Blue Hands with Blue Sun? I always thought they were Alliance spooks. Not that I think the blue hands have to be in the movie, but just because the blue sun/alliance connection isn't discussed doesn't necessarily mean the blue hands are absent.

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

I don't mind that the Blue Sun theme is not going to be explored in depth. One of the things I love about Firefly is that there are so many themes going on that are enjoyable. I'm sure Joss had a hard time slimming down all the threads but this movie has to be efficient and effective (introduce new people to a complex 'verse and hook them enough to get recommendations). The Blue Sun storyline is one that hasn't been developed as overtly as other lines. It was actually a theme that I totally did not pick up on when I watched Firefly on TV. It was only from listening to the commentary on the DVDs and going online and finding this site that I even became aware of all the Blue Sun references.

I believe the Blue Hands are definitely linked to Blue Sun. Certainly it is not a coincidence that the Blue Hands were blue gloves. Add to that the fact that they had no problem killing a room full of Alliance Feds to get to River simply because they talked to her.

I think that Blue Sun has some serious pull in the Alliance due to money & influence. For all we know they not only make drinks but could have weapons contracts (River?) w/ the Feds.

maybe he just merged blue sun and the alliance together to simplify it. so now the alliance altered River not blue sun working with the alliance

Blue Sun is never explicitly mentioned in the show either (That I can recall - closest I can think of is River slashing Jayne's Blue Sun shirt, but that's not exactly explicit). So it could be that they play it off as Alliance for now, then in later films (or a new show, if you believe in major miracles) it could be revealed that it's Blue Sun Corp that's pulling the strings.

There's sarcasm throughout the entire interview. Answering questions with questions and such too. He gives an awfully quirky interview, doesn't he?

Drillian... what you say sound right to me.

OK, if they don't have Blue Sun, we are still talking about one shiny movie. But if they don't have the TV theme?! It would break my heart. I loved that theme. Maybe the best I ever heard on TV.

Wow. I know Joss likes doing shots in one take whenever possible, but that's going to be amazing. You have to wonder how many times the cast had to do it over if someone screwed up.

You know, change the the words "final days shooting" to "graduation" and the word "filming" to "the semester" and this is a fairly good description of my life.

Thanks, DoublyShiny, for sharing this interview with those of us Stateside. It was great.

By the way, the association of the blue hand men with blue sun comes from a production picture of the model they based the blue hand men landing in with the words "blue sun ship" carefully written neatly under it, and that in ariel there are blue sun refrences up the wa-zoo

If people only beleive wahts in a movie, their damn well sure beleiving Serenity.

I hope he brings back Blue Sun. The machinations of a powerful, manipulative corporation is much more interesting than a bunch of animal-like monsters in outer space.

Greetings&Felecitations:

I'd really hoped Joss would've had either
Amy Acker or Juliette Landau in the movie or as
a recurring guest character once they restart the series. Can there be any doubt that if we push hard enough? I caught the Blue Sun pretty quickly
since it seemed a huge corporation. Like a thing
from Stackpole's Dark Conspiracy or Williams' Hard
Wired or Gibson's Count Zero.
As it is I can hardly wait for the movie and
later for the director's edition of the DVD. Hear
Me Joss??? :-)

That was a cool interview - thanks for posting it - but Joss was unnaturally loose lipped about the non-inclusion of the 'Blue Sun' story thread... I hope the corporation exists in some form in the film because those 'hands of blue' agents are truly freaky - but i guess we'll have to be content with 'reavers' as the bad guys - as the comic con teaser seems to suggest...
