Sorry to say, but the Oscars were a bit disappointing. Ordinarily, I love Ellen but she bogs down the Oscars something fierce. Her dry humor and rather mundane approach to comedy is often times uninspired, with one exception - the Group Selfie; now that was great television. It's no wonder they haven't asked her back in 7 years.

The sending out for pizza fell flat, joking that the show was over (when the actor and actress categories were still not revealed) laid there. Even the opening monologue lacked zip and polish. That Liza Minelli joke was ugly and in poor taste (even if it was true). A couple of her jokes got me chuckling, but none were memorable (except the Liza joke, but that was memorable for a different reason, not good).

The best parts of the night was the nominated songs like Happy and the Moon Song (from Her). Also I really liked the tribute to Judy Garland and the Wizard of Oz. Pink was great (but then, she's always great). Ellen, it seemed to me, just couldn't establish an Oscar pace, like Billy Crystal or Hugh Jackman.

She kept roaming around the auditorium making sly comments and cute observations, but had no real funny jokes about the attendees, other than in her monologue. The stars were ready to go that extra mile to have fun with the evening (that Selfie Moment was inspired or they were so bored they jumped into action to stimulate themselves). Why even Kevin Spacey dusted off an old favorite - his impression of Jack Lemon was as good as it was brief.

Add to that the fact that there weren't many surprises in the Oscar categories, and you get a rather ho-hum evening of predictable non events.
Okay, it wasn't all bad. Like I said, I liked the musical numbers. Happy was infectious, the Moon Song was haunting and beautiful (Karen-O was great). Almost forgot U2, they were awesome. The tributes to film heroes were well put together, but not much else captured my imagination. In her one short appearence, Whoopi was funnier. I don't get it. Is it Ellen, the writers or just that the Oscars have fallen way behind the times.

Oscars, next year, please bring back Hugh Jackman or maybe give Fallon a try. Here's an idea - somehow convince Amy Poehler and Tina Fey to take a whack at it. They gotta do something to resuscitate the patient.

I'm with Gingy from Shrek "I hate those ball shows, they bore me to tears!"
Are you really THAT bored that you are critique-ing an awards show??? I'm mean, it's snow day 5012 here, so yanno....I get the feeling...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I also have not watched any award show in many, many years. What's the point? Even if I was interested in who wins (which I'm not), I could just wait and see a list at imdb or another site later in the evening (which I did).

I spent the evening watching Veronica Mars in anticipation of the movie coming out 11 days from now. I'm more than halfway through Season Two now, should be able to finish up by next week.

I thought Ellen knocked it out of the park personally. The only slip up was the Liza Minelli joke that you mentioned. I thought ordering pizza was hilarious and the actors and actresses seemed to be into it. Her outfit changes getting more and more outrageous was a great way to work in something funny without having to make a joke.

Maybe it helped that I was watching with a significant delay so I could fast forward a lot. I pretty much just watched Ellen and the presenters and then fast forwarded through all the reading of nominees and people I don't recognize giving acceptance speeches and people signing. So, I blew through it pretty fast. Maybe that was the key to enjoying it.

Maybe I'm getting senile in my old age, but I used to watch just for the fun of watching the clips and snippets of the different perfs. For me, it's fun. You guys don't see it that way, well, to each his own.

Ellen is not horrible, but I would like to see someone with a little pizzazz sing and dance their way across the stage (a la Billy Crystal/Hugh Jackman) and really rev up the festivities. Call me old fashioned, but that's me. Ever since I was a kid, I watch. It's like an old dying tradition with me. Some people watch paint dry, I watch the Oscars. It doesn't solve the problems of the world, but I have my little foibles.

I enjoy watching good and great movies that take me on a journey. I enjoy the craft of storytelling on film, then I indulge in a little harmless comparing of notes. And yes, I was bored.

Bring back Firefly and Serenity
