Warning, it has veiled clues to the plot in it, so if you'd rather not know, look away now...

"I didn’t hate Avengers: Age of Ultron, but I did hate that I didn’t like it all that much even though there was indeed blood, sweat, and tears from all involved in its creation. There are moments of wit and a few rich character beats (avoid the clips like the plague), but there are diamonds in the rough. This seemingly all-important chapter feels like a stop-gap, an intermission from a filmmaker who doesn’t want to be here and a company that would rather just move on to the next big movie. I just desperately wanted it to be alive."

In the comic book Age of Ultron, the Avengers defeated Ultron two times!
www.amazon.com/Age-Ultron-Brian-Michael-Bendis/dp/078515566X

Ultron's first defeat was an annihilation so complete that Ultron never even existed. That was too much because the Avengers needed Ultron as a sparring partner to develop their skills for fighting enemies worse than Ultron. The second time the Avengers stop Ultron, they use a time machine to defeat Ultron with more finesse and a whole lot less stomping of his shiny metal ass.

My late mother got that not long after Gilda Radnor died from it, it isn't what she died from but when a woman gets that form of cancer the odds are against her. Glad Cobie beat it.

91 is very nice for Cabin in the Woods, but it is being sued over copyright infringement, and Joss only wrote half of it and directed none of it. Shakespeare can take some credit away from Joss for the writing of Much Ado. Serenity is all Joss, all the way. Avengers #1 is mostly Joss and a great deal of Marvel. Avengers #2 is even more Marvel, because they published the Age of Ultron comic just before Joss wrote Avengers Age of Ultron, even if Joss paid no attention to that comic, Marvel paid attention.

Metacritic isn't the same as Rotten Tomatoes, it's more consistent from movie to movie.

Metacritic gives Avengers #2 a higher score than Avengers #1 while Rotten Tomatoes gives Avengers #2 a much lower score than Avengers #1. I bet Metacritic has the correct ranking and Rotten Tomatoes does not because I looked at how other Joss Whedon movies were ranked.

Rotten Tomatoes gives 91 to Cabin in the Woods versus 82 for Serenity. Cabin in the Woods is not the better movie in my opinion, even if Rotten Tomatoes disagrees.

Metacritic gives 72 to Cabin in the Woods versus 74 for Serenity, with the higher score to the better movie. That is consistency. Metacritic is better than Rotten Tomatoes at calculating the consensus of critics' opinions about movies. www.metacritic.com/about-metascores

Metacritic heard of your complaint and immediately gave Hero (2002) an 84 www.metacritic.com/movie/hero

The Internet Movie database www.imdb.com uses metacritic for films after 1999 when metacritic started. The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997) came out two years too long ago.

Metacritic does not inflate the scores. It only keeps track of what critics are saying. It is not the final and absolute arbiter of tasteful cinema. A score of 61 – 80 means “Generally Favorable Reviews” and 81 – 100 means “Universal Acclaim”.

I'll give you an example of great movie and a movie with “mixed” reviews.
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope is 91 www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-iv---a-new-hope
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is 51 www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-i---the-phantom-menace

That would explain why Hero(1992) was not listed. Others I often use for validation are not going to be there either.

Knowing that it uses critics helps understand why it will be wrong so often.

It is not wrong. The metacritic critics from around the whole wide world like Avengers 2 more than Avengers 1 and so #2 is selling more tickets than #1 did.

On the other hand, Rotten Tomatoes has got it wrong with its reviews of Avengers #2 rated lower, and sinking fast, compared to Avengers #1.

Avengers 2 Dominated (Almost) Every Country This Weekend

Joss Whedon’s Avengers 2 has been dominating the foreign box office, winning all 26 of the markets in which it opened so far.

Avengers: Age of Ultron ended the weekend with $201 million total, earning the top spot in all 44 territories in which it opened, surpassing the already high expectations. The IMAX returns are the largest non-China international opening of all time with $10.4 million. Breaking records and taking no prisoners, the $279 million blockbuster held a 96 percent market share in Korea, 79 percent in Australia, 75 percent in Germany, and 91 percent in Russia. Collectively, it made $44.8 million in two days, 40 percent more than the first Avengers. – www.vulture.com/2015/04/avengers-2-dominated-almost-every-country.html

I meant wrong in the sense of critical review, not as predictor of Box Office revenue.
Once upon a time, movie reviews were intended to help moviegoers decide which film to see, or if they would see a film - if it was worth it.

It sounds like Ultron will not overtake Avengers at the Box Office.
Is Avengers still the record holder? Has no other overtaken it?

Avengers holds the record for biggest opening weekend, but overall it is the third highest money-maker behind Avatar and Titanic.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” took China by storm this week, scoring the country’s second highest-grossing debut in history.

The superhero sequel has made $156.3 million in its first six days in the People’s Republic, behind only “Furious 7” when it comes to China openings. Those big numbers pushed “Avengers: Age of Ultron’s” global total to $1.1 billion, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of all time.

The film topped foreign charts again, pulling in $185 million from overseas territories in its fourth week of international release.

There is another movie with more substance than Ultron that also has a robot as the central character. Ex Machina is considered to have “substance” if you believe metacritic www.metacritic.com/movie/ex-machina
or Film Critic Hulk
http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/05/11/film-crit-hulk-smash-ex-machina

But, and it is a big butt, Ex Machina sold only $29,048,268 in tickets. www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=exmachina.htm

In the world you live in, substance loses to flashy, trashy movies. See for example Furious 7, which sold worldwide $1,488,800,000 in tickets. www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fast7.htm

Some of my thinking was incorrect, some of the foreshadowing is herring. Also the most nekkidness I've seen in cinema this year.
