Ok. I hate movie theaters with a passion and have not gone to see anything for some time. fortunately I love Firefly more than I hate a cramped seat and I wanted to support the movie! So I took my girlfriend out to dinner and to the theater to see the much anticipated "Serenity". Well, it was much anticipated for me :)

For starters the theater manager had a raffle based off your ticket for a free Serenity t-shirt ( I didnt win Gor'ram it!) which was pretty shiny. There were 10 people in the theater and 9 of them were fans (I heard them all having similar conversations, yes I am nosy and listened to every word) the non-fan as you may have surmised was my girlfriend. She is usually a good sport about the odd-ball things I want to see and put up no resistance to going to Serenity (hell she hadnt been to a theater since 03 ;) ).

The movie was perfect for fans. I did not see any major change from the original series other than Books hair and limited roll. The dialog was right on track, acting was great, and the story was good. There were a few lulls in the movie that seemed to make it drag, I am trying to think exactly what it was but I cant put my finger on it. I think those spots are mostly recaps and revisits of things you would have known from the series. Just little spots where your like "get on with it".

I have to admit I was disappointed with the movie. I got more of a "this is it this is how it ends" feeling than a "here is where we are going". It seemed more like a FOX series finally than a big budget holywood movie. To me it gave the series closure, which is NOT what I was looking for I was looking for a kickoff into what the future may hold. I was looking for edge of your seat big movie attraction and it just felt like a "made for TV" movie :(

Now for the even more dis pointing fact, the girlfriend didnt like it. She did like the few episodes of the Series she watched with me but she thought the movie was long and boring. She liked the characters (Including the fact the same actors played them as the series) and she laughed more than a few times right on cue. She was just as shocked as the rest of us when Walsh was skewered, but she wasnt into it as much as a fan would be.

In closing I think I am going to have to say as a stand-alone movie Serenity is a flop. As a series finally for Firefly it is good. So from my seat for Universal and Firefly fans it is not going to be a box office smash and doesnt give me the impression it is going to relaunch anything. Much to my disappointment.

America loves a winner!

Some of your points I can agree with, others..not so much. After having seen the BDM 3 times, and seeing how audiences react, I think it'll do ok. Granted, it's not what many had hoped for, and I don't think anyone expected to see 2 of the crew die, even one would have been tough. And having explained both River and the Reaver secrets in the 1st movie was a bold move to start off with.

There are 30 more planets and moons in the 'verse where our BDHs can find trouble in. I have to think that Joss knew going in that he'd have to bring us more than just River's secrets for 3 movies. Hopefully he'll get his wish.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

You're right on the money dude, I couldn't agree more. I know when both Book and Wash(especialy Wash) died my mouth just dropped open and I couldn't choke out a word. They died in a true Joss Whedon fashion though, sudden and not a lot of time spent mourning. Then at the end I had a horrible feeling because I was hoping for a glimpse of what the future holds too, not "this is how it ends." I've heard rumors of a couple more movies after this one...but how?

I went in expecting a new beginning. I thought this was going to relaunch the crew and ship (pun intended) into a new direction.

What I got was an ending of sorts. I was shocked and awed, and thought it was pretty wonderful.

So why was it done like this? If you want my guess, it's because Joss didn't want this taken away from him again. Say he made a transitional film, but it doesn't make a lot of money. Now he's in the same place again, with this great ship and nowhere to fly it. I think, this time, he wanted to make sure that his vision was realized.

There is room for a sequel, but not, perhaps, following the River plot. Serenity's still flying. That ain't much, but it's enough.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Joss has said all along that what he cared about was this film, because no sequel(s) are guaranteed. He had to make it as dramatic as possible, and a stand-alone film, just in case he did not get the chance to continue the story. Even if we don't get more films (but I'll bet we do) Firefly/Serenity could continue in novels, comics, or possibly even shadow-puppet theater.
