SPEAKINGSHIT

(Warning: Coarse Language) Podcast episode with a great discussion about how Firefly/Serenity compares to Star Trek, Battlestar, Babylon 5 and Star Wars (whole episode is on this topic) - Could Joss save Star Trek?

MONKSDAD

Joss could save star trek, if he decided to scrap the whole star trek idea and rename it firefly.

"And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community."

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Star Trek isn't in need of saving. Star Trek is in need of getting the people who write the books to write the TV shows.

Currently reading: Star Trek Titan: Orion's Hounds --everything Star Trek should be.

Joss isn't the solution, he's the antidote.

Star Trek was so creatively bankrupt by the time of Voyager that writers were turning up at pitch meetings, sometimes bustling with ideas, only for the producers to be sat there with (I kid you not) a copy of Halliwell's Film Guide and a suggestion that the writers should go through the book and find films that could be adapted into episodes.

In any case, JJ Abrams's first project at Paramount will be a revival of Star Trek - who knows what form it will take though.

Dismissing Star Trek as bankrupt (even the core idea) is short sighted and biased. In the right hands and with the right re-imaginging it could be very successful - and deserves to be.

The podcast isn't all about that anyway - we rip right into Star Trek and praise Firefly for the reasons you have given pretty much
