This is a question for all of the writers out there.

What music do you listen to while you're writing?

List your top five favorites to write by.

1) Creed
2) Fall Out Boy
3) 3 Days Grace
4) Nirvana
5) Seether

Let us all know. Maybe we can get as inspired as you :)

That is an interesting question. I wonder if the type of music influences the storyline?

Writing for me has three stages:

1) Plotting beforehand / pure thinking.
2) Actually writing, with pen and paper.
3) Typing up afterwards.

The three are subjectively very different to me, so tend to have different soundtracks, as follows:

1) Rock/metal - top five would probably be Nightwish, Meat Loaf, Live, Scorpions and Queen.

2) Celtic all the way - if I had to mention only five bands/artists they'd be Runrig, Secret Garden, Clannad, Capercaillie and Loreena McKennitt.

3) Whatever's on, to be honest; anything from pop to classical, so long as it has a tune. I only get picky when I'm doing a detailed edit or on the very rare occasions when I'm typing an additional part straight onto computer, when I revert to Celtic or something classical that stays within a near-constant volume range most of the time. Verdi's Requiem, for instance, is right out.

I like to get inspired by music on the Firefly soundtrack. Listening to the musical cues helps me map the scene in my head as though I were watching it played out on the screen. Then I can sit down and write it, and it usually comes out pretty true. I've used everything from the Bar Fight cue from "The Train Job" to the funeral music from "The Message". I think the scenes I've 'written to the music', as it were, have been some of my best ones.

I have the Serenity Soundtrack and sometimes I use that as well.

Normaly just turn on my computer hit the play button on my sterio and see what happends. Let the story play out in my mind and type. Never really plan most of it, (You could see that if you've ever read some of my work) but sometimes the music just hits the spot you know? Sets the mood.

I basicall just click through my MP3/fanvid collection, looking for stuff that fits whatever scene I'm writing.
