I just noticed that Zoe's maiden name is Alleyne, which sounds a lot like "allein", the German word for "alone". Is that just a coincidence?

Ha! Interesting!

Character names have a weird way of making sense in the Jossverse. My personal favourite is Willow. The name comes from the tree, obviously, but it also comes from the same root that became the words Wicca and Witch. It's also known as "the tree of death." Given that Willow's full path wasn't decided until around the second season (it's believed to be about then that Joss starting planning the Buffy dies / Willow the witch resurrects her arc) it's really cool that she wound up with that name!

I don't think that Alleyne is pronounced anything like "allein", so... no relatiion. :)

But indeed, in particular first names tend have a very specific and, no doubt, intentional meaning pertaining to the character in all the Jossverse. :)

A quick and sloppy google found me this:

"Derived, according to Julius Scaliger, from the Sclavonic Aland, a wolf-dog, a hound, and Chaucer uses Aland in the same sense. Bailey derives it as the same from the British. Camden thinks it a corruption of Ælianus, which signifies sun-bright. From the same we have Allen, Allin, **Alleyne**. In the Gaelic, Aluinn signifies exceedingly fair, handsome, elegant, lovely; Irish, Alun, fair, beautiful."

Zoe doesn't look very Irish to me.
