I went and did it this weekend. I ordered a Sony 350 Blu-ray player from Amazon Friday (I got it for $214! and I didn't have to battle the Black Friday crowds). I couldn't stand not being able to see Firefly in Blu-Ray and Serenity when it comes out.

I've already gotten "300" and pre-ordered "The Dark Knight" and have "Iron Man" and "Wall-E" (thanks to Leo Laport's very geeky, tech oriented weekend radio program on XM)on my wish list. What other movies are worth the extra credits for a Blu-Ray version?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I have a non-SF film to recommend, one that I have on regular dvd but will probably upgrade to Blu-Ray soon, since I took the plunge and ordered a PS3 today.

Across the Universe - the music of The Beatles is utilized to underscore the lives and loves of a group of people who end up together in New York in the 1960s. It is visually dazzling, and I am sure the superior sound of Blu-Ray will also be incredible. I love this movie!

Sounds like a good movie. I just added it to my Netflix queue.

I'm envious of your PS3. That's what my daughter really wanted but I couldn't justify it with a Wii, XBox 360 and PS2 all attached to various TV's in the house.

Netflix does rent movies in Blu-Ray (and streams SD movies from the XBox. It's pretty cool, can't wait until they start Blu-Ray streaming). Blu-Ray DVDs only costs an extra $1 a month. I think it's well worth the money.

I too enjoy Net-Flix. And streaming eps to your computer is included in the monthly payment.
For movies, I am totally blown away by The Fountain, or any of the Pixar releases like Ratatouille or Wall-E. Be aware tho that older movies, like The Godfather (which I just saw), and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, still have "film grain" and will not be as sharp as newer movies. However, if you have a decent sound system, the Blu-ray disc will add an extra dimension with surround sound, especially DTS surround.

Everyone dies alone.

Hey Guys,

I'm glad that you gave me the heads-up about Across the Universe. I'm a big beatles fan and I've heard good things about it, just needed an extra recommendation to give me the final push to see it.

I think I'll rent it this weekend. I too made the final plunge into a PS3 and it is amazing. I only saw about 10 minutes of HP: Order of the Phoenix but it looks amazing and the sound is, well.....amazing!

I have one other movie to recommend in Sci-fi genere and that's Stargate. It doesn't knock your socks off but I've always enjoyed this movie since I saw it back in the day. I also ordered T2: Judgement Day (for me the best of all the Terminator movies to date). BTW has anyone heard any buzz about the new Terminator: Salvation? It stars Christian Bale as John Connor, but I hvaen't heard much else about it.

I also ordered the Blu-Ray FF Series from Amazon (best price yet out there $45). I'm getting it Wednesday - I'm like a little girl waiting for a new dolly. I also ordered the Batman movies (okay I went a little nuts) but I saw a few minutes of Batman Begins in a Best Buy store that had the Blu-Ray set up and I said to myself - "I gotta get me one of these." Expecting a bonus for the year so I'm good to go. I'm set for the winter.

"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." Casablanca, 1942

Believe it or not, "Casablanca" is coming out on Blu-Ray. Saw the promo on the 5 p.m. news. I wonder how it'll look in B&W and Blu-Ray.

I saw about 5 minutes of "Iron Man" on Blu-Ray in Best Buy and that's what convinced me that I had to have one once I got a HDTV. I can't wait for it to show up in the next few days.

BTW I saw "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" last night on a regular DVD and it was outstanding in both acting and photography (just love the leap from the cliff into the river) I hope that one day it'll come out on Blu-Ray. It'll be beyond awesome.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of my all-time favs (Casablanca as well. Casablanca on Blu-Ray in B&W, I don't know about that one). The Cliff jump scene is one of many in th film that's great.

There's the train-robbing scene (well both of them) and the "knife fight" scene. "Really, Harvey thought of that?"

The only other duo that comes close to the camaraderie is Zoe and the Captain. OK maybe it's a stretch, but do you see why I love westerns so.

Glad you were able to see a piece of history - Redford and Newman - doesn't get any better.
"Swim!, the fall alone will kill ya'"
"Manos arriba!" "They've got em up, skip on down."

Classic!

Speaking of classic: Serenity BDM on Sci-Fi Channel Saturday Jan. 3, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. 1st Time on Broadcast Cable.

I could so see Mal pulling Zoe over the cliff. And was it just me or did the bit with the train guard remind you of the vault scene in "Serenity"?

Seeing "Serenity" Thursday night on the big screen in Raleigh, NC with a whole gaggle of Browncoats. It's part of the Colony theater's "Cool Classics" series. I can't wait!

Hey ncBC,

We are on the same wave:

"I could so see Mal pulling Zoe over the cliff."

This is what I'm saying isall (this is all Chrisisall's fault).

And was it just me or did the bit with the train guard remind you of the vault scene in "Serenity"?

Was this Joss' way of paying homage to the classic western movies, such as Butch & SunDance? Hmmmmm!
It would not surprise me.

BTW enjoy yourself at the BDS (Big Damn Screening)
