I'm eagerly awaiting its beginning in Australia. I hope it's as good as Band of Brothers.

Got HBO just for this (and TrueBlood).
Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, now this... could be one of the greatest film collections ever produced.
Now I will go back to lowering my expectations.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I was in BestBuy the other day and saw what I think was a promo for this on all the HD monitors. Not sure, since if there were any credits or an HBO tag I missed it, but if the footage I saw is from The Pacific it's gonna blow you away. I don't have HBO so I'll have to wait for the DVD release (or not )

Thing about this genre and especially this series of films is how it really does glorify war. I find myself being completely drawn to them, and wanting more ("I hope this same production team takes on WWI), fascinated by every battle scene, and at the same time wondering if they only perpetuate *especially* male desire to go to war and fight the good fight, which is of course whatever someone in authority tells you it is.

Most of the time though I watched in awe of both the filmmakers and the people that fought those battles, whatever their motivations.

I havn't watched the Pacific yet, but I loved Band of Brothers. I don't know that I'd agree that it glorifies the war - BoB and Private Ryan both made the whole exercise seem pretty horrific and hellish to me. I think it did glorify the men themselves, but I see that as a separate notion.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

You may be immune to the Trial by Fire test that many young men seem drawn to. Testing oneself when the stakes are the highest for some are the only tests worth taking, or the thing that draws them - "hanging oneself over the edge of a volcano and finding out what you're made of" kind of thing.

Sure, they don't pull their punches on the brutality of war, far from it, and it's even become a cliche to have a young soldier basically look into the camera and say something along the lines of, "this isn't as much fun as I thought it would be... in fact it's pure hell," but try as they might to moralize, the warning just makes the dare that much more enticing.

The greater the personal risk, the greater the Glory - just ask Wulfenstar.

The opening episode was a good start, pretty sure i'm going to enjoy the series.

I dont see this or Ban of Brothers as glorifying war personally, rather quite the opposite, these shows show the horror, the insanity and the humanity of war, none of which glorify war imo. I can appreciate what these guys had to go through and what they accomplished but I certainly wouldnt like to experience it.

No HBO, so I'll be waiting for the DVD/Blu-Ray to become available. But I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Wowzer - I spoke too soon, apparently. I was looking on my on-demand channels, and checking the HD Showcase On Demand (because my local NBC affiliate's HD channel has been out since before the Olympics!), and anyway, long story longer, etc...

... So I see a category on the HD Showcase called "HBO The Pacific" and decide to watch a couple of the trailers. Then I see, "The Pacific Ep 1 - 55 min. run time". And it's free. So yeah, of course I watched it.

WOW. Intense probably isn't a strong enough word for some of the scenes, and it's just starting.

Oh, and nice to see Jaye from Wonderfalls on my screen again! :)

I don't know how much of it they'll show this way, or if they're just being teases (which I suspect), but I'm in for whatever I can get. And yes, I'll definitely be buying it.
