I'll just assume that most of you are familiar with the bit of televised greatness that was The Muppet Show (a.k.a. the first and last good Reality show). They had a sketch they used to do called "Pigs in Space," a send up of Star Trek, Star Wars, and any other SF that crossed their path (in the 90s, the short-lived Muppets Tonight updated it to "Pigs in Space: Deep Dish Nine").

One of the quotes that comes across the tops of the pages around here has Tim Minear (IIRC) relaying a Joss comment from before Firefly hit the screen --"something about a crew composed entirely of pigs." That's what got me thinking. . .

I don't have enough pigs to go around, sadly, but I'll make do.

Kermit the Frog as Mal. Hardworking, earnest, cheerful, and with a silly sense of humour.

Miss Piggy as Inara. Classy, elegant, somewhat snobby, and more than willing to kick your ass if you get in her way. Would've been funny to see Early as a Muppet Show guest --only to get taken out by one "pork chop."

I can just see Link Hogthrob (big, heroic-looking blockhead) showing up dressed like Mal, asuming he's Mal, and trying to act like Mal. . . and end up as Jayne.

Only Gonzo could be Wash --not just for the Hawaiian shirts and wackiness, but because Gonzo would no doubt think that juggling geese would make a great act (I can just see his wide-eyed "That's brilliant!" expression)!

Zoe would have to be Camilla then, and the surreality of casting a (litteral) chicken as badass Zoe would be a typically Muppet move.

Kaylee is problemattical. The best match I can come up with is Mary Sue, the young, blonde, perky, pig girl who is alternately Piggy's protegé and competition.

Clifford (from the Jim Henson Hour and Muppets Tonight) would make a good Book, with his smooth coolness and mix of competence and pratfalls.

Part of me wants to cast Rowlf as Simon, just for the chance to see him doing a "Veterinarian's Hospital" sketch in Serenity's medbay (with Mal's intercom-voice as the announcer).

River could be Janice, the perpetually spaced-out guitar-player, who also co-stars with Rowlf on "Vets Hospital."

As for guest characters:

Niska would best be played by Dr. Strangepork --who already has the glasses and a similar accent.

Gonzo's pal Rizzo would make an excellent Badger (or "Rat," in this case ). I can just see him going into one of his histrionic fits when Mal inevitably sets him off.

Statler & Waldorf would be Bluehands. Instead of brain-melting people, they heckle them mercilessly. (And they travel around in an Alliance warship with a big theatre-box sticking out of one of the towers.)

Animal would make an excellent Reaver. Though now I want to see a Reaver chasing Zoe around the ship, yelling "WOMAN! WOMAN! WOMAN! . . ."

The iconic old man, sitting on a porch with a guitar and singing the Ballad of Serenity would be Floyd, the spaced-out Electric Teeth guitarist. I would include the whole band (perhaps doing a hard rock version of the theme), but the only one left unnassigned is Zoot. Though, having him accompany Floyd with nothing more than occasional one-note saxophone blats would be funny. . .

Scooter could be Bester, spending too much time running get-rich-quick schemes to fix the engines.

Pépé could be Niska's second thug (the one after Crow gets puréed). Pépé's own ass is sacred to him, I can imagine him watching Crow buy it and immediately turning to Mal and sympathizing.

The nearest I can find to Early is Dr. Teeth, with his non-sequiturish philosophical observations, and grammatically stilted syntax (or syntactically stilted grammar).

Sadly, I can't think of any way to add Fozzie, except perhaps as the Fed on Ariel, in his Patrol Bear character --heck, make the entire Ariel security force out of bears (like Boris, the Muppets Tonight security guard).

Priceless. Very funny. I'll be giggling over the idea of Piggy as Inara all day, to say nothing of Statler and Waldorf with blue hands, heckling their way across the 'verse.

As for Fonzie, perhaps he could play the mail-man in The Message?

*giggling and rolling around on the floor over the genius post* That is the funniest post I have read in a long long time. I hope firefly gets so popular that they actually do that someday. That would be one of the funniest things ever!

Thanks for the props.

As I was doing it, I kept hearing Zoe's lines redubbed for Camilla.

Quote:

"Which one of 'em you figure tracked us?"
"Buck-awk, bawk"
*beat*
"Could you be more specific?"

Quote:

"Anybody starts looking around, just, I don't know, shoot them."
"Buck-awk?"
"Politely."
"Cawwww."

Okay, okay ... you won me over on casting Camilla for Zoe. So much potential. *blink*

I was actually picturing Sam the Eagle showing up, acting like Mal, thinking he was cast as Mal ... but really being Jayne. It's the gruff personality they both have. And there would be such a great over-joke with Sam being so eloquent and intelligent, but having to say lines from a rough-and-poorly-educated perspective.

Can we put Fozzie in a wig as Kaylee? Fozzie is so irrepressibly cheerful ....

I think I have a better Simon and River combo for you though. The Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beeker.

LUPINADDAMS

Cybersnark, you are a sick and twisted individual and it is a pleasure to know you.

I can't get the image out of my head of this cast doing the final scene of 'War Stories'...
