Didn't see this posted, so I have to ask..when did Tim Minear know that WF was going to be cancelled. Was it before they shot Caged Bird? Cause the similarities between that ending and The Message are ....well, intentional ?

Jewels last scene in WF struck me w/ deja vu.

Both scenes are outside.
.... and it's snowing.

She's being comforted by a tall,dark and handsome guy....(Simon/ Eric )

Both episodes are the finale for the series.

Now granted, Jewel isn't in THE last scene of WF, but for her part, it seemed like a fitting end.

I just finished w/ the WF dvds, and I'm all nostalgic and such. Mabye that's it.

I think you're reaching, although it's a nice thought.

One, The Message is not the last episode, Objects in space is (TM is the third to last). Two, The Message was never aired in the U.S. on TV.

But besides the 'I think you're reaching bit' and the comparison of final episodes bit... ideas commonly find themselves translated/reincarnated differenlty in various instances.

Dammit. I hate being this wrong. And hell yes, I was reaching. I knew that.

Well, in my world, The Message was Firefly's last episode..cause it so represented the death of the show. The others eps will just have to come before it.

heh heh.

I grant you that The Message was the ep they filmed (wasn't it the final ep they filmed? The one they wrapped on?) where Greg Edmondson composed the final score as a goodbye to the show?

It keeps amazing me that it seems I agree with everything you post except about politics, AURaptor!

If Firefly had been allowed to run for all thirteen episodes before being pulled, Objects In Space would have been a perfect ending, with the shakeup of the crew structure during Jubal's "visit", and the reconcilliation of River and Kaylee. In fact, even the way things did work out, OIS was a good ending. At least F*x advertised the episode "Serenity" as being the beginning, while broadcasting it last.

But The Message was being filmed when they all found out the show was dead. And the score for the final scene in the snow is so simple, pure and heart-rending that I get chills just remembering it. From the commentaries on the DVDs we all know that THAT is the end of the show. It echoes our feelings about losing something we all loved, and still love. Knowing how much our BDHs loved their show, and watching them in that scene, knowing that they also knew that it was the end as they filmed it.... leaves me more than a little bit weepy, every time.

And yes, AURaptor, you are reaching a bit . Even though the snow in the last "Wonderfalls" is also very pretty.

JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Is it too late for a do over? I have no clue why I started this thread.

From things that he has said in interviews, he knew they wouldn't last long as soon as they were scheduled for Friday nights. But, all of the Wonderfalls episodes had completed filming before the first one aired, since they were delayed to a mid-season debut.

IIRC Tim Minear knew they were in trouble even before that, or at least he didn't want to assume they'd be picked up again after what happened to Firefly. So, right from the start, the writers designed the first season to be a complete story even though they were foreshadowing subsequent seasons' story arcs "just in case". Very good, clearheaded thinking on the part of Tim and the writers - they knew who they were dealing with.
