oooh I have something to ponder. My mom keeps insisting that dressing in a suit or the like would be better for me. She thinks it would make the kids respond to me as an authority figure. I say if my authority depends on my outfit, I'm in trouble and that wearing jeans and tee shirts or my semi goth stuff works just fine...what do you all think??

Honestly what I have found with my favorite teachers is not what they wear but how they interact with me.

I think that most students are the same. If they are treated with repect of at the very least an actual person it should not matter what you wear.

I don't think you have to worry about how they are responding to you MSG. They obviously think you ar egreat. Why else would they have singled you out to Hula yesterday?

All around NO. I think a suit would be less comfortable and make you more cranky. It would give the kids the impression that you're stuffy. And as far as I've heard you don't even have a problem with authority.

Questions:

1. Which department do you shop in at the store? Juniors, or career or women's/petites?

If the answer is mostly junior...maybe switch to career and find the "edgier" stuff there...at least for work clothes. At a certain point the stuff in Juniors just becomes to juvenile.

2. Do you have "work" clothes and "not-at-work" clothes or are they all one in the same?

If you would wear it out on a Friday night, probably not work appropriate. If you would wear it lounging around the house on a Saturday afternoon, probably not work appropriate.

3. Do you think your parents/friends might nominate you for "What Not to Wear"...and that somewhere deep down inside you know they would be right?

I secretly wish my friends would do this to me. I really, really want a $5k shopping spree in New York and the permission to spend $150 on a pair of pants instead of my usual $20.

But that doesn't mean losing your personal style. You can still do semi-goth but with a more professional spin.

And remember, you are teaching your students how to present themselves in the workplace. They will watch you for clues.

When I taught it was always slacks and a nice top/sweater with oxford type shoes...no sneakers/jeans/t-shirts. I was comfortable, not super dressed-up, but casually professional. I would've fit into a casual office environment just fine.

I'm obviously pretty conservative about work wardrobe...but I work in a VERY conservative setting. I should wear suits to work, but I won't spend the money on them. Instead, it's slacks and dressy tops (except on Friday when it's dark-wash jeans and a nice top). I do feel that if I dressed the part, the owners would take me more seriously...but they also think we should come in early and stay late...but according to company rules, we aren't allowed to and get in trouble if we do.

(Have you ever seen the movie "Picture Perfect"? I always think of that when I think about dressing for the job you want. JA's style in the beginning of that movie was cute, but just not work appropriate. She stepped it up a notch (or down) and it was so much better.)

Rugbug- cool a list. OK
1- mostly I shop at Marks and Spencer or Old Navy so they don't really have departments
2- definitely. I have lots of stuff that I would never wear at school. I am especially careful of this as I teach teenage boys
3- Not really I pretty much dress better than most of my friends ( not sure what that says about my friends

I do wear things like a black turtleneck sweater with a plaid mini and high heeled boots, but the skirt's only 3 inches above the knee :)

Typical outfit for me would be this

Sometimes I wear skirts and such ( this is my fav) Though the top I wear is similar it has cap sleeves

I wouldn't suggest a $5000 suit shopping spree. But don't dress sloppy. Don't dress like you don't care about your appearance - the attitude gets communicated to the kids. When you are dressing, ask yourself if the selection that you pick shows that you care about what you are doing. (Not "care about job" but care about the things that you are doing.)

I would recommend "The Four Agreements" if you get a chance to read. There is a bit of wisdom in that book. Wisdom that you can pass along to your students. Small book, easy reading.

Ah here it is...best way to describe/show what I look like at school. I didn't photobucket a pic of me wearing it, but it's my sis wearing my jacket ( yes I'm still on about her "borrowing" it for 3 weeks )so this gives you a really good idea of what I wear at school...Obviously the person in jeans and a jacket not the Easter dress

Well, I think those pictures show appropriate casual workplace clothing.

I'm not too sure about the 4" knee high boots (although there is a wide range of 4" boots, from fairly tame to street corner wear) and a skirt 3" above the knee.

You're fairly petite (aka, short) right? Three inches above your knee is pretty short in the grand scheme of things. I do remember you saying that you wear tights often, which I think would make the short skirts not seem quite so sexy.

But in the grand scheme of things...if you're kids aren't distracted and your principal thinks you dress appropriately, then who cares what anybody else says? It's not like your going to advance in your career based on much else than education and years of service. :)

Edited to add: Oh, that outfit is great for teaching. I might pair it with slacks instead of jeans, but it's totally appropriate, IMO.

Hugs Rugbug... yup short means short skirts just look cute not sexy and the boots are pretty tame, just high heeled ( look almost like dressage boots)
yeah my mom has that southern women thing going where everyone should wear upper management business clothes all day every day...or really pretty dresses ( for the women)

My main point in dressing down a bit is the kids. Since they are really low income and the majority are from another country, I've found it's best not to go too far up the dressy ladder as that is often seen as insulting. They tend to take it as you are not approachable or that you think you're so great.

There isn't anything in the book that isn't new or that you couldn't work out yourself. And the writing has little depth.

The positive for the book is that it is clear. It is easy to remember the four items. And if you remember them, you apply them.
