There are a lot of threads out right now full of hate and resentment. This is a thread for happy, bouncy, kaylee type thoughts and discusions. So to start......

I'v always woundered why the people on firefly don't have pets. I mean Anara seems just the type for a nice lil cat. What do yall think?

If you play Nationstates.net check out the region Firefly.

I can see why Inara doesn’t have a pet. One of her clients might be allergic to animal fur. But they (the crew) could have fish, or a ferret. Then again, hamsters is nice

Excellent idea (this thread I mean)

I think the times are just too rough and pets are a luxory they can't afford in the 'verse. Besides, pets can be unpredictable and therefore are a potential risk for the business.

IF they had pets, I think it would look like this:

Kaylee: big fluffy dog
Jayne: ugly but cute rat
inara: black elegant cat
Book: turtle
Mal: parrot
Zoe/Wash: pet ducks
River/Simon: ant colony in a terrarium

I don't see having pets on Serenity. I just don't think it would be healthy for the animal, 'cept maybe a hamster. And you know if they had a hamster, Jayne would eat it the second they were down to protien bars.

Ooooh! Sorry! That wasn't a very happy thought!

In the 'verse, resources are scarce. Feeding and arming the crew has to come before a luxury such as a pet.

I also see Mal as kind of like my father was. He needs to be manly, and prickly, and showing love for an animal isn't manly. I can see him complaining and bitchin' about River and Kaylee having a kitten and telling them to keep it out of the common areas, etc. And then the second everyone is asleep picking it up and petting it.

Oh, you sparked my imagination! I can definitely see a lot of reasons why they wouldn't have pets (what aniamls did they bring from Earth That Was?), but it's fun to think about.

I would love a story where Jayne gets a ferret. I have several ferrets (yes, how did you guess?) and they are terribly naughty little thieves. Jayne seems to have a hidden love for cute fuzzy things (judging by "Dead or Alive," and his hat) and he knows all about theiving. I think a ferret would appeal to him. He could sneak it onboard, knowing Mal would definitely not approve, and keep it in his room. Then he would start acting suspicious, stealing food, and the crew would get nervous. Maybe there would be some little thefts as the ferret roams the ship through the ductwork.

Eventually Janye would show the ferret to Kaylee. Perhaps she catches him or something upsetting happens and he feels bad for her. Kaylee would adore it! I'm sure Jayne knows a cute pet would get Kaylee's attention. At some point the ferret would have to escape, as all ferrets do, and Mal would find out. He would let out a less-than-manly squeal and all hell would break lose. Everyone would be involved in the big arguement and you would see each person's reaction to both the creature and the fact that JAYNE brought a pet onboard. Mal would insist Janye get rid of it at the next stop, but when no one's looking, Mal would give the ferret a treat.

Sorry that got long, but it's all Bowie's fault!

That was such a good story! I can just picture the whole thing!

The problem with pets is that they chew on things, and a cute and fluffy something eating the wiring or what not could be bad. Don't they have enough troubles on that ship?

*grin* I can totally see this happening.

And I have to admit, on the episodes with the cattle in the hold, I kept thinking, "Ya know, they could use a couple of Australian shepherds to make that job a LOT easier!" (guess what I have, in addition to sled dogs)

Mal grew up on a ranch, chances are he has a pretty utilitarian view of animals....you know, don't name the cows or we can't eat them!

Okay, this is getting out of hand. Mom just came into the room and asked about the big goofy grin I have.
