Addition of non-canon material to Firefly reference database?

I'm currently working on bringing up the Firefly reference we once had on here at FFF.NET and was wondering if there is an interest for fanfic writers to add characters and items from their stories into the reference database.

I know it's not canon, but if a field was added to the database to differentiate between canon and non-canon entries, then the existing Firefly universe can be expanded upon so that writers will have a richer universe from which they can draw inspiration from.

What do you think? Any interests?

Well, maybe... I imagine some others would want their OCs included, but I wouldn't want any of mine. They're relatively insignificant anyway.

Some people have some excellent ideas about settings though, I've been inspired myself by some of them and given some nods.

Maybe a speculative category would be good also?

Not sure if it fits in with your concept, but I've made some posts about travel, navigation, duration in the verse, and how they integrate with the timeline of Firefly/Serenity.
They are mostly listed in Blue Sun Room in the Writer's Resource Package thread.
If you are interested and have further questions, let me know.
I'm told that some fic writers use them as reference.

Yeah, it does. So instead of having this info in a message thread, they would be organized entries within the reference database.

The idea is that if we take the entire Firefly fanfic collection on this site as a whole and organized its component parts like characters, locations, technologies, and even folklore and things of that nature, we can create an even richer Firefly universe to draw ideas from to discover and write about.

Hopefully, what we end up with down the road is a clear vision of a Firefly universe that's organic, which changes and grows with its fanbase.

Personally I wouldn't want any non-canon stuff in there (I can be a bit of a stickler for things like that with stuff I'm passionate about).
But having said that I can understand why some folks would, especially those who write fanfic.

So if you could have the whole database and then have a way to 'split' it so that peeps like myself can just see the canon stuff then great, go for it. If it was all mixed (even if non-canon stuff was highlighted in some way) then I say no.

Physically, all entries will be in a single database table, but I'll have a field that'll identify the entry as either canon or non-canon, which means onscreen the user will have the option of either viewing only the canon entries (non-canon material will not appear at all), the non-canon entries, or both.

Again, my impetus for doing this is to provide fanfic writers an opportunity to unify the characters, locations, and technologies created within their fanfic into one cohesive whole that their fellow writers can draw from and possibly collaborate together on.

This was just something I thought up while working on the site and saw that there are roughly 13,000 fanfic entries on this site--that's a lot of material. By comparison, there are about 4,500 on FANFICTION.NET.

Many of the fanfic writers who post are very talented and I just think that it would be really cool to have some of the things they came up with cataloged into the database.

The stuff I posted (in thread form) is not fiction, but not what I would claim to be canon - it can be trumped by canon presented by Joss or others. However it is derived from canon, concluded from canon.
You might consider identifying what "level" of canon each item is. Directly canon, appearing in an episode, should have cites of specific source of data. Others might be specified, for instance how would The Map of the Verse be classed, canon, non-canon, derived from canon?
The fanfic would clearly be non-canon.
I wouldn't want anybody to think I claimed my conclusions were canon, and yet nobody should think I made it up of whole cloth.

I just noticed that of these theads, all have more than 1100 views, 2 have over 2,000 views, and another has over 3,200 views.
I don't recall seeing threads with a viewcount that high. Am I forgetting, or have others seen one that high in this site?

Yeah, that's why I was thinking we needed a Speculative category, for stuff that can be backed up and is canon until said otherwise. The work you do is very useful, and I'd like to see it go somewhere in the database.

A few of the threads that PN has posted and where there's been actual discussion that have gotten massive hit counts, probably because PN links to them or because they hit the right keywords for the conspiracy theorist fringes on topical issues. The highest I ever saw was like 14,000 or so. But yeah, those are still high thread counts.

Are those threads in RWED? Or actual FF related threads?

They're RWED, not FF related.
