SILVERSRFR

Hey folks, My name is Mike and I'm a relatively new Browncoat (2006). I am excited and humbled to be here on this site. As all of you know, Fireflyfans.net is relatively famous in the Browncoat world and I'm glad to be a part of history. Thank you for welcoming me and making me feel at home.

From the get-go, I know that most of my ideas are not unique so please bare with me. Just look at them as ramblings of a new Browncoat. I'm happy to say that I'm being broken in quite thoroughly by older members of the community. To them, I say thank you. I'm learning...frustrated at times...but learning nonetheless. Now on that note.

Just an idea, would it be a good idea to be more organized? For example, have an elected council or hierarchy or president that would bring all fan groups and sites together under some more definable leadership.

Benefits would be (obvious to some, not so obvious to others):

-A single or concentrated voice to Joss, the cast, the events, and to Hollywood.
-A liaison to Joss, the cast, the events, and to Hollywood.
-A leader or leaders to better focus our efforts as a group (we are too spread out and our older members are starting to leave).
-A single source of news and updates about the 'verse

Obviously, this person or these persons would be elected every one-two years.

As always, I'm open to opinions and ideas. Thank you for your posts.

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Kinda defeats the purpose of identifying with the Independent Browncoats if we get all organized, don't it?

The Browncoats have already garnered a reputation as being rather vocal and obsessive. Let's not make that any worse by getting all high and mighty with a national club-like mentality.

I disagree with both you and SigmaNunki that the fandom is dying. It may be in a lull right now, but that's happened before, but you have to be well aware that we have been seeing new fans sign on to this board fairly frequently lately, and it will continue to be that way as long as we continue to spread the word. I just think that is best done on a personal level rather than an organized national level.

I agree, Ecgordon. I don't really think it's necessary.

Also, lol liaison to Hollywood. Like they're sitting around going "I wish we knew what those browncoats were thinking".

There are quite a few well respected browncoats who go all out for Firefly/Serenity. I'm happy to have them representing us at conventions and the like. I'm sure if there's anything important going down that they'll get the word out.

Assuming browncoats who stopped coming around are still in fact browncoats and have heard about new materials coming out, I suspect we'll see a jump in activity in June.

Stuff's being worked on, maybe not live action, and some people aren't going to be happy with anything but. Maybe it's barking for table scraps. But it's also important to be supportive especially in regards to the creative input. Artisans and performers are a fragile sort, easily stressed by the demands of their creations. Adding to that stress, by impatience, by the flawed belief that we fans are somehow owed anything, seems like a good way to burn people out and destroy good will. I know people who have been angry at Joss for working on other projects (like Dollhouse), instead of Firefly. You don't have to like his other projects any, but if you want some consideration, you've got to give some consideration. Respect the choices of the people who are involved.

It's gotten to the point that I wince whenever I see someone ask them about Firefly in interviews. It's almost like every single interview, the subject is broached, mostly because the interviewers are keen, they know what the readers want. And so do the actors and the writers and Joss, so they're nice about it. But as much as they all say they still love Firefly, it's seriously got to be getting tiring by now.

I'm also a little dubious about a designated "voice" or "leadership." First of all, it seems a little presumptious, that mentality about "they owe us something" that I was talking about. Second, who exactly are you thinking should be leader? Both the last thread and now this have seemed like YOU are trying to organize, putting yourself in that place. No offense, it's okay to be ambitious, but we don't really have elections. You don't have to campaign to us.

OK,

Let's a put a stop to that notion right now. I am not in the running nor do I want to be. Just a flaw, as I see it. I think that Browncoats from all over could listen to one of the originals or an older Browncoat. It's enough that I'm trying to put some suggestions on the table but all of a sudden they have hidden meanings. No hidden meanings. Even Serenity had a chain of command. A ship couldn't go far with a bunch of independent minded people in it with no leader.

Are you saying we haven't gone far as a fandom? I'm actually incredibly impressed by the fan created efforts that we have. The browncoat ball, can't stop the Serenity, the 76th battalion, etc.

Are there any fandoms out there with presidents? I mean groups like the 76th might but that's a specific subset. Is there a Star Wars fan president? Or a BSG fan president?

Who would have the right to vote? Who elects the candidates? How do we get the word out to all fans everywhere? Who's going to run the election and how do we know they're trustworthy? This just seems like too big a headache for no real gain.

Hey S-SRFR - Don't be surprised or feel too down if you don't generate a lot of excitement with your ideas. It's mainly a matter of timing, and this just ain't the right time. It's well past the series and plenty past the film, a film that we all love dearly but only did kinda ok at the b-office.
I'm all for people swinging for the fences and thinking big, but it doesn't mean a lot if you're the only person playing.

Okay then, no worries. I mean, even if that WAS something you were gunning for, that'd be okay, though that does kind of tend to make people wary.

I think the perception with the way you came in saying we oughta do this and this gave people the wrong impression. That statement will probably help clear things up.

Firefly with a leadership, though. Hmm. Normally it seems to me we just do what needs doing, and someone steps up, and people rally around them. I wasn't around during the movie push, but I've heard that's what it was like. I see your points about wanting an old timer, if we were to have a leader? But wouldn't that turn the fandom into something hierarchal, with some fans being more important than others?

What with the "greeting" you got, you may already feel that's already the way it is, but it's not, really... ^_^' There was some wrong footing and even some newcomer induced grumpiness directed your way, but I can promise you people will be willing to make some space for you, you're our equal. Only people who don't get treated as equals are blatant trolls, and it takes a LOT to be considered one. We have a guy running around who compares Obama to the lizard people on V (and worse things, but it's not my place to inure you to him) and he's even tolerated because he's more crazy than he is malicious.

And all of us really do want to see more Firefly. Even Sigma. You'll see.

Hey,

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully, I won't get to troll status. Also, one of the things that I am so impressed with about the fandom was the amount of accomplishments that the Browncoats have attained as fans.

Wow, I guess even enthusiasm can be turned around.

I'm new and I'm willing to take a lashing. Honestly, I'm just throwing ideas around (brainstorming) and trying to do what I can. To me, I think that the time, now, is critical for a last minute push to try and get another season. I don't care if it's a mail campaign or a carwash. I don't want the mantle of leadership in this. I don't think I would be qualified. There is so much suspicion toward my intentions. Wow, there must have been some really bad "fanboys" in the past. I'm sorry for what happened to this site and it's initial Browncoats in the past but, I insist that my intentions are honorable and forthright.

One thing: before posting on this site, I spent quite a bit of time on Facebook and noticed how many sad comments there were about the end of Firefly. Something needs to be done.

Thanks again for your interest and comments.
