Dunno how any of these movies follow the source material, but I get the feeling this was about as good as could be expected. Meaning the orignal book possibly is rubbish. Might be wrong. Generally, my issue with such movies deals w/ the peculiarities of said children, much like the various ' mutant powers' we see in X-Men. They're ridiculous. And yes, I do view this as a cheesy rip off of both X-Men and Harry Potter, as there are elements of ' magic ' in this story which go beyond ' peculiar ' features. I thought some of the writing was flat out abysmal, particularly between the dad character ( Frank ) and how he interacted w/ Jake, the lead. I get it. I'm well beyond the target demo for who this movie was made. But I have to think that even those who were suppose to enjoy it saw through some of the same plot holes. ( They might have been more interesting , had they been more coherently developed. ) Had hoped for much more from Eva Green after Penny Dreadful, and I guess I'm still going to have to wait.

Miss P's Home isn't in that category, thankfully. I never got the fuss over The Goonies. Kinda like Transformers, and a bunch of other lame kid's shows that continue to find their way to the big screen. Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers.... when do we get an 21st century version of Ultra Man? On second thought, Speed Racer was tried, and no one needs another disaster like that.

Always loved Henry Darrow since his "High Chapparal" days.

That was one of the flicks we recorded off of cable TV and watched so much we wore the tape out. Watching this makes it seem even stupider, but I still love it.

I usually enjoy Eva's work, and was tempted to check out this film, but haven't yet. Thanks everybody for the head's up.

Think I was in high school when it came out but not sure. It's one of my all time favorite movies, but like I said, I don't know if that's just heavy nostalgia or not. I'm probably more jaded than a lot of people my age so I'm going to say that if I saw it for the first time today that I don't think I'd like it that much. It is pretty dumb, but most kids movies are. It was magic when I was a kid though. Music in a lot of movies was just so good back then, and The Goonies was among the best of the best for kids movies back then. I was never into pirate movies or anything like that, so that part of the movie didn't do anything for me, but the exploration type movies like Indiana Jones were awesome and I saw this movie at the age where I was still so willing to explore everything in search of hidden treasure. Me and my bro and one of my best friends actually went a few miles into a storm sewer system exploring with nothing but oil soaked rags and a couple of flashlights and had water up to our thighs. Why would anybody but a dumb kid do something like that? lol I'm also not sure if its a movie that girls would get into that much. I didn't have any sisters so I can't say that a girl my age at the time would have been into it at all. It's possible though since unlike a lot of other movies from the time the girls were actually part of the action and not just some damsel in distress that needed saving. I'm fairly certain my brother saw it and a couple of friends of mine from high school as well. I liked Cyndi Lauper's music but my brother had a couple of her albums. He was really into her music.
