SPOILERS SPOILER SPOILERS AND MORE SPOILERS BELOW!!!! you have been warned.

So, anybody else seen it yet? I don't know what the reviews are complaining about. I was able to follow it just fine. The only thing I was even slightly confused about was the history between the doctor and Carol. That portion of the story wasn't very well fleshed out, but it really wasn't difficult to understand. Unrequited obsession leads to angry jerkface. Got it.

I thought the special effects were good and the lantern powers they had Hal use were cool. They had plenty enough action for my taste. That's usually a complaint I have with super hero movies, but this one had quite a few action scenes.

I really liked that they didn't have people who knew Hal be baffled by the little mask. I mean they almost let it go on too long before Carol pointed out that she recognized him.

I wish Sinestro got some more time to show off that he's a super strict dude with the people he protects. He basically just comes off as a passionate perfectionist. I saw an interview where Ryan Reynolds talked about how the audience might even like Sinestro. Why wouldn't they? I mean he was sorta a dick to Hal at first but not overly so.

The bad guys were a little lame. I mean the doc I took as just an extension of parallax. Parallax himself seemed to just be consumed by evil. That's kind of boring. I think Sinestro will be much more interesting.

Anyway what did everyone else think?

Yeah, we'd bought our tickets a couple of days early, so I was getting kinda nervous with all the scathing reviews.
Well, we liked it just fine! Dunno what everybody's problem was.

It seemed like they all grew up together. Wasn't the senator or whatever Hal's uncle or something? I agree it wasn't fleshed out well, but I got the gist of it.

I really enjoyed learning more about how the rings and green power worked with the Lanterns (note: not the 'lanterns' that charged the rings, the actual 'space cops'). I read some of the comics as a kid, but didn't understand it as I did watching the movies. And I really liked the special effects in 3D. I jumped more than once.

I had a terrible morning yesterday, so going to see this movie helped lift some of the gloom of the morning. Green Lantern's Light did its job! :D

It was fun. Not deeply intellectual or full of drama (thank goodness). Plenty of action and entertainment.

I'm hearing good things about it. Might check it out, or might wait for the DVD. Not sure yet.

I didn't really follow GL as a kid. The character / story never really appealed to me.

One question I have, from looking at a poster for the movie...

How did a cave - troll end up in the movie ?

Hmmm no cave trolls that I remember. There's a bunch of alien green lanterns. One of them looks fairly troll like. There's also a human who gets sorta mutated. It happens.

Just me, being a bit tongue in cheek. But looking at the poster, first thing I thought of is , from LOTR... " they have a cave-troll! "

What Would Mal do ?

went to see the Lantern last night ...had worked a long hard weekend so the wife and I felt like some light duty entertainment last night.

it was fine..didn't come away feeling like I wasted 90 mins of my life. The 3D looked a bit cartoonish at times and much of the backgrounds looked very 1D painted.
It felt like if the movie had another 20 mins of footage it might have developed better character depth...as it was, I came away feeling like I watched a saturday matinee flick. Certainly not the feeling I got when I first saw Iron man.

But it was consistent enough throughout..not like the Hulk which looked to have some great moments earlier on, only to get way out of proportion during the last battle with a ridiculous monster.

all in all...if you've got the movie jangle in your pocket (not a cheap date these days)..then yeah...worth a view on a slow night.

So I'm kinda doubting well get a sequel to this one now that the boxoffice numbers weren't as good as thor or first class. Sorta stinks because I thought it had some potential. Stupid critics killing a good franchise before it even got started.

We saw it at the local drive-in last weekend; not always the best place to watch a relatively dark (lighting-wise, not story-wise) film; but all four of us who went enjoyed it. Not, like several others here have said, a 'wow'...but good summer fun. Looking forward to "Cowboys and Aliens"...

The general audience doesn't pay attention to critics by and large. Terribly reviewed films are often hits, and lauded films often bomb.

Blaming Green Lantern's failure on them is a bit fallacious.

I'd say they're still a factor. I mean Green Lantern still won the weekend box office, but it didn't crush it. So, I'm pretty much saying that their impact took enough wind out of the sails that we probably won't get a sequel. I'm guessing it will barely be profitable for the studio with the international box office and dvd/blu-ray sales. Unless things suddenly pick up for some reason.

"So, I'm pretty much saying that their impact took enough wind out of the sails that we probably won't get a sequel."

Based upon?

General wisdom is that opening weekend results reflect marketing - which is what really motivates the masses one way or the other. And the ads were not well received (as evidenced by just about any comment section on any site that ran them, particularly first one - which prompted WB to shift the focus of their marketing.

Critics matter on smaller films, but they're pretty irrelevant to the box-office take on big popcorn movies. The reviews were far, FAR more harsh towards stuff like Transformers 2, and it didn't effect it one little bit - no wind taking.

Based upon just about everyone I talk to mentioning the rotten tomatoes score.

Besides I'm sure it has more of an impact on brand new franchises than on sequels. No one really knows what to expect with the Green Lantern. With Transformers it has a fairly popular cartoon to give a basic understanding and they had the first movie to know what to expect. Green Lantern doesn't have any of that. They have a small following of comic book readers. So, it seems at least among the people I know that they're pretty interested in the reviews.

Me too. But that's what they call anecdotal evidence. We're on a movie/TV based website - likely not the only ones we go to either. We're not the general audience. We have a higher interest than the general masses, and tend to speak with others. A lot of people just don't care as much, have never gone to9 a movie news site, don't read reviews, and don't know what rotten tomatoes is.

Hell, the people I know who pay attention to reviews - they still went and saw it anyway. It's not like it's a huge bomb or anything, it just isn't going to end up justifying what they spent to make it.

Uh... right. The character's been around what, 60 years? He's also been in many, many cartoons, over 3 to 4 decades. It's arguable that the character was as well known before his movie as the Transformers were before theirs.
