Dang. It was a great video. I'm sure it's out there elsewhere. Will repost when I find it.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I don't see how there is enough story there to fill three movies, unless he incorporates some of The Silmarillion in a long prologue. If The Hobbit needs to be three movies, then the Lord of the Rings should have been six.

The catch here is, most of the material making up the 3 movies , well much of it at least, will come from Tolkien's notes concerning the White Council, and the dealings w/ the Necromancer at Dol Guldur, and not from the actual events of The Hobbit proper.

I have slight problem with this approach. First, The Hobbit doesn't read like the LOTR trilogy. It's more of a children's tale, an introduction into Middle Earth, as it were, and where we first get to see Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, and even a Dragon. The histories and great deeds of ages past don't so much concern the travelers, and only in passing do they get intertwined in w/ the fate of the ONE ring. Where as the LOTR trilogy is epic and on a large scale, The Hobbit, for its part, concerns mainly on matters at the local level, and more or less in the present time.

I'm just afraid that, for what ever reason, ( money, ego, or to bring as much of Tolkien's work to the screen as possible ) the children's story that is The Hobbit will end up looking a lot like what we've already seen before.

Hope I'm wrong.

Gandalf does a ton "off-screen" in The Hobbit – there's an entire B plot where he and the other wizards flush The Necromancer out of his northern hold, and the dude turns out to be Sauron's spirit in disguise, and a bunch of other wacky stuff. You don't SEE any of this, Gandalf just kinda spits out an expository outline at the end, after the Battle of the Five Armies. So there are tons of depths to plumb, and those depths will likely be filled with Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee. So, uhh...sold.

And though the lord of the eagles became in after days the King of All Birds and wore a golden crown, and his fifteen chieftains golden collars (made of the gold that the dwarves gave them), Bilbo never saw them again -- except high and far off in the battle of Five Armies. But as that comes in at the end of this tale we will say no more about it just now.

You're basing the whole story of The Hobbit on a few seconds of trailer clips? But that does give rise to a bit of concern I have, and why I'm less excited about how this story is going to be treated.

I'm bothered that, much as Lucas chose to dumb down the Star Wars saga, the lust for the might $ is going to distort The Hobbit in a similar fashion. I hope I'm wrong.
*edit* - I just saw a Hobbit tie in with DENNY's, of all places. Good grief... this does not bode well.

BDH42 - I admit, I'm unfamiliar w/ Mr Freeman's work, but at first glance, I do like the choice.

TWO - Great paragraph on the eagles. I was gonna re-read The Hobbit again, before the movie. Read it a half dozen times, or more already. Been a few years though.

Christopher Lee says he's read The Hobbit almost annually, for many years. Maybe the entire trilogy too, over and over. I think he'd have made a great Gandalf, but Peter Jackson went w/ Sir Ian. Can't complain, either way.

Just a few hours until I'm off to see the midnight viewing.

This will be my 4th midnight viewing of the Tolkien movies so far. I had thought of re-reading the book, prior to seeing the movie, but instead, chose not to. Not yet. I wanted to instead go into this movie as clear headed on Middle Earth, as best I could , and not try to compare every detail from the book to how Peter Jackson presents the story.

I've also tried to limit seeing too many trailers, as I want to let the movie sort of speak for itself, and not go in w/ too many preconceptions of what I'd already seen. ( I have, as an aside, watched the BBC's SHERLOCK, and am anxious to see how Mr Freeman does as Bilbo. )

If this is to be true to Tolkien's writings, then there WON'T be a bunch of foreshadowing or hints through out the movie of the impending rise of Sauron, or any sign of the Nazgul. This 'evil in the south', which Gandalf goes to face, SHOULD be entirely different from what's to come, later in the Lord of the Rings.

We shall see.
