Hello,

I have acquired tickets to a showing this weekend. I have been glued to the rottentomatoes reviews. Mixed bag. Somewhat ominous. I want to keep my expectations grounded in reality, so I read the bad ones first.

I invite anyone who has seen the movie to post a review here. I am anxious for Fireflyfan perspective.

Going to see it tonight, at midnight.

One second hand review I've heard, is very favorable, though I've tried to steer clear of reviews, trailers and even a list of the cast.

I'll avoid giving too many details, at first, and let others see it for themselves, before commenting , other than if I liked the movie, or not.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Work has gotten busy this past week, and not only will I not be able to make a midnight showing tonight, I might not get the chance to see it tomorrow either. Hopefully Saturday.

Hee hee... I had planned to go w/ one friend to the midnight showing, but since their schedule wasn't really friendly towards staying out late, we decided to go see it on Friday, after lunch.

They don't know I'll have already seen it, so this should be interesting.

Hello,

Incidentally, are you seeing it 2D, 3D, 24 frames, 48 frames?

There seems to be some controversy over the technology.

2D, dunno of the frames. Guess I can check that out. I saw one movie in 3D, maybe the Avengers ? I wasn't really impressed w/ experience.

OK, some quick first impressions, no spoilery, as I can, on The Hobbit.

Excessive embellishment. Now, it can be seen as a clever way of presenting the story ( I'm guessing that's how PJ will spin it ) , and I do appreciate this and that, here and there. But good grief... Somewhere, among the needlessly extra scenes and plots, you can actually spot the story of The Hobbit, as Tolkien wrote it. But ya gotta be paying attention.

Peter Jackson's obsession of the cliff shot. Dude LOVES, more than ANYTHING, to perch characters inches away from 1000 ft drop offs, or have them amble along ridiculously narrow mountain trails. More than Joss loves killing off beloved characters, even. It's a bit much.

Martin Freeman does a fine young Bilbo. More in line w/ how I imagine the character to be, than Ian Holm,

Good flick ? Sure. I'd give it a B.

Now - off to bed.

ZEEK

I liked it. It was obviously a bit drawn out. I'm sure they could have fit all the relevant stuff into 2 movies. Whatever it was still good. Had a friend who never read the book who was bored. I could see that being a big dividing factor. If you have some idea of what to expect going in then you won't be disappointed. If you're expecting a lord of the rings movie then it's just not going to be the same scale.

Select to view spoiler:

There were definitely some changes thrown in here or there.

Pretty much right off the bat they seemed to have changed how Bilbo ends up going along. I thought that he was fairly wishy washy on it and it took Gandalf startling him and waking him up and basically running him out the door without thinking for it all to get started. Instead they have Bilbo decide on his own at the last minute to join the company.

There was more about the necromancer. I take it that is going to be a major plot point with the council going after him. That's a logical way for them to extend the story.

Riddles in the dark were spot on IMO. This was one of the things my friend complained about. He didn't think they needed to go through so many riddles. I think they even cut one of them. It was cool. Though finding the ring was retconned. Instead of stumbling on it like they said in LotR he just sees it in the glow of sting and picks it up. Seems an odd point to retcon. Just have him trip and fall on the ring. Easy peasy.

I was really glad the wargs were wolflike. I thought that maybe the things the orcs rode in LotR were supposed to be wargs but they didn't really look like wolves to me. Glad to see that the wargs are about how I imagined them.

I'm not a tolkien buff, but there is like a leader of the orcs who has a history with thorin. That seemed like it was added in to give the chases and fights more weight.

We don't get to see Smaug. I mean we see like a tail and an eye and a leg but never a full shot of him.

It ends with the eagles saving the company from the orcs & wargs. It's unclear if it will start the next movie with the eagles or if they just skipped the eagles feeding and helping the company. I think it would be better if they went into that a little more. That was a complaint of a lot of the people I saw the movie with. "Why didn't they just call the eagles from the start instead of walking?" Dude the eagles aren't a taxi service. They're not fans of goblins and orcs so they'll help out to thwart some evil, but they're not just going to give rides to people for any old journey. It would be nice if they cleared that up a little.

I gotta say one of the worst parts of the movie is that the ending is so abrupt. It didn't really feel like a good stopping point. Sure they just escaped one peril on their journey, but it didn't seem like a conclusion to anything. Even "to be continued..." tv shows usually end on a much better note. It would have almost been better to end on a cliff hanger. Quite literally they could have ended with the dwarfs hanging in the tree over a cliff. Maybe end with Thorin falling. Then they could start the next movie with the eagles swooping in to save the day.

Since the spoilers have already come out, I'll happily join in.

Zeek, a couple of your points, I agree with, 100%.

Select to view spoiler:

1 On the riddles - one of my fav parts of the movie. Still, where Gollum bashes the orc to death, was a bit much. Even though it IS, after all, exactly what Gollum had been doing to them, for many years. Usually, it was the younger orcs that he'd murder. Showing it like that, in that particular moment, seemed excessive.

2. The eagles - loved 'em. Almost straight out of the book, as I imagined.

3. Wargs looking more like wolves than Hyenas. I dig that, a lot.

Now, here's where I had some MAJOR issues with the movie...

Select to view spoiler:

Radagast The Brown - I believe, in all the books ( Hobbit and Rings Trilogy, his name is mentioned ONCE. That's it. Merely in passing. I get that, as part of the White Council, he would play a role in the events of taking down the Necromancer, but introducing him so early, and so prominently, was over kill, imo.

The Riddle of the Morgul blade - Absolutely unnecessary. That, and ANY reference to Sauron, in this movie, just ticks me off. Has NO place , at all, in the Hobbit. That's the reason his return is such a shock to them, later on in the LOTR. It's only AFTER the events in the Hobbit take place, do they piece together the clues that, indeed, Sauron has returned. Which is SIXTY YEARS LATER ! Even though there's a hint of suspicion, it's something none will dare even speak of , until there's no denying it. It's just flat out wrong!

Dwarves - Don't like the lot of them. Hardly a 1 of them LOOKS like a dwarf. See Gimli, as a proto type. They look more like a band of gypsies, of varying age and background. And also, I get why PJ went to so much trouble setting up the back story, of Smaug and all, but it's over kill. Not only do I really not buy into, or really CARE about the whole ' REVENGE ' story, the title of the movie is CALLED " The Hobbit ". It isn't RETURN OF THORIN Oakenshield. ( as viewed by Bilbo Baggins )

CGI Orcs - Remember, in LOTR, all those awesome orcs , and their gear ? Damn near every single orc in this movie is made on a computer. It's clear to me that, to show maximum orcs but put out minimum effort, PJ chose to scrap the Weta workshop route, and instead go George Lucas, and just phony it up on the computer.

And also ( but probably not finally ) - The music. It's the same damn score from LOTR !! When Thorin goes after the pale orc ( more on that later ), there's no NEW music to set him apart from the men of Gondor or the Elves. Don't dwarves deserve their own theme ? They just recycled the same music, and cut more costs there as well.

A couple of other things which annoyed me... Well, 3 more things.

Select to view spoiler:

Jackson's editing and landscape choices are aggravating as all get out. As the party nears Rivendell, after they've dealt w/ the trolls, they're in the forest. A pack of wargs and orcs set upon them, and then, on foot, they have to flee for their lives. A few strides away, the're in wide open country. No trees to be seen anywhere. Rocks are all about, and they look as if they're more on the northern borders of Rohan. Then, still on foot, and running about, the landscape changes completely again, and everywhere there's short grass, not so many rocks. Then, a few strides later, back to more rocks, where Gandalf finds a 'secret passage', down under and between a couple of boulders. The party makes it's way, maybe a few hundred yards, and bam! They're suddenly in Rivendell. A HUGE valley, which was no where near them, just 5 minutes ago. Again, all this is on foot.

Timeline - Sauron was destroyed 3000 years ago. Elrond himself was there, and says this, in the FOTR. So suddenly, at the first sign of 'bad things' Saruman, Gandalf et al are already talking about 'The Enemy' as being back. Huh? Just like that, you're already jumping to conclusions ? ( See above on why that's so ridiculous. )

Lake Town - The men of Dale, in the book, lived ON THE LAKE. But in the movie, their city resembles , to a lesser degree, Gondor. All of stone and built on land.
It's stuff like that, where there was a great opportunity to go with something completely new, design wise, and instead, they just recycled old ideas ( and maybe old props ) paint them a different color, and call it a day. Lame.

Enjoyable. More lighthearted than LOTR, more kid friendly elements, but enjoyable. Think that the critics are panning it for fake objectivity - audience response is notably more positive than critical reaction.

Added some elements that weren't in the book less sure about, and a chase sequence in the middle ran long. Otherwise good.

Select to view spoiler:

Stone giants thing was odd. Almost Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots in LOTR verse. Out of place. Seem to recall in the books originally the orcs caught up to them, dropping rocks from above, and they sought refuge in the caves only for it to be a trap.

Radagast also odd, but aside from a surreal sequence with a hedgehog actually liked that. Did however lead to aforementioned too long chase scene.

In fairness they ARE gypsies. I actually liked seeing some different looks on the dwarves - not being stereotyped is actually kinda nice.

If you go back and watch FOTR, where they hold the council in Rivendell, of all the free peoples, the dwarves that show up there, along w/ Gimli, LOOK like dwarves Granted, they may have been all dwarves of some stature, and importance, but their build, mannerisms, dress... was unmistakable.

The 'band' in The Hobbit movie, was anything but. Not only did they not resemble how the dwarves looked in the book itself, but they were entirely unlike what we'd seen before. And Bombur ? Please...

As for the other stuff....

Select to view spoiler:

The rock giants were a neat adaptation of what was in the book. I do think that PJ, once again, took things too far, in having the dwarves themselves end up ON one of the giants, instead of merely dodging the effects of the fighting.

Also, had PJ decided to go w/the book version of them hiding in the cave, it would have been one of the better scenes in the movie. Instead of the floor opening up, and the party falling down into some slide like array, and ending up in a cage like device, Bilbo hears a 'click' , in the back of the cave. The goblins ( orcs ) have a hidden door, which they use to surprise the party , as they lay sleeping, and haul them down into the dark caves. PJ's silly open cavern, with all these rickety wooden bridges running everywhere was beyond lame.

I forget how Bilbo ends up apart from the group, but I seem to think he gets left behind, and has to find a way into the orc tunnels, and some how save his friends. That would have made for a far more suspenseful scenario than the nonsensical tripe we saw.

The dwarves in FOTR were established and respectable. These 13 are wanderers and the last survivors from their Erebor. Their clothes and appearance are odd and eccentric and cast off compared to the dwarves of LOTR. I was not bothered by that, I thought it fit. They were dwarves at least in their table manners, and their love of fighting, gold, drink, and insistence upon loyalty, and ultimately that's what makes them dwarves. That and their beards. :)

I don't remember that part of the Misty Mountain sequence at all, but it has been a long time since I read the story. I did not mind how the trap was set up.

Not saying I won't go see the final two movies, but there won't be any repeat midnight viewings. Not by me there won't.

If others liked it, then fine. I just wish PJ had stuck more to the book, instead of being so damn stubborn in trying to dumb it down and draw direct ties to the LOTR. He really did over think a bunch of this, and all his tinkering has actually made things LESS coherent, harder to follow , for the average, non Tolkien fan, than had he just told it straight. Oh well.

I haven't read any of the spoilers on this thread yet, didn't want them to influence the review I will be writing for my site. All I'll say right now is that if you loved the LotR's movies but haven't read the books you will probably think it is great. If you've read The Hobbit and wanted to see a straight-up adaptation then you're going to be a bit disappointed, or at least confused about why PJ felt the need to include everything he did (and in one instance show Bilbo doing something that never happened).

I'm hoping they release two versions on video, the theatrical version and then one edited down to the story as it should have been told.

Hello,

I saw the film today. Both my wife and I enjoyed it. She actually seemed disappointed when it was over, which is surprising for such a long film. She predictably liked aspects like Radagast the Brown and his animals, which were absent from the novel except for passing mentions and in appendices. I didn't mind the emphasis on Azog, since I think the film actually benefits from some kind of enduring villain that carries on from place to place.

I think PJ actually made some good decisions that widened cinematic appeal. I don't mind a moviemaker shaking things up a bit. It's part of their job to interpret the story and not merely copy each page to the screenplay.

Select to view spoiler:

I'd have skipped the whole mountain-giant spectacle myself, but my wife, who had never read the book, did not seem put off by it.

To be honest, besides the giants, there were only two things that I didn't care for.

I'd have preferred that the dwarf used a sling instead of a slingshot.

And I'd have liked some brief expository blurb about the eagles.

I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Gotta agree w/ some of the review.

While there were some undeniably amazing scenes, here or there, which were masterfully done, there are also other scenes, and sub plots brought up, or expanded on, which simply didn't need to be - at all.

I'm not so much surprised at the excellent parts of the movie, but I am very much disappointed at so much of the rest of the film. Other than rushing through it, or cutting cost, I really don't see what was the point.

Hello,

Wow. I think this reviewer is directing his anger in the wrong direction, if he feels that his country sold itself out. This seems more about what New Zealand felt compelled to do to have filming performed in their country, and less about Peter Jackson enslaving that country.

Next time he should perhaps encourage his countrymen and representatives to say "No" if they are getting a raw deal.

New Zealand was free to answer yes or no, but either way Peter Jackson was an asshole, as was the captain of the S.S. Walden in Out of Gas who said to Mal 'you would have done the same in my place'.

For allowing New Zealand to keep its claim to The Hobbit, New Zealand taxpayers had to agree to Warner Brothers getting reported tax rebates of 75% of the film’s budget. Warner Brothers got an award for The Worst Transnational Corporation Operating in New Zealand in 2010 and Peter Jackson got Quisling of the Year (a term named after Norwegian Prime Minister Vidkun Quisling who sold his own country out and actively collaborated with the Nazi takeover in 1940).

Even a 75% rebate means 25% of over 300 million they never would have seen. And knowing something about film rebates, there is no way that it applied to the entire budget (rebated cannot be applied to equipment, for instance).

And just becuase some people have a grudge, it doesn't make all their complaints worthwhile. There are LOTS of Kiwi who are very happy with the industry Jackson has brought to their country.

Having looked up his receiving that award - every blog that mentions it is written like some angry/paranoid PiranteNews with an accent vibe...

There is the sheer hypocrisy of various parties doing everything they can to maximize how much money they can screw out of a small country – all to make a series of films where the overriding theme by Tolkien was one about the perils of greed.

Hello,

I understand that, but if the deal was not favorable, why should they want to keep their claim to The Hobbit?

If the deal was a bad one, the answer ought to have been, "Thank you but no Thank you. We think we are worth XYZ and that it is worth your while to do business here. No one else offers the vistas/environment/etc that we offer. So either come up with a better deal or allow your film to suffer by virtue of using inferior locations."

Have you not seen enough episodes of Firefly to make you a little suspicious of Prime Ministers and Parliaments? That was one of Firefly's big themes.

Rather than an equatable contract between corporations, where all the costs are known in detail by both sides, think of the Hobbit more cynically. Try imagining the Hobbit vs New Zealand deal being about threats & bribes and accepting graft.

Said more politely, corruption is to a great extent a hidden activity that is difficult to measure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_in_New_Zealand

Hello,

This reinforces my belief that if New Zealanders want to be upset, they should be upset at the representatives who sold them out.

When the hell did this becomes less about the movie and instead a thread about turning New Zealand into a third world , movie making sweatshop?

Weird.

Not weird at all because the twisting and turning business corruption story was much more significant than the finished product about a magic ring. But I understand those who believe in magic and don't believe in government would not agree. They just want to have fun, fun, fun all the time no matter how the goddamned movie was made.

Hello,

I understand that, but if the deal was not favorable, why should they want to keep their claim to The Hobbit?

Probably because Tolkein and Rings-related tourism has been their biggest industry for the last decade...

So, better to turn away millions in income (also cutting their own throat on the tourism side).... just because? Brilliant rationale.

TWO - my question was primarily rhetorical. This thread was suppose to be about THE MOVIE. See, it's in the 'cinema' forum, and not RWED forum.

Please, make a note of it.

REAVERFAN

It's been decades since I read the book. Even I noticed that the movie was quite different, but that's not a bad thing.

It had a certain "Pixar" element to it. Every fight, fall, chase, etc. had to have the most athletic and narrowest escape possible. It's good fun, but I thought it was a little over the top at times.

The Hobbit is such a charming story in its own right, it didn't need all the flashy action to make us care about the characters. That said, I understand that the target audience is young enough to be my kid. They want thrills and spills. That's the standard.

Exactly. The story tells itself in a fine fashion, there was no reason to add anything to certain action scenes, just to add more POP! I know PJ CAN be true to the story and put out a quality product, he simply chooses not too. I really think he feels he needs to add even MORE nonsense to certain scenes, to set himself apart from Tolkien. Otherwise, he's simply doing the work of another story teller, and that makes Jackson feel like he's not as much a part of the process, or something. The guy simply can't help himself, which is a pity.

Again, he's playing to the audience by giving it what the story already has. And if he's truly intent on trying to introduce more of Middle Earth to those who still haven't read the books, I think he's doing them a bit of disservice. By changing the story so much, it'll make the original all the more unrecognizable. I think the book is, of course, far superior, but I think PJ could have done more to reinforce Tolkien's work , instead of piling onto it, for the sake of making more and more $.

So, HBO is showing The Unexpected JOURNEY... *sigh*

That still gets on my nerves.

And so, as the holiday season approaches, soon the pitch for 'Smaug' will kick in.

I wonder if this will be any good,... why do I ask questions to which I already know the answers.

Oh well.

At least Thor is coming up soon. Maybe that'll be a decent flick ?
