A worthy entry in the franchise. Not as good as Alien or Aliens, better than the AvP garbage.

Note: there is no CGI in this film. Instead, they brought back Ian Holm from the dead to play the same "character" again.

Want to hate on corporate greed? They serve you up plenty here. More than in Aliens.

This certainly fits in the horror genre, because most of the characters do really stupid things that will kill them.

It does include some cool twists, which I don't think I've seen before.

Cool. That's at least a better review than Nerdrotic gave it.

Not that I watched Nerdrotic's video. I don't really like that dude. But I heard today that he didn't care for the flick.

How does this rate next to Alien 3?

I didn't like A3 when I was a kid, but I've since watched it again after seeing AvP and I had a lot more appreciation for it than I did when I was 11 years old.

I think they are different genre of film, or at least emphasis.

A3 was more action than horror - following Aliens. Everybody knew the horror, not much surprise or shock, but action battle, cat and mouse, still on a spaceship.

Romulus is more horror than action - at least for the characters, who don't know what they came across. Characters do the same dumb things that slasher films are known for (except nobody has sex).

So, I say Romulus is a better horror entry than A3, but A3 is a better action entry than Romulus.

I saw the first 4 Alien in cinema. Have rewatched Aliens many times, and Alien a few. Trying to recall A3 well enough over that time span, I feel that they are about even - perhaps Romulus a tad better, for a few reasons I won't mention now.

BTW, I forgot to mention: I had wondered the genesis of the film being called Romulus.
One of the settings in the film is a ship or space station or lab, which is 2 identical halves which could each be independent. Remus and Romulus. None of that should be spoilery.

I guess I'd have to rewatch A3 again, since it's still been about 20 years since I've seen it. I don't remember it as a "movie that still takes place on a ship".

My memories of that movie is a bald Sigourney Weaver on a prison planet. I didn't remember it being much "action" like Aliens since they didn't have much in the way of weapons like the marines in Aliens did. I remember the reason I didn't like it when I first saw it was because after everything they went through in Aliens they just unceremoniously killed off Newt and Hicks off screen before the movie started and now we're supposed to care about all these new prisoner characters we've never seen before.

I didn't hate the 4th one that much either, come to think of it. CGI aliens in parts of that movie were crap, but it was alright.

Excluding the AVP garbage, I haven't seen any of the Aliens movies after those first 4 movies. I think it's really the Predator stuff that I hate after the 2nd Predator movie. Prey was a step up from the rest of them, but Predator movies are just pretty bad in general after Predator II.

Is that a fact?

I've kind of tuned most of it out recently.

I think the Nerds won. I think we won.

I've started to watch some things again after years of going without most TV and movies and with rare exception it's all been pretty damn good. Granted, I'm a lot more picky than most on what I choose to watch.

I wonder what the guys who've built careers complaining about things are going to do when there's not much to complain about anymore. I think some of them were smart and started diversifying several years back, but they're not going to have the built-in audience they did 5 years ago for much longer if things keep on this positive trajectory.

I think some of them are going to invent problems, just like people on the Left have done when they won the various culture wars they were fighting.

I haven't watched much Critical Drinker after he shit on the Roadhouse remake like he did. I'm not saying that it was a great movie. I'm not saying that it was a movie I asked for. But it was not a bad movie and it certainly was not woke. There either was a better movie for him to critique at that time, or if there wasn't maybe he should have taken a week off or made a video outside of his wheelhouse to try to expand the brand. He's made a lot of great content for many years, but when he lowers himself to calling something woke that wasn't woke he's not only devaluing his brand, but he's also trivializing all of the previous content he created when it was necessary.

That's why I'm interested in seeing that JSF seems to think that Romulus isn't a bad movie. I never cared much for Nerdrotic, and it doesn't surprise me that he didn't like it. I'm really curious to see what somebody like Dave Cullen thought about it.

Anyhow, I thought of a comparable storyline to Romulus.
The Thing (1982)

Although I recall that film as excellent (and therefore superior to Romulus), the thematic elements felt quite similar - setting, isolation, revelations, urgency/excitement, etc. The graphic imagery of the villain in Romulus seems to suffer in comparison tho - technically fine, but maybe just too precise. The lighting for Romulus is darker - they don't have snow. But I think Romulus better than Leviathon. IIRC, Leviathon also had the evil corporate aspect involved.

SPOILER ALERT!

The 3rd post after this post, from our Resident Illiterate, contains Spoilers.
The film draws out the story, and backstory, in a patient and logical progression.
There is no need to bypass the story with illiterate blathering in this thread.

Well now...

I think you might be selling it to me.

If The Thing (1982) isn't my favorite movie of all time, it ranks pretty damn high on the list.

I won't expect The Thing if I watch it, because that could only end up being a letdown to me if I did because I hold that movie in such high regard... but maybe I can get past the completely unnecessary horse cock face hugger scene they showed in the trailer and give it a watch.

Seen it, a good movie

its 'H R Giger' that's what I would compare it to
the main lead is a girl named 'Rain' she lives on a dark, miserbale, cold, smog, cloudy mega dark forever night planet

Who owns Aliens?
Fox got bought up by Marvel and then of course Disney purchased 'Marvel'...so now Fox want to show everyone they still have property for what? More Aliens Video Games...a Tv show? More movies?

Scifi has been around on tv a while 'Flash Gordon' campy?
Dark Star 1974 is a fun movie, after that Carpenter went cult hits while Dan O'Bannon moved into the nmainstream with star Wars and Aliens and Total Recall
Aliens came with pure horror

and many years ago Fox wanted to say they had more than 'Star Wars', Fox an old studio had Cleopatra, Charlie Chan, Dr. Dolittle, The Omen...but scifi was getting big

a 1977 American epic space opera by George Lucas was a huge hit for them, scifi was 'hot'...so way back in 1977 along came the horror Alien script for Fox a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Dan O'Bannon unlike anything seen before and a lot of inspiration taken from H R Giger a Swiss artist, weird animals, steel and organic machine, evil looks with odd shapes, sexual poses, mechanical beast machinery, predator and prey best known for his airbrushed images that blended human physiques with machines, an art style known as "biomechanical". H R Giger had a crazy depressive girlfriend 'Tobler' lived with Giger in squalor sometimes in condemned buildings, they wouldn't stay with him she was a swinger they eventually becoming romantically involved and suicides, killing herself, his work already somewhat dark got 'Ultra Dark' the Macabre grim or ghastly atmosphere" Ridley Scott compared him to Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon.”
Here is a letter from James Cameron more or less admitting he had stolen his artistic work and apologizing to H. R. Giger for not involving him in 'Aliens'
http://www.hrgiger.com/james_cameron.htm

There are two other big works by Giger the PC video game 'Dark Seed' I never played but it looks like a weird Psychological Horror all these devilish machine babylon creature satanic occult symbols in a nightmare world. A writer has recently bought an old mansion with some portal to an Alien Hell, clues about the previous owner's death, which reveal the existence of a parallel universe called the Dark World ruled by sinister aliens called the Ancients.
Species is another of H R Giger's a 1995 Sci-Fi Horror film they get an Alien SETI message from space which contains a sample of alien DNA, they build an alien mixing it with a baby she matures fully with two things in mind: survival at any cost, and reproduction.
Alien-3 stolen art work? the Oscars or Academy Awards overlooked Giger's contribution to Alien3. However, Ridley Scott included Giger's name along with nominees Carlo Rambaldi and Richard Johnson. Fox, at the time Alien3 was released, pointed out that studios are precluded from submitting nominees in the effects category directly to the Academy. This upset Giger so much that at one point he sent Academy president Karl Malden a fax with this closing comment: "I am under the strong impression that my contribution to the visual effects of the nominated movie has been intentionally suppressed", signing the letter with a large black pentagram.
Giger however would comment that he thought the resulting film was "okay" and that the Alien was "better than in the second film."

-cinemas-iconic-movie-monster-212239680.html

1992 when video games had basic graphics and terrible sound

There are possible H R Giger influence on Dune's goth look, rumors of Jodorowsky’s Dune instead of Lynch 1984

https://www.duneinfo.com/unseen/hr-giger

other work

'Passagen'
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069063/

his occult actress and weird obsessive dead girlfriend who committed suicide is in this...after this time Giger got even more 'Dark'

The new Alien Romulus
its an 'Interquel' film...not a prequel not a sequel not a reboot and re-imagining but Interquel artistic property are a thing now with Stars Wars and Mandalorian and others until they ruined those franchises. As all these art properties try to get more money for their franchises they start to feel like they were made by a committee or something, maybe an AI type of Artificial Intelligence script writer helping them make sure they tick all the boxes. The Spain? Uruguay director was already skilled at the horror franchise and Aliens at times is not that far removed from pure 'Horror' but in space.

Non-linear story telling somewhat revisionist but not a 'Retcon' of Halloween 2018 the 'Interquels'...The Nun Chapter Two, StarWars Rogue One, Black Widow, Furiosa A Mad Max, SagaResident Evils...Fox now sees something in the 'Interquel' concept

What also take the original Aliens films are great Direction and great performance "Sigourney" Weaver, Lance Henriksen, Veronica Cartwright, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Tom Skerritt just to name a few...other movies of the Alien franchise had great actors but they just didn't mix it and create that horrror spectacle of the original 2

When someone pushes religiosity in threads I can be anti-Religion, I might tolerate a little Christian or Buddhist stuff since they are 'benign' at times let's say not likely to suing you or killing you for offense against their religion fictions... but the more someone pushes political religion crap the more Atheist I become and push back especially if they have Theocracy mind, the Babylon Talmud or that Quran or Koran crap as supreme ruling authorities.
Jew-elstaitefan doesn't seem to get this so the argument continues and I have had disagreements especially when someone starts screeching 'Why Aren't You Supporting Israel!'
hissyfits happen and people are accused of holocausting all the Jews or bla bla about Anti-Semitical languages or you get accused of being a 'Terrorist' for not supporting Israel bombings kids
or Jew-el-staitefan gloats about the bombing of the USS Liberty but that's another of the mud slinging issues across the community forum...if someone doesn't worship the asshole of Israel someone here a dumb fuck will be always having their hissy fits.

Like music and art everyone has their own tastes

I never liked Alien 3 but I thought some moments were ok or good but overall I rank Alien3 kind of 'bad' so for me this new movie Alien Romulus ranks among the top three vs Alien or Aliens and I think it is far better than Alien 3, as bad as Alien-3 is maybe Alien-3 is a step over Joss crap in Resurrection. There is a good moment with Bishop but as a whole Alien 3 does not work, it had torturous delayed production, killing off Hicks and Newt offscreen was very lazy, some models are good but some cgi does not hold today and is quite bad, not all of Alien 3 is cgi most of it is puppets, green screen and photo chemical work and models enhanced by Computer Generated Imagery but when its wrong you really notice it, this of course was the early days of CGI while today studios can making stunning fantasy visuals like Avengers, Dark Knight, Gravity, District 9, X-Men Days of Future Past, Pirates of the Caribbean...some old movies like Terminator have Fx which hold up but Alien-3 does not IMO.

The best movie is probably Alien 1979
second place Aliens 1986 but I could be maybe convinced to to rank Aliens a little higher, they are very close
Alien Romulus would come in third place

I don't really care for the other Aliens films but I respect the movie making effort, Prometheus and Covenant with robot Michael Fassbender were at times good effort to add some backstory but I also found them a bit silly or boring or strange, Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride
Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce...I would not be able to watch Jussie Smollett again and would just switch them off.

at the bottom are the Aliens vs Predator crap which are unwatchable

Ridley Scott no longer in the driving seat he's a Producer and maybe that's a good thing after Napoleon

Although the franchise is old, the film has energy, youth and freshness

the FX the sound the lights and practical sets are super impressive I would not be shocked to learn some of the original teams of special effects artists came back to work on the new picture

Watch It maybe
I'd recommend
yes Ive seen it and its a good movie

maybe a high 7/10 there are two very good actors in the movie

Female lead is very strong.
2 Actors do very well, there is a Black British actor I had not seen in other movies, at first I didn't really like the character he plays a kind of broken retarded 'retired' robot and then an upgraded one. What I didn't go for at first maybe I was comparing already to other Aliens and the android Ian Holm, Michael Fassbender, Lance Henriksen who all did great jobs playing artificial people but the story grows into its own, but the Black British actor does great as it develops I don't know his name.
EDIT
David Jonsson...he's English theater
It also starts on a world on the ground rather than starting on a spaceship like typical Aliens movies, the actress Caylee ? Cailee Spaeny? she was in a neo-noir thriller recently which I have not watched, Priscilla a biographical drama based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me and she was recently in 'Civil War' where she plays a young photographer, there are moments in Aliens where she really nails it.

The lighting and set and sound for 'Romulus' is a visual tribute a sound or dialogue tribute to all other Aliens films. Maybe it goes too far and rather than being its own movie it starts doing too many nods and winks and tributes to the Alien fandom itself. I think it is far better than all the other Aliens, the Alien 3 prison colony and alien dog, Alien Resurrection by Joss which seemed a bit dumb, it is better than Prometheus, and much better than Alien Covenant.

'Alien Romulus' is not The Thing 1982 and the remake of 'The Thing' 1982 is not Aliens, The Thing has no robots it is originally based on Who Goes There / The Thing from Another World story. The Thing is more like a Doppelganger Invasion of the Body Snatchers film, the snowy isolation of Snowpiercer, Harbinger Down a silly monster movie or Fargo or the thing is like every other fun Carpenter movie with fun Kurt Russell one liners.
John Carpenter lived on the fringes of Hollyweird he at times feels like B-movie although his movies are great on 'Surviving' Hollywood, Ridley Scott and James Cameron became big shots who made it to 'big time' A + List.

If people don't remember the movies you watch....
...then I can see how you could make the mistake of think Aliens and 'The Thing' are same-ish when they are not. At no time did I ever feel the sense of human cold, long winters of British Columbia and Alaska made to look like the South Pole and at no time did I see human isolation as I seen in 'The Thing' and no time did I see an 80s Male Action star with funny one-liners. Alien Romulus has androids doing bad things like in other classic movies 'The Terminator' or Blade Runner, The Thing 1984 Carpenter has a different vibe and feel in his movies, they are fun even when they are horror. At no time watching Aliens films do I think 'fun' Carpenter uses good foreshadowing and for people alter he spoils the entire concept of “The Thing” within the first few minutes of his film but at the same time you are not sure 'Who' is the alien 'Thing' as its hidden by first person perspective. The link to other spaceships and robots of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation gives Aliens more of a Blade Runner Dystopia Grimdark feel, all though they are similar subject matter they are totally different films. The Thing however is set in the current on Planet Earth not in the scifi future, The Thing could feel more like 'They Live' it has no 'girl power' at the South Pole. 'Alien Romulus' begins in a dark space town in a mining community, 'The Thing' does not travel anywhere it is isolation of Antarctica. You could argue 'The Thing' has more of the imposter going on like in There Will Be Blood, Face/Off at no time do you feel the Alien in Alien Romulus has replaced one of the crew / cast. The Thing is more grounded even though it is scifi it follows rules, like being stuck at the South Pole over winter. Alien Romulus has plot devices like space travel and cryo sleep and black gray science 'goo' injections where you feel and see an 'escape plot' coming, you might even compare Alien Romulus to other feminist films the Resident Evil film series, Elektra, Mortal Engines, Alita Battle Angel Strong Female Leads, but Aliens didn't over do the feminism thing it also feels more like a Slasher horror. It lacks surprises at times and in Alien Romulus you almost know who is get stabbed and ripped apart next through third person perspective you always know who has the alien thing inside them.

I don't think its like 'The Thing' for reasons explained but each person has their own ear and eye for music or art, people see things differently.

If I would compare this movie to anything it would be to all the other Aliens films or compare it to Giger's dark weird odd evil looking bio machine 'Artwork' it feels like it has a lot of the good, high rated Aliens films in it and less of the bad movies of the franchise but maybe spends to much time ding a lot of nods and winks and tribute to the franchise while forgetting to finish a story by itself, it has some great moments.

However it also can feel like a dumb slasher, if you've seen the trailer where there are these bunch of guys and girls and one of them when an Urban British 'Accent' says 'There Something In the Water'...well its kinda like that, stupid people in a slasher movie doing stupid things when they are about to get themselves killed.

but there is enough material in it to make it a good movie and at times very good

I can't really describe any more without SPOILERS so let's just leave it at thumbs up review

as for Alien-3 some Fans and Artists HATE it
pretend it never happened

even actors continue as if Alien-3 does not exist

It's made $226,815,007 worldwide so far, but slowing down pretty hard.

On an $80 Million budget it's already a success and made over $26 Million.

I think it would be a real shame if it grosses less than A Quiet Place: Day One, which pulled in over $261 Million.

It's only in its 2nd week and it's pulling in the weekly numbers that Day One pulled in during its 4th week. That's really a matter of timing though. Romulus came out with a loaded box office that Day One had the benefit of avoiding back when every blockbuster was failing.
