$100 Million Budget.

$13 Million preview Thursday. $41,500,000 in total after Friday.

2nd place so far this weekend is Deadpool & Wolverine with $1,700,000 on Friday night.

I don't watch WDW pro because I find podcasts to be really boring, but my old man does from time to time and those guys fawned all over this movie. One of them gave the movie a 10/10 and he said he's never given a movie a 10/10 before. That same guy also says that this sequel is better than the original.

Now... I find all of that pretty hard to believe, but that sounds really good.

Did Hollywood accidentally make a sequel to a decades old movie that doesn't suck?

How long will it stay making money

Yeah I'm terrible at spelling at times and I get lazy spelling but sometimes it auto corrects spelling the wrong way...its why I turn of auto correct its 'Beetle' and juice btw but Beatles is the band
In regard to staying power and profits, 100 Million Budget is cheap, all the actors are active Michael Keaton in Spider-Man known for a star as the Batman and previous Bee, active strange things Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara active on tv, Monica Bellucci somewhat active and larger international following in Italian French circles 90s model career, Willem Dafoe another huge name, Jenna Ortega one of the new Gen-Z stars horror movies and 'Wednesday Addams' a lot of 'Star Power'

What else is coming in the next few days and weeks The Wild Robot Dreamworks animation, Megalopolis film written, directed, and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, Hellboy The Crooked Man, Joker Folie à Deux.

its not 250 Million like other Marvel, Disney, WB productions

Worldwide it seems to get a PG13 or 12A rating for moderate horror gore, some violence, sexual referneces, drug references, language, suitable for children aged 12 and up.

I don't see much competition. Joker 2 might do well, but I'm not going to see it and I don't know anybody who's looking forward to it.

It's actually spelled Betelgeuse, so I'm not going to worry too much about spelling if Hollywood isn't.

$145,400,000 Worldwide opening weekend on $100 Million budget.

I don't think China has anything to worry about and their 3 or 4 films in the worldwide Top 10 probably aren't going anywhere with this one, as I don't see this one making half a billion before it's out of theaters. Could have been a different story if the international numbers were higher, but at only $35 Million overseas it's not looking good.

It will have no problem being a money maker for WB though. By next weekend it should have easily made 2.5x the production budget.

Does this have Batman in it? Wasn't he supposed to be retired?
And Spock's mom? Who was also in Alien? And Kevin's mom, from Home Alone?

Wait. 36 year span of same actor playing same role?

Yes. Michael Keaton is in it. I haven't heard anything about him being retired. He played Batman again in two roles recently.

Winona Rider is in it. Catherine O'Hara is in it.

That might be it for the returning cast though.

President from Ferris Bueller hasn't gotten any roles since the pedobear charges I believe. Not sure if he's still alive or not, actually.

Would have loved to see Gina Davis return. Even if it meant Alec Baldwin did too.

Is it too brilliant that Beetlejuice chopped his wife into pieces? Danny DeVito, playing the janitor from Hell, accidentally breaks open the boxes holding the wife's many pieces, which then reassemble to make one very angry ex-wife. A brilliant PG-13 movie for the whole family.

Beetlejuice's ex-wife, Delores, is the #1 problem ( "Monica Bellucci's Delores is a big, dull waste" ) in The 5 Biggest Problems Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Needed To Exorcise
https://www.looper.com/1658890/beetlejuice-2-biggest-problems/

Monica Bellucci is director Tim Burton's mate. Burton's previous mate, Helena Bonham Carter, appeared in seven of his movies. It is not precisely nepotism but it is pretty damn close. Kind of like when the actor playing Deadpool had his wife and children playing Deadpool characters. Since he was also the executive producer, he not only gets paid excessively for being an actor and producer but he keeps some of those $100,000,000 of Hollywood studio budget in the family.

Read the other 4 problem at: https://www.looper.com/1658890/beetlejuice-2-biggest-problems/

Personally, I don't think the people making these movies deserve to be paid even $1.00 for the crap they make.

Anybody posting here about the wife of Tim Burton and failing to notice Lisa Marie, might be gay.

I watched this tonight. An enjoyable film, and the audience seemed charged. Sign on the door stated there were no coda at the end of the film, so I didn't stay too long. But at least stay until the scroll of actor credits roll.
One thing about older actors - they can play dead people just fine. Enjoyable cast.
Does anybody else find it interesting that for the original, Keaton did not have poster billing, as the title character?

No. She is most DEFINITELY not a dude. That's why I try to be good about asking questions clarifying things sometimes to make sure I'm getting the gist.

Hasn't our dude been married to like 5 or 6 chicks by now? I know you two don't care for each other, but I think you're stretching a bit on this one. While no Lisa Marie, Helena Bonham Carter was quite a looker back in her day too and I honestly couldn't tell you if seeing that on a Google search sparked an ancient memory that I knew they were married at one point or if it just makes sense that they would given how weird they both are and their work history together.

I tend to purposefully know as little as I possibly can about any Hollywood relationship stuff, and right now I probably know more about Tim Burton's love life than any other person in Hollywood just because of this conversation. If I were 10 years younger than I am, I probably would have no idea who Lisa Marie was.

But thanks for clarifying what you meant.

Haha... I had to think a minute why the hell the movie theater would hang a sign telling you that there wasn't a coda.

Then it dawned on me...

People have been so conditioned now over the years from Marvel/DC movies I bet at least half the audience of a Rom-Com now sits around and waits for a coda just so they don't miss anything everyone else will be talking about at work on Monday.

I could see how this would become a huge annoyance to the theater employees who have a limited amount of time to clean up after the pigs in between showings. They probably get 5 minutes less time to work on that stuff now because everybody just sits their asses in the seats until the screen finally goes black.

That might not even be a chain thing at whatever theater house you go to and it could have been a clever employee. After I'd been working there for a week or two and sussed out the situation, that's the type of thing that I'd fix by printing off signs on the copier and hanging by all the doors myself as an hourly employee.

My motto's always been to beg for forgiveness later rather than ask for permission first when it comes to decisions like these at work. I like to top from the bottom since in nearly every case in my life I've been notably smarter than my manager. I don't win them all, and sometimes I've even gotten myself into a bit of trouble if I misjudged them and they had an unexpected reaction. But usually it works out great and I have no problem letting the manager take credit as long as it serves me... which was the catalyst of the idea in the first place.

I've never once had a male manager rip me a new asshole for going over their head like that. Never even had one back out whatever change I'd made after we had a discussion about the idea and the results that I've already gotten by doing it without their permission. Especially once they know I have no desire for any credit for a good idea. Just stay out of my way, leave me the F alone and let me do my job and go babysit the people that need to be babysat and I'll make you look good.

It's only been a small percentage of female managers who have had adverse and nonsensical reactions to this. And that's just the difference between somebody who has a lot of self-confidence vs. somebody who is just pretending they are self-confident. If they actually knew me, instead of being wrapped up in a cocoon of their own neurosis 24/7, they'd know that I wasn't a threat to them because I have zero ambition of being a manager at all, let alone taking their spot. The worst of it isn't when they lose their shit and we end up yelling at each other. It's when they they shoot themselves in the foot by backing out the changes just to spite me. Great. Now I have to do a bunch of nonsense work because my manager is an emotion-driven idiot. Oh well... Just have to just bide my time until the next one comes around and try it again.

Props to the kid who put those signs up if that's what actually went down.

Twisters had a very poor overseas but why ??? maybe no Bill Paxton who kind of had 'Star-Power' also a lot of cultures don't get the whole Hurricane, Tornado thing, I know they have Typhoons in Japan or Vietnam, Philippines the Japanese have storms and tsunami but that is not a big cinema market anyways...Beetlejuice what kind of staying power will the remake of a 1988 movie have

1988 is also a big generation cap

Bryan Singer X-Men is a 2000 American superhero film
X-Men First Class 2011
the R-rated dark comedy Deadpool is a 2016 American superhero
Deadpool & Wolverine is 2024
...each generation updated

same with the Batman's
Adam West and Cartoons
Burton Batman
Christopher Nolan Batman
Justice League...Snyder Cut vs. Joss Whedon

same with the Spider-Mans
Bond
Harry Potters etc

but there are generations gaps that work and they did pull it off with 'Top Gun' remake

I think maybe it struggles overseas, not sure
WB seems to have no intention of advertising it overseas and says it is already going on digital for Streaming at end of September or in October...which will kill chances of cash in overseas cinema markets

the cash and numbers Beetlejuice...Australia - $2.6M, Spain - $2.5M, Italy - $1.7M
Brazil - $1.2M
the French and British numbers should be much better when they come in

Beetlejuice another factor I did not consider '1988' a bunch of people behind the Iron Curtain might have missed it and don't get the Western Nostalgia

Calypso music

Harry Belafonte hated Trump but he had catchy tunes including for Beetlejuice - Day-o ...the Banana Boat Song...the Caribbean mix a Scottish Jamaican mother and an Afro-Jamaican father, and his father was the child of an Afro-Jamaican mother and a Dutch-Jewish performed in many genres, including blues, folk, gospel...I know Blues and Rock started to be popular in Eastern Europe as kids copied and smuggled old cassette tapes.

a call and response work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas

There was the Queen movie 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in recent years and maybe people know Freddie Mercury of Queen improvised his famous call and response at Live Aid from the beginning of Day-O.

with the internet people can now catch up with pop culture they missed from whatever part of the world

meanwhile Romulus hit $100M in China! ...compared to Alien Romulus in France ($11.3M) and Mexico ($8.2M).

Yeah good call there, that star Betelgeuse red 'Alpha Orionis' in the constellation of Orion, usually the tenth-brightest star in the night sky ...the name is a weird mix of Latin and Arab mythology and might be an incorrect spelling of other names which evolved, it seems to link to fighting or storms or wars or planet Mars that derives its name from a Roman war god, but there are Hindu and Chinese and Persia and Japanese interpretations for the star that were different but similar, there was also a French Oil Tanker and two US World War II vessels, which had the name 'Betelgeuse'.
The star they think it might blow up and radiate near by systems some time, but you never get a straight answer even at NASA they don't know.

Money easily recouped. $264,406,079 worldwide after 10 days, or a profit above $16 Million already. Unfortunate that it doesn't appear they'll get much money overseas for this though. Really strange seeing the difference between the Domestic and International take on this one sitting at 71%/29%.

We did a Beetlejuice Marathon this weekend in which the second movie was shown first. The conclusion? The second Beetlejuice movie stinks, while the first is a classic. Oh, and despite the heavy makeup, Michael Keaton who plays the titled character, is showing his wrinkled age. Ghosts are not supposed to get older, but that ghost has.

That isn't any different than what I figured I'd say about the sequel when they first announced it. A lot of other people who have seen it say otherwise. I'll reserve my own judgement until I see it. My old man is going to take my brother to see it later this week, so I'll have more input and he and I agree on most things when talking cinema.

I have seen enough stupid people or those lacking self-control dying early to know either of those traits are deadly. Take for example a particular stupid person lacking self-control who is alive only because of divine intervention (that’s what he says):

Trump ignored warnings from Secret Service about security risks posed by golfing

Soon after Donald Trump became president, authorities tried to warn him about the risks posed by golfing at his own courses because of their proximity to public roads. Secret Service agents came armed with unusual evidence: not suspect profiles or spent bullet casings, but simple photographs taken by news crews of him golfing at his private club in Sterling, Va.

They reasoned that if photographers with long-range lenses could get the president in their sights while he golfed, so too could potential gunmen, according to former U.S. officials involved in the discussions who, like most others interviewed for this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity.

But Trump insisted that his clubs were safe and that he wanted to keep golfing, the former officials said. These preferences posed problems for his protection that former Trump aides, Secret Service officials and security experts said have only intensified in the years since he left the White House, as his security detail shrank and agents no longer maintained as extensive a perimeter guarding his movements. A Trump spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

The cartoon wasn't a sequel. It was its own thing.

The two main characters were never in the cartoon and nobody in the cartoon ever once referenced Alec Baldwin or Gina Davis. It was a story from an alternative universe before anybody outside of true Sci-Fi nerds ever talked about such a thing.

Also, they made Beetlejuice a good guy and he and Lydia were best friends. Not the behavior you'd think a teenage girl would be displaying towards a literally crusty, horny old man who who would have put her in shackles as his sex-slave wife.

Beetlejuice was more of a supernatural cartoon clone of Dr. Who. than a sequel to Beetlejuice the movie. It has more in common with Rick and Morty than it does Beetlejuice the movie.

The people at Screen Rant probably hate the movie because they hate Jenna Ortega for not pushing all their woke bullshit. That's alright. She'll still be making lots of money long after they're all laid off and Screen Rant finally folds.

You are fond of this cartoon. Are you young enough to have watched the Beetlejuice cartoons as a child? I'm from the Yogi Bear, Rocky and Bullwinkle generation. When the shows were new, not reruns decades later.

I could take it or leave it. My brothers and I didn't care much for the cartoon because it had nothing to do with the movie. I remember watching it though so it probably came on at a time when the stuff on the other channels was less interesting.

I saw the movie when I was a child. I think the cartoon came out when I was in Jr. High and ended after I was in high school.

Went to a Jellystone Park all the time when I was a kid, so Yogi Bear was a big part of my childhood. Never was much of a fan of things that Hanna Barbara did outside of that though just because it looked so cheap compared to the cartoons I was watching on Saturday mornings and the Disney Afternoon, Thudercats, The Real Ghostbusters, etc.

The cartoon had a really cool intro though. You could tell they put a lot of money into that vs. the regular animation. I think I heard that Tim Burton made that intro, but I might be misremembering things.

So the cartoon, I read it was broadcast on ABC and Fox but perhaps did not have a worldwide following

it had a DVD region 1 release

but South America, Japan, China, Russia/India, Thailand and Europe are different regions, region 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 region codes

I touched on this vaguely in the other thread not realizing you went into this thread with some specifics about KPOP. Now I understand why you mentioned KPOP over there.

My reply to you over there was that I thought KPOP could have a decent Top 10 showing over here depending on the group and how weak the US Box office was that weekend, although it would never get 1st place for the weekend here.

Beetlejuice never had an international audience back when it was released, so outside of Korea and Japan and several other Asian countries I think that's the same phenomena happening here. Had the people of Brazil been waiting 30 years for a sequel to Beetlejuice, some KPOP band would not have taken 1st place in Beetlejuice's 3rd weekend.

And even though I've heard that this Transformers is actually a good movie, I don't think anybody really cares anymore. That's another brand they need to bury in the ground for 20 years before they make another sequel.

I wonder what the people who decided next year's box office is going to be better than the pre-Covid days are thinking.

2024 is terrible compared to 2023. 2023, as bad as it was, was still a big improvement over 2022 as the world was going back to sanity. 2024 should have been better, but people are burned out on all the woke bullshit and with the economy being in the shit tubes they don't want to take that gamble that money better spent elsewhere might pan out to be an enjoyable movie experience. It didn't stop them from going to see obvious blockbusters like Daredevil & Wolverine and Dune II, but it's all the other movies that have suffered from it.

Only two movies broke a billion and besides Dispicable Me 4 nothing else is even close. Two of the top 3 movies are franchise cartoons made for kids.

I look at the current Top 20 list in the world, and I can pick out at least 3 movies that would have done more than half a billion worldwide and bumped the 3 Chinese movies out of the Top 10 in any other year outside of the Covid lockdown years. If this were 2023 and the exact same movies had come out, Hollywood would have had at least 7 or 8 movies that broke half a billion.

6ixStringJack, you are exactly like Trump. Both of you talk too much and know too little. The real explanation for Hollywood's 2024 Death Spiral was written in 2005:

Hollywood’s Death Spiral, Part 2
Are movie theaters facing extinction?

By Edward Jay Epstein | Aug 01, 2005 9:13 AM

https://slate.com/culture/2005/08/hollywood-s-death-spiral-part-2.html

The $64 billion question in Hollywood these days is what to do about collapsing the boundary between a movie’s theatrical and video release—the so-called video window. Gradually, this window has shrunk from six months to four months—and, in the case of many children’s movies—to three months. Even worse, DVD releases are often announced while a movie is still playing in the multiplexes. As a result, more moviegoers now wait to buy or rent a movie on DVD, which leads to shorter theatrical runs and a fall in worldwide theater attendance, which in turn puts more pressure on the studios to shorten the window even further.

This death spiral was set in motion by the studios themselves about four years ago. The decision to shorten the video window did not proceed from a new technological development—such as TV in the 1940s or the video cassette in the 1970s—or a change in popular taste. As a top studio executive explained to me, “It was a voluntary decision made for purely financial reasons by the major players. It was done to satisfy quarterly profit goals, nothing more, nothing less.” In short, the studios changed their business model so that they could opportunistically sell DVDs, which, after all, are a conventional retail product like soap or toys.

The Video Window is now 1 month between theater and streaming.

Attendance at the theater will continue to decline because the same movie can be seen at home for free. Streaming services will charge exactly the same price regardless of how many movies you watch in a month. To watch one movie per month or thirty per month cost exactly the same, which means the second to the thirtieth movies are free. Theaters charge you separately for all thirty movies. And charge you for each person watching! Streaming services do NOT charge extra when more than one person is watching the same movie at your home.

Bonus for watching movies at home: no obnoxious, smelly, rude, stupid strangers making noises. No long drive to the theater. No overpriced popcorn and soft drinks.

I've shown you countless examples of the exact opposite being the truth. 4 years ago the media couldn't stop talking about how movie theaters and the entire model was dead during Covid lockdowns, and it's still fine despite writers/actors strikes and, the covid lockdowns, a very light 2024 slate and a bad economy. If movie theaters and the entire model was going to break, Covid would have broke it. That didn't happen. We'll see if after a slow 2024 the box office continues to build on its 2023 numbers next year.

And the prices continue to go up all the time, and now they're introducing viewing with ads for people who don't pay double price for the high tier that still is ad free. And the longer the streaming wars plays out, the more those streaming bills are starting to look more expensive than just having Cable TV used to be. I would not expect the streaming market to look anything in 10 years like it does now. It looks nothing like it did 10 years ago either. Who knows what the future or final form of streaming content will look like or how that will keep people from going to the theater at that point in time. But examples like Five Nights at Freddies which grossed well over $300 Million on a $25 Million budget were released on Peacock streaming the very same day it was released in theaters. I'm sure a lot of people watched it at home, but it still made a shocking amount of money in the box office and defied all of the low expectations that had been set up for it pre-release.

I feel you on that one. Most of the time my movie theater going experience was neutral. But the amount of times I've walked out of one feeling great are far outweighed by the times where the experience was ruined by idiots that think they're sitting in their own living room and anybody cares what their opinions are in the middle of a movie everybody else in the room paid to see.

Remember drive-in theaters? It's hard to find one nowadays. I fondly remember watching Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People with my parents and sisters at the drive-in. Banshees are scary! Lawrence of Arabia? 2001 A Space Odyssey? I saw those at the drive-in but I couldn't take my great grandchildren to a drive-in theater. Walk-in theaters are drifting in the same direction as the drive-in. Toward extinction since there are far better ways to watch movies, assuming you have the money to buy an 8K TV. Someday everybody will have one. When that day comes, walk-in theaters will go where drive-in theaters went.

It's not going to knock off any of those Chinese movies from the Worldwide Top 10 list, but $404,200,134 worldwide ain't bad.

I wonder though... It's still showing in 3,500+ theaters right now. Halloween's still a bit away, but if it's playing in enough theaters it might get some more interest again in the back half of the month.

But nah... I don't think so. I don't think it's got too much going for it internationally anymore, and it only grossed $10 Million last weekend and $20 Million the entire week. It seems to have a pretty good hold in the box office, staying under -40% loss week to week which is good, but I think there would have to be a pretty huge Halloween bump to get this over the finish line of $480 Million to overtake the 3 Chinese movies and move into 7th place behind Kung Fu Panda 4.

Beetlejuice x2 is in 10th place worldwide right now. If a single movie comes in and knocks those Chinese movies down the list than Bx2 doesn't even get a 10th place finish for the year.

B2 is at just under $425 Million worldwide now.

It needs $42 Million to beat Pegasus 2, $51 Million to beat The Successor and $55 Million to beat YOLO.

I don't think it's going to do any of that, but maybe Halloween helps out. It made over $500k yesterday so it's beating Joker 2, but that isn't saying much. Smile 2's Thursday preview night pulled in 5 times what B2 did yesterday.

13 days have passed since my last post...

$442 Million worldwide today. 10th place in the 2024 Worldwide Box Office. It's been there for quite a while, though I don't think I mentioned it before. It knocked off the Bad Boys movie for 10th place right around $400 Million.

https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-records/worldwide/all-movies/cu
mulative/released-in-2024

B2 is now only $24 Million behind Pegasus 2.

I don't think it's going to get there. That's a shame.

Any Hollywood movie that comes out for the rest of 2024 and beats the 3 Chinese movies is going to bump B2 off the list while the three Chinese movies remain. Had B2 been able to make another $25 Million, all Hollywood would need to do is have one more $500 Million movie and it would at least knock off one of the 3 Chinese flicks. Now it still needs 2 more to do that.

I was hoping B2 could do this, especially when it was clear Joker 2 wasn't going to come close. From the beginning of this year I always figured that Joker 2 would do at least $500 Million no matter the budget or how bad it was. That was completely unexpected.
