She being the First Officer, or Executive Officer of Serenity, Mal's right hand. Played by Gina Torres.

It would be nice to include at least one instance from the series, and also from the Cinema release Serenity.

I think my favorite is in response to Wash's "Isn't that like science fiction" she points out "You live in a spaceship, dear" in Objects in Space.
But one runner up would be her exchange with Mal in Out of Gas about "the ugly one."
For Serenity, I always get the weirdness sense during her scene with River watching the wannabe "heroes" in the bank robbery on Lilac. I oft wonder if this was a result of the editing, or the director, but I think Gina pulled it off well.

What are your favorites?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Maybe the deleted scene from the pilot, as she explains to Simon why Mal named his ship Serenity. "Once you've been in Serenity, you never leave. You just learn to live there."

From the BDM, her stoic reply to Kaylee, "Wash ain't comin'," and then the overhead shot of her reloading her mare's leg.

"Can I have your share," to Mal, in The Train Job.

Zoe seems to have a meatier role, more gumption in the first aired episode. This might be the ep with the greatest quantity of good lines for Zoe. Later eps may have diluted her dominance.
Interesting that she addresses her husband Mal "Sir?"

In the movie, when they're back on the ship after that first encounter with Reavers, and Zoë questions Mal about kicking that guy off the mule. Not the wittiest dialogue in the franchise or anything, but it feels really human to me. It shows that just because Zoë is an excellent second-in-command, she has ideological differences with Mal. Plus I like that we get a little taste of the kind of captain Zoë would be.

Also, 100% off-screen and we don't know what the exchange would have been exactly, but I like to imagine what happened in Out of Gas when Zoë woke up on the shuttle with Wash, Simon, and River. Her last waking moment is jumping in front of the blast, and then next thing she knows, she's on a team that's left half the crew behind, to probably never see them again. And she'll have none of it.

Zoë is my favorite character.

I just giggled thinking about Zoe waking up....from her Honeymoon! Because that's where Gina was for the episode. Totally broke the 4th wall there, sorry.

In reviewing all quotes listed here, it dawns on me that Zoe is the most all-encompassing character, the most Renaissance Man of the whole bunch.
