It's a hard pick for me, because they're all awesome, but probably I'd have to say War Stories. It had a ton of action and was hilarious. What about yours?

I always tell people it's whichever episode I've watched most recently. I guess that means the pilot right now--my niece and I made my sister watch it last night. (I let my niece borrow the first two discs over the weekend. She went out and bought the season immediately.)

Yet again I'll put in the standard lonely vote for 'Safe'. The Simon/River scenes are so transcendently beautiful, including "you gave up everything to find me, but then you found me broken", River dancing, and especially the rescue scene where Simon was prepared to give his life for River, and from which our Big Damn Heroes were born.

Also, it's the episode where the crew first truly becomes family, it has flashbacks, it has cows - what's not to love?

yes, but I notice your quote: "so this is what going mad feels like" comes from Jaynestown.

The Jayne song alone brought tears to my eyes.

However, the banter going on when Mal meets his "wife" in Mrs. Reynalds is pretty hysterical.

They are all very good and the more you watch them all the more you realise how little snippets of dialogue relate to the series as a whole, making the show even better!!! However for pure TV pleasure I must say :
OBJECTS IN SPACE is perhaps my favourite. It played so well on the mystery of River and introduced one of the best characters; 'Jubal Early'

If you put a gun to my head, I'd have to go with Objects In Space.

i can't beleive it!!! only one person put "OUT OF GAS" on their list (way to go ANNIE). Come on!!! "Out of Gas" is the first episode where you really see how the crew of serenity is becoming a family and where they start to realize it as well.

AND I QUOTE:

Mal: "you all will be here when I wake up?"
(everyone nods)
Mal: "good"
---snore---

not to mention the flashback scenes that tell us the beginnings of the crew. (ha ha: wash had a mustache!!!) you see how the whole crew came together and you see how Kaylee joined the crew ("sorry captain...She's hot for engines") it's just such an awesome episode!!! there are just soo many of the great firefly moments we travelers crave for on this episode!!! Not to mention a big battle wound for Mal!!!

so here's my list of favs with the first one being the best:
1) "OUT OF GAS" (If you don't know why yet, you ain't been payin' no attention)
2) "OUR MRS.REYNOLDS" (does this really need an explanation -- it's just plain awesome!!!)
3) "OBJECTS IN SPACE" (you get to see River's perspective on things which is gorram interestin')

This is a good land. And we shall call it .... this land.

I know I have done this before on another thread. I always differentiate between favorite and best. Great films can have enormous impact but not be much fun. Favorite films are the ones you want to watch over and over, because you love them.

So it is hard to argue that Out of Gas, Serenity and Objects are not the best.

But the question here is favorite - I love War Stories, Our Mrs Reynolds, Serenity and Jaynestown in that order.

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Out of Gas - without a doubt.

What's not to love? I love the way the past present and future all exist in one episode, distinguished by a different colour tone. Kaylee's introduction to the crew is wonderful. The moment in which Inara tells Mal that he doesnt't have to die alone to which he replies "Everybody dies alone" is so moving. Mal bleeding to death alone on the ship - that in itself is a interesting story, but the fact that we get to see how the crew came together is a shiny bonus

Nothing can beat this

Oh and Nathan Fillion happens to agree with me on this one.
Morena Baccarin's favourite is Heart of Gold

I'd just thought I'd mention it since they answered the question at the Birmingham screening Q&A

Hmmm.... my favorites (in no particular order) are:
*Objects in Space, because of the unique perscpective we get from River, the beautiful relatiosnhip building in the teaser, the equaly beautiful bu subtle character interaction in the closer, Juabl Early's delightful comments. Also, it was nice to see how much everyone (even Jayne, to an extent) does appreciate River. I love River's line in the teaser: "It's just an object. It's not what you think." That was a visually stunning scene, seeing the branch and the flower petals.
* Serenity, if for no other reason than the screligious way Mal walks in and kills the fed adgent when he has a gun to River's head. And Wash's dinosaurs. I can't see why Fox disliked this pilot. It was an excellent introduction. A bit preachy at time, but still excellent.
* Our Mrs. Reynolds, I read somewhere that Joss considers this the best script he's ever written, and I can see why. The humor was excellent. It was delight, watching all the characters react to Mal's accidental bride. I'm a big Mal/Inara fan, so this episode was a real treat for me. The relationship building in this episode was so subtle and natural, a perfect part of the plot without being overpowering.
* Ariel, just because it was so tight in terms of polit. Everything fit together so well.

The great thing about this series is that there's not a singel episode I dislike. There are exceptional episodes, but no episodes that make me want to turn the TV off and run away.

Well ...

When I was all alone in my Fireflydome and wasn't tainted by knowing what the rest of the world thought, "Out Of Gas" was by far my favorite episode. But there are very few episodes that couldn't in some way be my favorite... I'm just not good at picking favorites.

I can, however, say this for sure. "Shindig" is without a doubt my least favorite episode. Even though I watch it as religiously as the others, it bores me because everything has this dull, obvious, "irony" to it that is completely mind numbing. "I get how they do it I just ain't gettin the why." "I'll take on the job." I love the scene with Banning, Destra, Kavot and Zell (Please pardon the spelling), as well as other scenes. But the line "He's being toyed with" is just nerve raking, and if the line "Besides, why would I want to leave Serenity" were filled with any more blatant, intentional cheesy irony I would vomit and probably hate the show. It is that bad.

Yeah cool things happen, but I can barely make it through the episode. And after reading Jane Espenson's editorial comments (with the exception of a very classy few) in "Finding Serenity" I can understand why it is so fake.

Well, like most (if not all) Browncoats, I pretty much love all the episodes. Put a gun to my head, and I'd have to choose Objects in Space. It's different than the others, more cerebral, with fantastic writing, by far the most interesting guest character, and I love seeing everything through River's POV.

But really, my favorite episode depends on my mood. If I'm in the mood for comedy, Our Mrs. Reynolds or Jaynestown; more serious drama, Out of Gas or Objects in Space; action, Ariel or Heart of Gold.

Let's face it though: one of the reasons Firefly is so great is that each episode shares plenty of all these things. I could no more pick a true "favorite" than I could tell you Yosaffbridge's real name.

THE HERO OF CANTON!

THE ONE THEY CALL JAAAAYNE!

It still makes me laugh, even after the 10th viewing! More one-liners than you can shake a herring at! The line, "next time, let's all go to a crappy town where I'm the hero!", is my personal favourite one-liner of all time!

Also, the Mal and (drunken) Wash entrance onto Serenity, when they are met by Zoe, is brilliant! Wash's giggling fits are comedy timed to perfection.

I realise that it lacks clever plotting and all that jazz, but let's be honest here; who expected there to be a statue of Jayne in the centre of town when they first watched the episode? Now that is clever plotting!

It is also a mainline station for the less obvious characters to develop their own subplots; so we get extension lines built into Kaylee snogs Simonsville and we meet the Emotion Express to Jaynestown. This kind of episode may not further the darker plot elements, but it lets you identify with the humanity of the characters and hence you like them more!

It's also the best episode to watched pissed!

Let's all go to a crappy town where i'm the hero!

Like has been mentioned, there's not a single episode I dislike. One of my favorite moments is in Trash with Mal just sitting in the middle of nowhere completely nude. And he doesn't even care! I also love how you see the outcome of the job first, then the episode comes full circle and catches up with the first line. Mal boarding the ship naked in front of his crew is priceless!

Also, I love Shindig.

In order, I think it'd have to be:
1) Out of Gas
2) The Message
3) Serenity
4) Our Mrs. Reynolds or Trash

Out of Gas and The Message get me kind of emotional. Out of Gas of course gives so much backstory to the ship and its crew, and gets me endeared to all the different characters. Plus that, the progression of the episode from start to finish is just done so well. I mean, it's darting around all over the place to explain where each character comes from, explain the ship's problem, and the present with Mal semi-daydreaming while trying to get the catalyzer into the engine. You also get to see the level of loyalty the crew has for one another...

Anyway, before I drone on about that, The Message was good for many of the same reasons, but it also hints at one of my favourite things about the series. You hear all these references to the war, but there are only two direct battle sequences. Everything else is about the long-term effects of war on the soldiers who fight them. From Mal's wish to push further on out in the system, to small things like Zoe and Mal cutting into their apples. But Tracey was like that all over: he was never a fighter, and even though he survived the war it still killed him.

Serenity and Our Mrs. Reynolds I enjoy mostly because they were my initial introductions to the series. Our Mrs. Reynolds and Trash I liked since Saffron is by far my favourite guest character.

But yeah, like what most other folks here already said, I love all the episodes. Objects in Space used to be at the bottom of my list (though I still liked it) until I rewatched it. Now I think Train Job might be at the bottom... and I still think it's a wonderfully-done episode. KF

Hey now, I mentioned The Message, and I'm still at odds on whether I'd place it in the #1 or #2 slot {^^}. I thought it did an incredible job of showing how war affects a man in the long-term--not just through the fighting, but through the psychology of loss. And, after reading the script for Dead or Alive, I see some of the better elements there were worked into The Message.

A lot of folks point out the plotholes in it but, meh, I'm just not seeing 'em. KF

LMAO! I love that! Now only if i actually had the DVD....

Anyways this is a hard decision of wich is my fav. Jaynetown is pretty funny.

I think right now I'm gonna have to say the one where they rob the hospital and Jayne gets greedy trying to turn over Simon and River to the feds. The Hands of Blue guys in this episode are just really crazy. Only thing I'm really wondering about those guys is why did they kill every one that talked to River? For what reasons?

Anyways that's the episode I'm liking the most at the moment. I love them all though. I got a Birth Day coming up soon. I'm gonna buy the DVD for sure. well unless they do another marathon so I can just tape them all.... Didn't think about doing that earlier...

Comedically my favorite HAS to be "Our Mrs. Reynolds." Everyone, especially Nathan Fillion, did a great job with the comedic timing in that one.

Otherwise I have to go with "Heart Of Gold" because it delved deeper into the tension between Mal and Inara as well as focusing on Mal himself.

My favorite for comdey is "Trash" I love it when Mal calls Saffron (or whatever you want to call her) Yosafbridg. That cracks me every time!! Pretty much everything said in that episode is perfect!
And my favorite for seeing the friendship between the crew is "Out of Gas" That one, to me, is the most stirring one because you see how much the crew really cares for each other even if can't say it. And, its just awesome to see how they got all together.
I like "War Stories" because of the action. And because you get a hint of what River is capable of.

"Ariel" and "Jaynestown" are hands-down my favorites, and then "Objects in Space". I'm a huge Tam fan, I'll admit, and Jaynestown was just hilarious.

I really do have to say, though, that "Out of Gas" is the most well-done episode. The filming and the cuts were seamless, which really made the episode amazing.
