I was revisiting the dvd's and just noticed a couple things for the first time, wondered how many others spotted this also. In "War Stories," there's Book's line about Simon not having shot anyone yet, and Mal reacts by starting to laugh, only to reach up to his chest in pain. Obviously, he's reacting to the damage left by Niska's torture device, which to me is a very nice acting touch on Nathan's part which I just never caught before. Along those same lines, at the end of the ep, Jayne smacks Mal in the exact same spot before he sits down to eat the soup, which is quite humurous when you remember the wound Mal is still nursing.

Another interesting moment comes in "Trash" when Yolanda/Saffron is confronted by her former husband and Mal draws a gun from the flower bouquet to stop her from shooting him. I never knew what he said before, but this time it was clear that he calls her "YoSaffBridge" which of course is a combination of all three of her names. The funny thing is when I checked the subtitles to see if I was correct, it just says he's speaking Chinese. But I think I'm right about this.

Anywho, nothing earth-shattering, just thought I'd pass this along.

"Yolanda?"

CANTONHEROINE

There's heaps of places where the subtitles get it wrong. I'm especially fond of the one in the message where Jayne's reading his Ma's letter, and says that 'Mattie is still sick with the damp lung.'
The subtitler took this as one word (damplung) and said it was Chinese.

If you take note on the boards around here, you'll see that pretty much everyone call's Mal's bride 'YoSaffBridge'. It wasn't only noticed - it stuck.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't catch the YoSaffBridge thing myself until my friend pointed it out to me. It was hilarious. Also in Trash, if you watch real close when Mal and YoSaffBridge are getting away in the shuttle, you can see her take Mal's gun out of his holster.

I love Nathan's attention to detail, like when Joss praises him in the Objects in Space commentary. Just so solid.

“When peace comes to mean the absence of conflict on the one hand, and when conflict with an unjust and racist political order is a moral imperative on the other, then it is not difficult to understand that the better class of human beings are, in fact, deeply committed to disturbing the peace and creating conflict.”

wow you never knew Yo/Saff/Bridge? Only the hottest, sociapath woman with a split personality, on the planet :) Yep that's what's so good about Firefly is the continuity and attention to detail. Best example is 'compression coil'. Mentioned by Kaylee in the pilot and a few other episodes only for it to blow in 'OoG', half way through the season.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

My personal favorite subtitle flub is in "The Message."

After Tracey is shot and then grabs Kaylee coming out of her room, he yells, "Gorramit, Mal!

The subtitler entered, "You're a rabbit, Mal!

I think my favourite dodgy subtitle is:

Inara: I didn't mean petty, I meant [SPEAKS GALACTIC LANGUAGE]

Mal: That's Chinese for petty.

That one has to win an award, or something...

But here is as good a place to mention the most recent small continuity detail I noticed. (Yes, after watching the series when it originally aired on FOX, watching the DVDs endlessly since they came out, I can't even begin to count the number of times I've seen these episodes...I noticed something I hadn't ever before...last week.) That black band around Jayne's calf during the opening scenes in Bushwacked is a bandage over his gunshot wound from TTJ. I'd always noticed it, just never connected it. Duh.

I'm just curious: what interested so many of you to watch the shows with subtitles? It's something that would never have occurred to me! (being an English speaker and all )

Noisy kids sometimes, and almost always if I'm listening to the commentary. But seriously, you should try it. The brain processes things a little differently when reading lines vs. hearing them. I know I personally have noticed things while reading the subtitles (even the accurate ones) that I hadn't previously. (At least, not consciously.)

With my discs it seems to be a crap-shoot whether or not the STs will be on. At first I would utter profanities and go back and go back trying to switch the gorram things off, but at last gave up and let them do as they please.

It *is* nice to have them on when playing the commentaries, an effect which surprised me and which I'd never have tried on purpose.

I turned them on after reading a suggestion here on FFF.net. Now I always do so when I have the commentary on.

Well I first decided to run the subtitles to make out some lines of dialog that I never quite knew what was being said. Case in point in Out of Gas Wash has the line "When your miracle gets here...." and I wasn't sure if he was really saying, "When your airfull gets here...." either one makes sense in context so I needed more data. Of course since some of the captioning is way off it isn't always safe to use it for that purpose.

Then ther was the time I watched Trash with the French soundtrck and Spanish subtitles. It wasn't quite as funny as I thought it might be but good clean fun none the less.

I have to use the subtitles when I'm watching late at night (my only free time ) and I don't want to wake the kids...or sometimes when I just don't get what they're saying.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I find it easier to memorize things when I can read them, plus with all the slang and tech stuff I wanted to know exactly what they were talking about and how to spell it. They really should have proofread the gorram subtitles, though. There are so many flubs, some just a little off, some WAY off. The website of translations even has a few places where they list the words mentioned as Chinese in the subtitles and says: subtitles wrongly said this was Chinese. He's really just saying "damp lung" or "YoSafBridge" or, in the case of Simon's safe word for River, speaking a different languange entirely. One that really makes me twitch is in TTJ when the train car door slides open, Zoe says "Shiny." and it's subtitled as "Shining" I know it's not that different but come on! It's going to confuse all the hearing impaired brown coats!
Anyway. I'm sure there are little details I've caught that I could share but they've all leaked out of my brain.
