Howdy everyone

I wasnt sure where to post this, but it concerns the episodes so thats why I decided here! In my acting fundamentals class at Texas A&M (Any aggie browncoats on here let me know!), and today we were assigned the duty of finding a monologue and performing it in a week.

We can do any medium and I thought what better than the Firefly/Serenity universe? Plus it could help get the message out to people in my section on somethin they're missing out on!

Any help here on any episode you know where someone speaks for longer than a minute let me know! Thanks guys!

What about Mal's 'I aim to misbehave' speech in the BDM? Not sure how long it is, but that's the first one that comes to mind.

"I love my captain."

Depending on how skilled you are at dramatic pause, this could work( I pulled together several of Mal's speeches and shifted to make transitions)
So when they terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths, and some were rich and flush with new technologies, some were not so much. Central Planets, them was formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of the Serenity. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, rescued his genius sister from some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is."I look out for me and mine. That don't include you 'less I conjure it does. Now you stuck a thorn in the Alliance's paw -- that tickles me a bit. But it also means I gotta step twice as fast to avoid 'em, and that means turnin' down plenty of jobs. Even honest ones. Put this crew together with the promise of work, which the Alliance makes harder every year. Come a day there won't be room for naughty men like us to slip about at all. This job goes south, there well not be another. So here's us, on the raggedy edge and you know what keeps us flying?Love. Can know all the math in the 'verse but take a boat in the air that you don't love? She'll shake you off just as sure as a turn in the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down...tell you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens...makes her a home.I learned something from Nandi. Not just from what happened, but from her. The family she made, the strength of her love for them. That's what kept them together. When you live with that kind of strength, you get tied to it, you can't break away. And you never want to.

I choose to rise instead of fall- U2

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Simon's monologue in the pilot describing how he was able to get River out of the Academy was the first thing that came to my mind.

For a shorter one, there's Mal's "Love keeps her in the air" speech at the end of Serenity (movie).

Oh, you sneaky browncoat, you! What a marvelous opportunity to pique interest in the 'Verse.

I, too, would vote for Simon's speech about River. It's definitely long enough, and it gives a taste of the show, laying out the whole Simon/River back-story and delineating their relationship.

Only bad thing might be if there were stealth browncoats in the audience. In that case you'd have to be as good as Simon!

I was gonna say Simon's monologue about River, but that's already been mentioned. It's one of, if not my favorite monologue EVER! I'd have to agree on Mal's "Love" monologue at the end of Serenity as well. Those are two of the greatest monologues/speeches I think I've ever heard.

What's funny is, i've actually DONE simon's river monologue as an audition. I got ensemble, but then, back then I couldnt sing, so probably wasnt the monologue's fault. Let's see if I remember it.

I am very smart.
I went to the best Medicad in Osiris, graduated top three percent of my class... finished my internship in eight months.
So when I tell you that my little sister makes me look like an idiot child, I want you to understand my full meaning.
River was more than gifted, she, she was a gift.
Everything she did: music, math, theoretical physics, even dance, there was nothing that didnt come as naturally to her as breathing does to us. She used to be a real brat about it to. I remember when she...
There was a school: a government sponsored academy, we had never even heard of it, but it had the most exciting program. The most challenging. We could have sent her anywhere, we had the money, but she wanted to go, she wanted to learn.

She was... fourteen.

I got a few letters, at first, but then I didnt hear for months. Then I got a letter that made no sense, she talked about things that never happened, jokes that we never....
It was a code. It just said

"They're hurting us. Get me out."

[opptional addendum]:
I did it with money. And luck. For two years I couldnt get near her, then I was contacted by some men, some underground movement, they said she was in danger, that the government was "playing with her brain". If I funded them, they could sneak her out in cryo, get her to Persephone, and then I could take her... wherever. I don't know what they did to her. Or why. I just have to keep her safe.

That whole spiel is from memory. The last bit is spliced together from the quick lines that Zoe and Inara have in between. It's a great monologue.

"But, these strong women characters?"

"Why aren't you asking 100 other guys why they don't write strong women characters?" -Joss Whedon.

"We take all the money we got saved right now, we could maybe buy a moderately sized gerbil." -Mal

You guys are awesome, I knew I could come here and enlist the help of fellow browncoats.

I'll try to find Mal's "I aim to misbehave" speech, but I'm not sure if it'll be long enough. As of right now Simon's speech is looking like my best bet, but I'm gonna keep thinking about other moments in the series and BDM.

Thanks again for the help ya'll, if anything else comes to mind dont hesitate to post! We dont have to have it until next week, so I'll take all the help I can get.

Ya'll have rekindled my faith in browncoats on this site, thanks!

PLATINUMMONGOOSE

How about from Buffy?
Her speech in Chosen about how every potential will become a Slayer? *Shrug* Just a thought.

Hopefully the site I'm copying this from is accurate.

"I hate this. I hate being here. I hate that you have to be here. I hate that there's evil, and that I was chosen to fight it. I wish, a whole lot of the time, that I hadn't been. I know a lot of you wish I hadn't been either. But this isn't about wishes. This is about choices. I believe we can beat this evil. Not when it comes, not when its army is ready, now. Tomorrow morning I'm opening the seal. I'm going down into the hellmouth, and I'm finishing this once and for all. Right now you're asking yourself, "what makes this different? What makes us anything more than a bunch of girls being picked off one by one?" It's true none of you have the power that Faith and I do. So here's the part where you make a choice.

So here's the part where you make a choice: What if you could have that power...now? In every generation, one slayer is born... because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman is more powerful than all of them combined. So I say we change the rule. I say my power should be our power. Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny. From now on, every girl in the world who might be a slayer will be a slayer. Every girl who could have the power will have the power power... can stand up, will stand up. Slayers... every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"

There's some good stuff in the deleted scenes from the series- Mal's long speech from OMR in particular, and Zoe's cut scenes from the pilot.

Or how 'bout Wash's dino scene from the pil.ot, for a change of pace ?

"Capt. Malcolm Reynolds:
Y'all got on this boat for different reasons, but y'all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything, I know this - they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people... better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin'. I aim to misbehave."

Not sure if you'd be interested in doing a girl's part, but one of my favorite monologues has always been River's from Objects in Space, the one that starts with "It's okay, I'm going with you," and ends with, "And I'll just fade away."

"...and I'll just fade away..."

Another possibility would be Tracy's dying speech, and the prerecorded tape that he made in "The Message." Mal and Zoe say a word or two while he's dying, but I think it'd be very dramatic.

LADYKNIGHT

I've done two differnet monolouges from Firefly for two different acting classes. I spliced together a bunch of River's dialouge from Objects in Space into a real shiny monolouge for this workshop...that my director made me cut to heck before I could proform it. It wasn't even the same peice anymore by the time I was done...but the point is the words "Firefly" and "Joss Whedon" got on the program.

Then, for a high school drama class, I used Kaylee's thing from the same eposode, where she was telling everyone what River did back in War Stories. Went to some interesting places emotionally for that one, and stayed truer to the origional...which made me happy.

They're both really good monolouges. Or, at least, so I think.

One day.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.
On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I don't think that there is one that long. What you will have to do is splice some stuff together. Find a good scene and see what will fit. It's okay to drop some of the words to make things fit.

Simon: What if he(Mal) tells you to kill me?
Zoe: (without hesitation) I kill you.

This question came up last year. At that time I was gonna put together one, combining Zoe's description of the battle of Serenity, from the deleted scene in the Pilot with The Operative's description of the same battle, from the deleted scene in the BDM. . Never got tit done, but the two speeches combine to tell the same story.

By combining those two you should be able to get a good monologue.

Simon: What if he(Mal) tells you to kill me?
Zoe: (without hesitation) I kill you.

I always wondered if most of River's dialogue on the show was essentially a monologue.

Reading Simon's words about River, even now, make my eyes water some. That you committed it all to memory is impressive.

Joss said this was the test for casting Simon - 4,000 actors couldn't do it, 2 or 3 were passable, and Sean knocked it out of the park.

The Operative did a bunch of jabbering, not sure how much you need.

Also a bunch of one-way jabbering between Mal and Badger in the Pilot, heck, Badger does a bunch of yakking all over the place.
