Every time I watch Shindig, I always wonder who that nice old man is who comes to Kaylee's aid against those mean girls. You know... the one who looks like an elderly Clark Gable? Surely I can't be the only one who noticed the resemblance? Well curiosity overcame me and I looked him up on imdb.com. His name is Larry Pennell and he has, in fact, played Clark Gable on 3 separate occasions. He's been in movies and tv since the 50s.

Anyhoo, just thought I'd share the info and give a shout out for the Nice Old Man who helped Kaylee. I wonder if Joss would have brought him back for another episode? He does like to recycle his actors...

Thank you!
I dont think ANYONE could have missed the resemblance, and I seriously doubt it was unintentional.
It's uncanny, really.

Ya know the old song about, " If you remember when"...( whatever)..." then darlin, you're MUCH older than I"?

I feel good about me. I thought I was an AULD PHART, but I only have 1 mental image of Gable, as Rhett, and it's not one of my faves.

But I did think the Old Guy looked like Buddy Ebsen, both as Jed Clampett and Barnaby Jones.

My feeling is that we are not only led to remark on the resemblance to an older Rhett Butler, but to the conclusion that the apparent philanthropist has his own agenda; or am I just a mean old man who dreams of coming to the aid of naive teens?

Well it show class that he stepped in to Kaylee's rescue. And then had her join him at the party. She actually did better than Mal did at meeting people. Well Mal has a way of meeting people with his fist. There are times it is HI larious.

I have always admired those actors who get small part after small part never making the big time, but continuing to show up here and there. Earning a living doing what the love to do. I am sure he has continued performing and will for some time.

If you ever watch John Wayne movies, he surrounds himself with the same gang of actors in almost every movie. Ward Bond comes to mind. Before he got the lead in "Wagon Train", many of you will have to Google this, but it was a popular TV show in the way back time, anyway he appeared in a lot of John Wayne movies. So some hang in there and finally get their break.

Like the gentleman who played Badger on "Firefly". He showed up on two episodes of "Medium" last year. So we may see alot more of Badger over the years. I hope as Badger.

OMG! It's funny you said that, because on imdb.com it said that he was in serveral episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies!

Don't know if you knew this, traveler, but "Badger" appeared on one of the first episodes of the X-Files, called "Fire". He was great in it, very creepy!

He was certainly evil in Medium. A sort of Jack The Riper ghost who haunts people until they go nuts. He may show up again. Ghosts never die. But these roles are good for getting in the door. You get to play some interesting people. So you get noticed. I'm sure the fine work he did on Firefly helped.

Murphey! He's brilliant, always one of my favourite characters in Firefly. I really wanted to get together a costume and go as him to a con, but I figured so few would get it.

"But you sleep like a ghost with me
It's as simple as that
So tell me I'm mad
Roll me up and breathe me in
Come to my madness
My opium den
Come to my madness
Make sense of it again."

The actor your talking about is a vetran of the screen. Him, Sam Elliot, and Tom Seleck are from the Clark Gable mold. If you ever seen the movie Midway he is the marine officier on Midway holding it together when the japs blast em. I believe all 3 are in that star studded cast. These are proffessionals at what they do. They sell their craft and you'll see them over and over through the years because their good. One thing you can't replace certain people. Good example Ron Glass has been on FF and Barney Miller top 5 tv shows of all time. You would be surprised on how many people who played in Star Trek starred in John Wayne movies including Capt. Pike.

I like smacken em.

I just saw Alan Baldwin on a show called "Day Break". A "Groundhog Day" plot, but with police and murder. These sows are getting popular. "Lost" and "Medium" and now this one. I had a hard time following it because I didn't see the first few minutes and then it started to fall together. I expect Alan will be a regular. If there is not another Firefly, I'm just posing an option, then at least the cast got recognition and are finding opportunities.

He was actually back on Medium last week and in the opening scene a.k.a. Allison's dreams/visions he was with Michael Fairman (Niska). It was weird, creepy, and cool to see them together and in the same scene. I wonder if they talked about Firefly?

Hello Whimsicalnbrainpan:

Medium is one of favorite shows. It was good see both Badger and Niska together. It seemed so strange. Like I was watching a flashback or something.

Mine too. Is it me or do you think that Bridget is the best character on that show? I love that kid!

It was weird to see the two of them in the same room together. I kept expecting them to talk about Mal.

I am glad you know about "Medium" Whimsicalnbrainpan.

I am always amazed by child actors. I could never act a when I was a child.

I am sitting here trying to remember a French movie where the main character is a four year old girl. She is in every scene and does an excellent performance. I am really angery with myself for forgetting the name of this movie. It is actually the name of the child. If I can come up with the title I will pass it on. It is a must see. I will start googling.

Oddly, I've always thought Buddy Ebsen, rather than Clark Gable, as well - maybe it's a generation thing.

Looking at his filmography, yeah it's a little sad that he never "made it big", but looking at the shows he's been in, he must have stories aplenty - he's been the "forgettable extra" in any number of high-ranked productions.

As per PurpleBelly, quite the opposite, I always viewed him as an all-but-asexual character with the "purest" of motives...being a mean old man who makes the useless people in society feel awkward, and delights in mocking them. He's more of a "fun uncle" type, than a Gable-esque lecherous hump.

Okay, I'm going to show my age here, but the actor was on several episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies, playing, of all things, a Hollywood actor who "courted" Elliemae for a while.

And yes, back in the day, he looked even more like Clark Gable.

One of Larry Pennell's finest pieces of work was on the original Outer Limits episode The Mutant. He plays a space-age shrink investigating social problems on a distant asteroid colony.....great emotional interplay with his ex-love & uncovering the truth about what is happenning there. He was also great on the tv series Ripcord.

Just noticed that a Feb 10 episode of New Girl had Janora McDuffie on, and she played Cabott, one of Banner's girls from this scene (the one next to Banner).

However, I wonder if anybody knows who are the two uncredited other girls? Names were Destra and Zelle for character, but I was wondering about the actress names.
