I'm posting this in Episodes because of how respondants would view the episodes based on their answers.

What sequence did you discover the verse?

1. Saw every aired Ep or most, or taped them and viewed when you got home, then saw Serenity in cinema?

2. Saw Serenity in Cinema, then discovered there was a TV show similar, watched the DVDs (or cable broadcasts).

3. Other (please specify).

4. Saw a few Episodes of originally aired Firefly, later saw all, then Serenity.

5. Saw some Episodes, then Serenity, then Caught all the Episodes.

6. (allowed with another choice). Got the FF DVDs before Serenity Came out.

7. Discovered the Verse after Serenity left the theaters.

"originally aired" means during Sep-Dec 2002.

I know this has been mentioned before, but I'm wondering about the current percentages among those visiting this board. I know it is an unscientific sampling.

I am sorry for not completing this post the first day - got interrupted by work. Added 4 & 5 now, will try to remember the other options I forgot.

I saw Serenity in cinema, then saw refeerence to Jewel being in a TV show with the same role name, saw it in a cable guide and watched part of the end of Ariel, watched all the remaining aired shows (mini-marathon). Then bought FF DVDs, then Serenity DVD.

Just before the movie came out, they showed Firefly on Foxtel (in Aus). I had seen previews of Serenity and thought it looked good, realised FF was before it and decided to watch.

Best decision I ever made.

I think that goes under 1, but I hadn't seen all the episodes when I saw the movie.

After the BDM had come & gone from theaters I was channel surfing & caught "Shindig" as the random rich guy got stopped by the door scanner.
Went & rented the entire series & BDM after that & watched them in order.
Then it was on to Buffy & finally Angel.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I watched from the beginning on FOX, with the exception that I missed "Bushwhacked" due to a vcr screw-up. Since they never repeated the show at all I didn't get to see that ep until the dvds were released, which I purchased immediately and watched at least four times completely in the course of a couple of months. I suppose I've seen the whole series more than twenty times so far, with about a dozen viewings of the BDM, including twice in pre-release screenings.

I knew it was Joss so there was no way I was missing even a single episode! I stayed up late to watch it after the game was over (because it was preempted a LOT).
I taped every aired episode and loaned the tape to my friends...
the tape broke down around the same time the DVDs were released so I bought multiple sets of the Firefly DVDs for friends & family.

Then I went to two of the pre-screenings for Serenity!
So Serenity 6 times in the theater...
and many more times since it's DVD came out.

Someone walked off with my old Serenity DVD but since the new edition was coming out anyway I just bought that instead of trying to track down the old one.

Because this show is awesome!

Oh and I have all the comics, and the companion books as well.

New Firefly fans should check this out: http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=2&t=15816

NVGHOSTRIDER

I had completely given up on TV with my work schedule and the lack of anything worth watching. I had caught the first season of Buffy and was less than impressed (which sucks for me because it got much MUCH better). Since I didn't have a reliable signal I watched a crapload of movies on DVD. One night I was having a few drinks and my sister said "I saw this in the theater, you gotta watch it." After watching Serenity I was quite impressed. I watched the extras and remembered hearing advertisements for the show in passin. I worked Friday nights so I completely missed it. Blockbuster had the series and I rented the first disc. I went back that evening and rented the rest of them. By the next afternoon I had watched the series and the BDM all over again. That October I began lurking about the 'net and finally joined up here a few months later.

Slightly different experience here. About a year after Firefly was cancelled, I came across the last 2/3 of Our Mrs. Reynolds during a random tv channel clickfest. This drew my interest enough to make a point of making sure I caught the next week's re-run ep, which was Jaynestown. The Jaynestown intro didn't do much for me, but after that I first heard Sonny Rhodes' rendition of the Firefly theme song, and first saw the awesome graphic with the spaceship Serenity flying over the galloping horses, at which point I was immediately hooked. It was only at the end of Jaynestown that I clued into Joss Whedon being the central force behind this series, so, given that I appreciated the cleverness of what he had done for Buffy, I opted to give this show a chance to entertain me.

Good choice!

Shortly thereafter I found this community.

Totally hooked.

I thank Joss Whedon, and I thank you all, via Haken.

#1, sort of.

I remember seeing the ads on FOX and never did catch the series while it originally aired. Some time after is was cancelled, I vaguely recalled that I might want to see Firefly, and managed to catch a few episodes floating around on one of those file sharing networks. I was addicted after watching two grainy episodes and got the series DVD. Best purchase EVAR.

Yes, "piracy" lead to an honest purchase in my case. Several purchases, if you include other related merchandise (ornaments, lunchoboxes, comics, trading cards, maps, posters, etc). If file sharing networks didn't exist, I would have missed this grand obsession.

A few years passed and I finally got to see the BDM, and bought that DVD when it was released as well. I have long since retired from "file sharing".

Other.

Never heard of the show until 2008.

Saw Serenity on some movie channel my roommate had in college (2007).

Saw DVD on the shelf at Wally World and remembered "Hey, that was a damn good movie, I should get that." (Sep 2008).

Watched DVD+ Special Features 5 times in a day (I had nothing to do during my evacuation time) (Sep 2008)

Looked up "Firefly" on IMDB. Found episodes on HULU. Watched all episodes in intended order, then again in aired order. Intended order was much better. Really liked the characters and the backstory. The fact the Mr. Whedon was inspired by The Killer Angels (one of my favorite books) made things even better. (Oct 2008)

Ordered series on DVD for Christmas, began lurking, then signed on here (Nov 2008)

I had heard of the show, but never cared. Then I saw the trailer for the movie online, researched the series, bought the box set, became an avid fan and eventually saw the movie.

Trailer - show - movie, essentially.

I haven often wondered if there is a marked difference in how the 'verse is perceived by people who saw the movie first compared to those who saw the show first.

Now I am learning about scary.

#1. I'd been watching "Buffy" for a while and when I heard Western Sci-fi from Joss Whedon, I had to give it a try. I was so amazed at "Firefly" that I was instantly hooked and watched every episode that they aired. Then, after the show was gone and I was getting over my sorrow, I was looking at trailers online when I saw one called "Serenity." As soon as I saw it, I started shouting, "They made a movie from 'Firefly'! They made a movie from 'Firefly'!" I saw the movie, loved it and heard about this site so I joined not long afterward.

I'm so glad I saw the TV series and got hooked, and I'm so glad I found this site! Thanks, Haken, and all my fellow Browncoats!

WAKEUPSOON

Mines a little different to the others ...

The story goes that on an Autumn night in 2005, my eldest brother and my dad went to the cinema to see a sci-fi film called Serenity. I, being only 13 at the time, was not allowed to go see the 15 certificate film with them. After seeing the film, dad bought the series Firefly on DVD. One Saturday evening, late on in 2005, dad was painting said older brother's bedroom (white walls, again ... how original of him) and watching the series for the first time. I wandered in to 'help' sometime during Shindig, and then hung around watching him work for the rest of the evening in order to see more. I became hooked, and finished the boxset (including extras and commentaries) within the rest of the weekend. As I recall, my dad is yet to see all the extras (baaah).

So, dad pre-ordered Serenity on DVD, and I finally got to watch the film in early March 2006. Still legally to young to watch it, I may add (still 13 ).

I watched the series and film so often that finally my dad told me to just keep them. He said they basically lived in my room anyway, so they should be now. I don't think I've ever had a bigger grin on my face since. Lol.

It was my first 15 certificate DVD that I owned.

I guess my answer would be #7. Last summer, my brother was watching the pilot episode, I walked by, and he bugged me to watch it. I didn't watch it right away, but within a couple of days (or it may have even been on the same day) I watched it out of curiosity. Over the next few days I ate up all the episodes, the movie, and most of the special features, one of which led me to this site, so I joined.

I’m old skool. I started with Dark Angel and transitioned seamlessly into Firefly. Watched every episode of Firefly as they aired, then campaigned for it not to be canceled, then campaigned for it to return, then campaigned for a movie, then watched the movie, then campaigned for a second movie, and finally gave up.

Part of the reason I posted this thread.
Also, if perception is different for those watching the originally aired sequence, out of order, with the Pilot LAST; and for those who first saw the series in sequence (on DVD or Sci Fi) rather than out of sequence.

#6) I heard of the show in the summer of 2002 and waited excitedly for the premier of the new sci-fi show. It didn't come, nor the next week or the next as it was pre-empted for baseball for two weeks or a truly awful movie the third week. So I gave up and thought it was a big mistake. Saw 5 minutes of the ending of "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when it aired on SciFi in 2005 before the movie and was instantly and totally hooked. Watched all the rest, bought the CD's, waited for the movie in 2006 and wondered why the rest of the world was oblivious to the quality and spirit that was put into this production. Still wondering on that last, since nothing I have seen to date matches the potential storytelling of the 'verse.

Although for me I saw the trailer in theater in the UK about a year before the movie came out. Then I forgot about it. I was talking to a co-worker about it and could not remember the name. Luckily for me when I searched the coming soons on a movie website it caught my eye and was premiering the next week. I got home from the BDM and searched it on the net and found out that (a) it was a Joss thing and (b) it had been a show - went right out and bought the boxed set and the kids and I watched it straight through!

I'm an original Browncoat so it's:

1. Saw every aired Ep or most, or taped them and viewed when you got home, then saw Serenity in cinema?

What got me hooked was the original TV spots that showed Serenity flying over the horses; the mixing of 2 of my fav genres was too much for me to ignore, plus Joss' name and prior success with Buffy.

Was royally pissed when it was cancelled, but felt, as I did with My So-Called Life when it was canned, that I could not do anything to bring it back. It was not until 2005 that I discovered, quite by accident, that there was a DVD series. And then found this site in 2006.

I'm still amazed that no one has picked up this show and ran with it. The fanbase continues to grow and there is no quit in the Browncoat dictionary.

MACBAKER

I guess from the choices given I'd have to pick #4 & #6.

I watched a couple of episodes during the original run. I remember "The Train Job" being one of them. At the time, I didn't really get it.

Later when the dvd set came out, I was working on a sci-fi film idea with friends in L.A. and they mentioned another project they had worked on years ago, and sets they had built that were still standing ten years later in a warehouse in north Hollywood. I wanted to check them out, and someone mentioned that this show "Firefly" had used those same sets in one of the episodes (Bushwhacked), so I went out an bought the DVD set at Best Buy.

I got the DVD set just to check out these sets for possible use in our project, but ended up watching all of them. When you watch them in order (hello FOX....Duh) the characters grow on you, and the stories are so well written that you get hooked and can't stop watching until you've seen them all. I later hooked several of my friends on the show, by loaning that set out.

Later, when Serenity came out, 8 of us were at the first screening opening day!

I've since turned at least a dozen other friends into Browncoats! I know this, because the year the movie came out on DVD, I bought and gave out 20 copies to friends for christmas, and almost everyone ended up buying the series set too.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

For me it's definately a #7. I don't watch much TV and what I do watch is educational rather than entertaining--History Channel, Descovery Channel, Animal Planet etc. (I guess I'm a snob but so much on TV is just so stupid that I gave it up)--So I missed Firefly. I remember seeing an acin the newspaper for BDM but I don't go to many movies either unless I know what to expect. Then one day, when I was in the Home Electronics Dept.,my 13 year old son showed me a copy of the BDM on DVD saying that it was a good movie. Well I consider myself to be a good modern dad who listens to his kids so I bought it and was immediately hooked. I ran out and bought the series DVD set before the week was out. Now when his mother tells me I'm obsessed, I blame him. (No, she hasn't seen it yet--pity).

TWILIGHTSEEKER

#7 for me. Last Christmas I was visiting my daughter and she had to leave me alone for the afternoon. She rummaged through her roommate's DVDs and pulled out Serenity for me to watch. I watched it three times before I left. The first time, the second with the commentary and the third to catch things I had missed the first time. After I came home I went straight to EBay and bought the Firefly box set.

I now have my good set and a loaner set. I even bought a set and donated it too my local library.

Oh yeah, I also have several copies of Serenity and am thinking of buying the BluRay version even though I do not have a BR player yet.

LEEDAVIDT

#7. i discovered the "verse" after serenity left the theatres... i was lucky enough to rent it on dvd and was hooked... even downloaded a bootleg copy off the web (mpeg1) quality, but i watched it over and over till serenity came out in stores... had no idea there was a series called firefly prior to the BDM...so i bought that after i purchased serenity...

Mal: Jayne?
Jayne: Yeah?
Mal: You want to tell me how come there's a statue of you here looking at me like I owe him something?
Jayne: Wishing I could, Captain.
Mal: No, seriously, Jayne, you want to tell me?
Jayne: Look, Mal, I got no ruttin' idea. I was here a few years back, like I said. Pulled a second-story, stole a lot of scratch from the magistrate up on the hill. But things went way South. I had to hightail it. They don't...put you on a pedestal in town square for that.
Mal: Yeah, except I'm looking at some fair compelling evidence says they do.
Simon: This must be what going mad feels like.
Wash: I think they captured him, though - you know... captured his essence.
Kaylee: Looks sort of angry, don't he?
Wash: That's kinda what I meant.

DARKJESTER

I would be a #1 - saw and taped every episode on Fox in 2002, except for Ariel - VCR malfunction, and I was out with my son that night. Got home, discovered the show didn't tape, and had my first ever panic attack: the room got dark and started spinning, I couldn't breathe... I hadn't known till just then how much I loved the show. I was convinced I would never see the episode, because only successful shows got re-runs or (like X-Files) released on tape (2002 was still very early in the DVD era!)

Watched and taped all the rest, and tried to download Ariel using P2P, but there were damn few people with copies, and I was stuck with dial-up at the time. (Didn't know about the "hello cowgirl" site)

I bought the DVDs the day after Christmas 2003, did a little dance at my desk when the BDM was announced, and went to the second round of pre-screenings in Chicago, getting to meet Summer and get her autograph.

I still have my original Fox tapes too!

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Nice to read all the stories.
I had figured the shift from all number 1's here would shift more to folks who had seen them in order, and not seen the broadcasts, but didn't know how much. This helps understand the different perspectives derived from different sequences of discovery.

Thanks for the input, keep 'em coming.

PHILYSTAR

a coworker nagged me about the film for months up to its release. i avoided both the film and show thinking it was just another star trek thing until i saw summer glau in terminator: scc. having heard she was in firefly/serenity, i decided to give the show a chance and bought the movie on the ill-fated hd dvd format. i absolutely fell in love with the film identifying with the character of mal. later i went out and bought the firefly box set, various merchandise on amazon, both firefly and serenity on blu-ray, the done the impossible dvd... yeah i'm hooked and slightly need help now !

DALILABA

I'm a #1. Channel surfing on a friday night caught Mal at the bar in The train Job. Stopped me in my tracks. When Serenity rose up behind Mal, Zoe and Jayne I was hooked. Called my friends and family and begged them to watch the show, just had a feeling the show would get buried because of the friday night time slot. Watched every episode that I could. Strongest memory was "Out of Gas".
Cut to 2005. I'm in Barnes and Noble and I see the Firefly DVD set. I was in shock at first, then I started just stopping strangers around me to explain to them that this was the best TV show ever!!
Purchased the series, went home and watched the lot. When I heard there was going to be a movie, I was thrilled. Saw the movie three times in the theater, dissappointed at the turnout{not much publicity in my opinion}. That's my story.
