I think at this point I would suppose the Guest Stars of Firefly with the most prolific careers would be Christina Hendricks (Firefly being an early credit for her), and Gregg Henry (already a veteran), and Crow. Who else are you aware of? I like the work of Gary Werntz (The Patron, Safe), Dwier Brown (Mom and Dad Save The World), Dash Riprock (from Beverly Hillbillies).

Which careers have you followed, or work have you enjoyed, before or after Firefly? Who do you think is the most prolific?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Mark Sheppard, hands down.

Supernatural, Warehouse 13, White Collar, Leverage, Prime Suspect, Doctor Who, Chuck, CSI, CSI:NY, Dollhouse, Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice, NCIS, The Middleman, In Plain Sight, Shark, Bionic Woman, Medium, 24, Monk, Las Vegas, Jake 2.0, Fastlane, Firefly, Charmed, VIP, Special Unit 2, The Chronicle, The Invisible Man, JAG, Star Trek: Voyager, The Practice, Martial Law, Sliders, Soldier of Fortune, M.A.N.T.I.S., The X-Files and Silk Stalkings.

And that's just the TV credits.

Larry Pennell ? Which character did he play ? Was he the old guy who swept in and saved Kaylee from those mean girls in Shindig ?

Absolutely. Something like "it will take far less time for the boys to get her out of her dress" IIRC. He may have been credited as "older gentleman" or something. He also later was regaled by her tales of engine repair.

A lot of that is guest starring. Gregg Henry does quite a bit of film work. And I suspect Christina has a greater recognition as a household name.

And that's exactly what you were asking about.

From your first post:

So why does me posting Mark Sheppard's guest starring credits not count?

Excellent point. My OP had not as much clarity as I thought. I do not think they do not count. Thank you for your contribution.

So what was it you were trying to say? None of the people you mentioned have been the lead in anything, they are primarily guest character actors. Even Christina is only the fourth or fifth credited actor on Mad Men.

Can you name any guest actor from Firefly who has been more prolific than Mark?

First person who came to mind, wow! Sorry to hear of his passing, though. Isn't he at least the 2nd actor to have played on Firefly who has since passed ? Or am I thinking of another show.

It's probably not even close. Mark's been in damn near everything. Even Dr Who.

Christina, on the other hand, I bet is a close second , when it comes to recognizably.

JSF didn't say anything about who was most recognizable. The word used was prolific.

Mr Pennell, (Murphy), even had his own card in the Firefly Board Game (Blue Sun Expansion). I didn't know he passed. Very sorry. He was only on a few moments but he stole the episode.

That's what I really love about Joss and his ability to find the right actor for the right part. Yeah, the part of a trade baron wasn't but a couple of scenes, and nothing really to do w/ the main story, but it really was a bright , memorable side moment. Well written, just long enough, and w/ the right actor playing the part...

Joss seems to excel at those moments.

So, I agreed with you, but then tacked on the addendum of Christina being recognizable. Separate from prolific, as she's not been in nearly as many different shows, but I bet public awareness of her is pretty high. Not from doing so many different jobs, but for the high popularity of her show and character on Mad Men.

Why does this have to be a thing ? I agreed w/ you!

Larry Pennell was one of the busiest actors in Hollywood in the 50's - 70's.

Larry and Ken Curtis in Ripcord

Larry and Betsy Jones-Moreland in The Outer Limits

Larry and Nancy Kulp in The Beverly Hillbillies

Larry and Ed Platt in Thriller

Larry and Karen Grassle in Little House On The Prairie

RapKnight has captured better than I the essence of the reason I wanted to make this pair of threads.
One of the more endearing facets of Firefly, and I had not seen enough of it here yet.
So far I am very happy and heartened by the replies. Thanks all.

There are so many wonderful Guest Stars that I do often forget the actual focal character of the whole Episode Shindig - played by Larry Drake. I had enjoyed him from LA Law and his films, and enjoyed seeing him in the cast credits, but Murphy sticks in my mind so much more. His comments to Banning are so succinct.

Who's Banner?

Banning Miller was played by Kim Onasch.

Murphy said "I cannot abide useless people". Oh really? Look at that beautiful girl ... useless? I so beg to differ.

His verbal attack on Banning, basically calling her a slut in front of her friends at the social event of the season, was so over-the-top nasty and ungentlemanly she should have kicked him hard in the nuts.

He implied, to all who know her best, that she may be frivolous with her womanly gifts. His verbal joust likely landed closer to the mark than anyone , including Banning, would like publicly known. She had no come back, because he was probably right.
