Just in case Joss and I have the same low taste in reading material.

I wanna go on record as knowing how Jim Bowie fought duels with swordsmen.

Jeff
Who will empty his rifle, shotgun and pistol before he considers using his Swiss Army Knife (TM) as a weapon.

Let's see, I might know this one. He invented the Bowie knife, right? And wasn't it primarily a throwing weapon?

He and his brother Retzin, though I suspect the smith had a hand in as well. THROWING WEAPON? ARGGGG! (Time out to mourn the proper education of the youth of the USofA..sigh) One does not throw a knife, except under very despirate circumstances. Throwing "knives" are essentially toys, made of soft steel and in a class with darts as an amusement. Hatchet throwing is much more fun.

Who prefers the Ka-bar. It's relatively expendable.

Well, I got the notion from an old Mack Reynolds story, so blame him.

If throwing knives are "toys", a lot of illusions are due to be shattered. Stephen Coonts's latest features a Marine who keep a throwing knife in the small of his back.

Once Jim Bowie threw his knife. He was wounded and wanted to cross the River Styx with a full set of sideboys, just in case he was dead already. Blade weapons kill by loss of blood, usually. As has been observed by one of my favorite author's (Donald Hamilton) characters (Matt Helm) a few inches of not so sharp steel flying around at the right moment can be valuable. Advise, never carry a weapon in the small of your back (SOB carry) this puts a very hard lump of steel where you need it the LEAST if you fall and land flat on your back.

Who favors the shoulder rig..see picture above.

Well, maybe it was up his sleeve. Damn, and I was just becoming a Coonts fan.
