After careful review on the VCR (Hey, I'm old fashioned) I note the following ordnance being brandished.

After the bar fight confrontation scene: Obnoxious Bald Guy, Wildly Gas Operated Pistol.
His left hand man, Old AMT Long Slide copy of Browning M1911A1. His right hand man, a Glock or copy with similar front of slide.

Zoe: A rifle cut down for use as a pistol. Note, in the melee inside Serenity she had a weapons cycle problem. Her stock is too short to anchor the weapon while she works the lever. Wonderful!

Alliance "Marshalls?" A formerly importable Heckler & Koch HK 94 carbine with an aftermarket barrel shroud fitted.

Thugs in melee. Ugly tattooed thug, weird looking knife. Beret wearing thug, commercially modified, Class III, short barrelled Rem 870 pump action shotgun. Excellent Close Quarters weapon. Thug run down by 4x4 cycle, Ruger GP-100 .357 Magnum 6" barrel in stainless steel. Other thug, some sort of semi-auto.

Sherriff, some medium frame semiauto in cross draw holster, and what looks like a Winchester or clone lever action rifle at conclusion.

Note: Of the crew of Serenity only Mal, Zoe and Jayne seemed to be armed.

I think those were supposed to be soldiers, not marshals.

Half the reviews of The Train Job

http://www.slayage.com/news/020921-fireflyreviews.html

complain about all the "obsolete" weapons. A lot of comments on Slashdot in the same vein.

Obviously neither Simon nor Book is going to pack a gun. Kaylee would not seem to be a gun person, and River is someone you don't allow to fiddle with dangerous toys. I'll bet Inanda has something that's easy to conceal, in case a "client" gets out of hand.

I find it puzzling that Mal, Zoe, and Jayne, always go armed, even when the ship is in flight. Must be rather inconvenient. But the same is true of that coat Mal never seems to take off.

Thanks for the info. For all the hard work, you get a...well, I'm sure someone will get back to you.

I guess that dispels any myth that most of the weapons are revolvers. I'll have to rewatch this episode since I honestly wasn't paying attention to the weaponry.

Do you think that the Alliance would have access to, or would use, a weapon like the H&K G11, the "experimental" automatic rifle that fires caseless rounds? It definitely would add to the futuristic aspect of the series. Of course it'd be another thing for the creators of the show to get their hands on one.

You've got twelve more episodes to identify weapons. Next week should be interesting, the Reavers are supposed to be in it and I don't have any clue what kind of weapons they would use.

Well, since the Reavers are supposed to be fatalistic, suicidal crazies, with a hint of serial killer, they probably carry whatever weapons were lying around in the last place or ship they raided.

I went over the tape and I thought the "Colonel" in charge of the massive Alliance ship called them "Marshalls" and said they had business elsewhere. Simon and Book are passengers, not crew, but I would expect the whole crew to be armed at all times. Hijacking remember?

Jeff
Who notes in the recent aircraft hijackings, the cabin attendents were the ones who got beaten up and tortured. Let's give the whole plane crew the option of being armed. Hell, let's arm the whole US Population, of good citizens and true.

I'm told the H&K G11 has a very good "Hollywood" that is an apparent copy that actually shoots LP gas. Much better than using real weapons modified to shoot blanks. Cross Reference: John Eric Hexum.

One of the details that didn't get shown with the pilot is that Simon joined Serenity as a passenger, but has since signed on as ship's doctor. Anyway, as a believer in personal freedom is Mal gonna tell passengers they can't carry?

Sure hijacking is an issue. So they'd go armed when there are other ships around. But it's pretty hard to sneak up on somebody in deep space.

Think I spotted another one. In No Way Out, the U.S. remake of La Femme Nikita (the French movie, not the Canadian TV show), our anti-heroine seems to use one in her first assasination. When she's done with it she throws it in a river.

I'm innured to movie violence, so all the bloody death in the proceeding scene was no big deal. But throwing $2K worth of gun in a river! No! Avert your eyes!

My apolgies to Wildey (note correct spelling) they've been around over 20 years now, in a very quiet way. I confess I've never seen one of their pistols in real life. But, I am assured by experts http://communities.prodigy.net/sportsrec/gz-directory.html that they do exist.

OK, I'm not a gun person, but the Wildey strikes me as a weapon with a limited appeal. That ant-recoil system is very clever, but most people aren't going to have the patience to learn to manage it. Plus, I assume that $2K is at the high end for a personal firearm. So the only customers would be pistol geeks with deep pockets, or people who engage in sports (like pistol hunting) where the Wildey excels.

actually, the wildey does not excell for hunting, or else it would be used more often. The rugers, freedom arms, and desert eagles in autos are WAY more popular. But gunnuts will allways spend money on something that is well made, even if they have no real use for it. But there are many other guns that resemble a wildey from a distance.
