Having watched a Marvel Cinematic Universe sandwich of "End of the Beginning","Captain America: The Winter Soldier", and "Turn, Turn, Turn" over the last week, I was amazed at the scope and integration of storytelling.

Looking back, this entire season of SHIELD in general, and the "Clairvoyant" arc in particular, dealing as it did with questions of trust and betrayal, formed an excellent wide-canvas thematic prelude to the events of CA:TWS. I predict the remaining season-one episodes, will serve as both an epilogue of that film, and a further prelude to upcoming MCU events and themes. Yeah, it took Joss & company a while to find their sea legs, but in the last few episodes, they haven't just learned to run, they've begun to dance!

Despite their (apparently) weak ocernight ratings(which aren't so bad once you consider the TIVO/DVR/On Demand replay factors), I think SHIELD will get a second season, because after "Guardians of The Galaxy" in August, it's going to be the better part of a year before "Avengers: Age of Ultron" premiers. From Disney/Marvel's corporate point of view, keeping a loss-leader series alive to to bridge that gap in the public consciousness isn't a bad investment.

Joss and company were actually hampered in their storytelling on SHIELD due to the theatrical schedule of The Winter Soldier. The rest of the season should be quite a ride. I really don't care what the ratings are since I am positive it will get another season. It's an in-house production of ABC/Disney/Marvel, so they will be able to absorb the relatively high cost in spite of low ratings.

Since so few are posting here, I'll just tack this on to this thread.

A minor point, but when Fitz and Simmons were following Coulson out in the wildreness of nowhere Canada, Simmons made the off hand comment " At least we still have each other " , to which Fitz replied " Yeah, good. 'Cause the last thing I want is for things to change."

( Sounds like the two are clearly agreeing on this point, right ? Guess again )

Simmons replies " Fitz, it’s too late for that "

Wait, what ?? Is she talking about how the whole world is turning upside down, w/ SHIELD being put through a blender, OR ... is she referring to her and Fitz ?

Because i'm all manner of lost on exactly where they stand w/ each other, and if Fitz is carrying a torch for Simmons that can't be returned in kind ? Which begs the question... what the hell did she mean when she said they STILL had each other. STILL implies a continuation of what was already in place, does it not ? Or was she being flippant, and a bit sarcastic, in an off hand way, implying they really DON'T have each other, despite their current proximity to one another, and that she was trying to find something positive, when in fact, she really didn't see much to be happy about at all.

My take on that is: "they still have each other," meaning the members of their team as a working unit in spite of the rest of SHIELD being in a shambles, but "it's too late for that" means that things have already changed, since she has the hots for Triplett.

It makes sense, but it's also one of my pet peeves w/ how Joss writes. ( or how his stories end up ). There's always a odd misunderstanding, " Am I a lion ? ", or even more so, when Tracy goes and threatens Kaylee, because HE thinks they're gonna hand him over to the Alliance bounty thugs. Truth of it , MAL got Tracy killed, and for no real good reason. But anyone could have told him , right away, - ' Cops are out of their jurisdiction , and we have them more than they have us! '

But Mal didn't do that. None of them did. And Tracy, desperate as he was...well, you know the rest.

As for Simmons's comment... she was speaking TO Fitz. She COULD have said " we all have each other ", referring to the group. But she didn't. And she should have KNOWN that her words could been taken by Fitz differently than she had intended.

( Sidebar - Wasn't there already a moment in the series where Fitz basically told Simmons how he felt about her, and she gave him the ' I like you - as a FRIEND ' brush off ? )

As for Triplett... isn't this sort of Fred and Gunn, all over again ? With Fitz playing the role of Wesley ?

So , does this mean Simmons is next up for the Whedon death pool ?

" shipper " ? Not sure I've heard that term before.

It refers to the relationship you want to see developed in a show. It's a very common expression these days.

Simmons may be the first to die, because I'm betting she's Hydra too. The line about how she's a terrible liar and she's says "I'm getting better at it" was just a little too odd for me. Also, when Hand tests her and Triplett I felt like she knew that Hand wasn't Hydra, because someone that high up in SHIELD would be a known Hydra agent most likely. So, she just played along with the "I'm part of SHIELD" thing. What I haven't decided is if her and Ward had any idea the other was Hydra. Anyway that's my prediction and if she is Hydra I could see her getting killed over it.

I don't think she's HYDRA, but do think she will be first to die.
Actually, kinda surprised she's lasted this long.

How do you all feel about Fitz taking up the offer to become a high ranking HYDRA scientist?

Is that like 'tude?
Or 'verse?

Sorry, I don't get out much .

As for Simmons / Fitz = Fred / Wesley? Speak of the devil , look who shows up...

She looks good .

Simmons? That'd be 1 more similarity between her & Fred.

He didn't, did he? I saw it both times, didn't hear him say he would.

Why would anybody assume Hand was not Hydra? Her bosses were chock full of them.

Sorry, I meant the possiblity of Fitz taking the offer.

With everything happening, I think it's a possibility his loyalty might wane.

I see this a lot in Shield. I liked Firefly because aside from Jayne who had his uses, the crew were good people and loyal to each other. With shield I don't have a clue who to stand with. I see no one who I can be sure of and that is lousy writing. Shield is nothing but a mess and I think this is because it is easier to put out ciaos( a state of confusion and disorder) each week and pretend its exciting. There is a good movie called a Bridge to Far. I think Joss goes over the edge constantly as though he can't rain himself in. If shield is like Firefly, Joss has it in his head what it is to be about. Even if written by someone else he is pulling the strings.

I think the guy has to much on his plate so he keeps missing the mark. When I check out what he is doing with a show he seems to get it going and then it loses his attention because he is doing other things. I'm sorry but I keep following what he does and it mostly falls short.

????
I didn't understand that there was any possibility of that. Either time I watched it.
I haven't seen any clue that his loyalty to anti-Hydra forces will wane. As long as Simmons, Colson are still anti-Hydra in his view, I don't see him waning. Those who are acting or simulating Hydra are risking losing his loyalty.

Miker - Great reference w/ A Bridge Too Far. One of my fav war movies.

Also, save for possibly Coulson, I've not come to care much about ANY of the other characters, and that includes Skye. And I STILL don't know what Coulson is, or what's been implanted into his brain, w/ out his knowledge. We think we know, but there could be more to THAT story .

I suppose, for all his 'compartmentalizing', and flaws therein, we're suppose to ultimatly trust in Nick Furry, and by extension, Agent Coulson.

From day 1, I wasn't a fan of Agent Ward. Character took himself too seriously for my likes ( I guess I've been watching too much ARCHER )

I'd live to have known more about Melinda May, early on. After all I've seen, she still seems like a piece of dry toast. Not terrible, but I won't bother getting interested unless I really must.

Just about anything is possible since we know so little about any of the characters. As for Fitz, he has a connection with Simmons even if it's only in his head, and if he loses that there is no telling where he might go from there.

Perhaps that's it. Maybe the writers or executives are not to happy with the cast and wish to change it? Perhaps some do not like the direction the show was going and shaking things up this way allows them to change direction? Here's to hoping for the best.

What Would Mal do ?

not been impressed much with the series as a whole..can't really get into any of the characters the way i instantly did with Firefly.

that said, I give this week's episode 3 thumbs up just seeing Amy on there...why Joss hasn't found a serioulsy great role for her is still a mystery.. I know.. Much ado...and while that flick was tough to watch in the old Shakes english...she was absolutely wonderful.. can't help but fall in love...

Once I found Serenity

Fury's alive, no wait, Fury's dead, no wait Fury's alive, no wait Fury's dead. This is a show struggling to find it's way. I like pretty girls ( Firefly Fan here), but only Ming-Na Wen appears to me to be able to act. As for the guy who keeps changing loyalties; Brett Dalton. I think he is not holing his own in many of the scenes he is in. The members of the cast have to be able to act. I noticed something the last episode I watched. Some of the close ups gave it a soap opera look and to me highlighted the bad acting. My first impressions do not buy into the cast as being who they are portraying. That is why I use the casts real names instead of their characters and that is the kiss of death for a show. I don't even know who the guy is that is turning into the robot but he sucks, sucks, sucks, and so does the writing for him. I also need people I can champion to get behind a show. Clark Greg may fill that role if they stop messing with his character. I want the show to work but as for now, it does not float my boat.

I felt the cast of Firefly new who there characters were. That is good writing that allows that. The bad acting in Shield may be due to the writers not letting the cast settle into who the character is they are supposed to be portraying. Instead I feel they keep the actors guessing themselves.
