There hasn't been an announcement about this, but does anyone else think that there might be a re-release of the boxed set of the series when the movie draws closer, or more ads in magazines or online?

I doubt it. I don't know if Joss gets any say in it or if it would be up to Fox. If it's up to Joss then I'd say no. He just doesn't seem to be the money grubbing George Lucas type. Not that I would mind spending more money on a new box set. Especially if it had new commentaries and extras.

I can see them re-releasing the DVD boxset and advertising it when Serenity is successful. They'd be stupid not to cash in. I don't think they'd make it significantly different, maybe new packaging.

Personally I wouldn't be tempted by new extra features. I think the extras on the current boxset are great but it's the episodes that matter.

I thought that Fox skimped on the extras. They really could have done a lot more.

Could you give us a for instance? With so few actual episodes I'm not sure there was all that much else to give us in terms of "extras."

I think the one DVD extra that could have been expanded was the blooper reel - the scene where Mal appears & re-appears & re-appears in the scene from the `Message` episode cracks me up everytime I see it - it looked like it had the same effect on the crew too

I think there could possible be more commentaries done too

maybe more behind the scenes stuff too - those are just my views.

I'd like a different cd case setup. Having four different cases is odd. I'd rather have a larger, nicer-looking, fold-out that could hold all the disks... like the LOTR extended case.

More commentaries? The set has 6 commentaries, including one spanning the whole of Serenity, which is more than almost all of the Buffy/Angel sets which ran for 22 episodes...

The extras that they had on the current set are very brief. The look into the ship is minimal, and there's only (IMO) one good documentary on the series. I felt that they could have covered things better.

I really hate cardboard DVD cases. They're not that durable. I prefer a plastic case because they keep the disc safer from dry and wet hazards. Futhermore, I like my coverart prestine.

Why would it need to be re-released? It isn't out of print. You can buy it right now. In fact, I'm thinking of ordering another couple of copies. There are so many copies available that Amazon has it on sale through the end of March ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=9201).

I did exactly that - bought a second copy as my first was being leant out a lot and I was getting serious withdrawal symptoms!! Plus DVDs aren't as durable as we all think and mine was starting to get stuck a lot!

In the UK the packaging is plastic – but take it from one who knows, if you’re engaged in a war with your local postal service (lets just say they didn’t like that I bought all my Christmas presents on the internet – which they then had to deliver!) and they decide to eject your parcel from their van several streets away and them run over it – not even a plastic case can help you! Hwoon dahn postal employees!!

Must say, as a Britisher, I had some problems deciphering some of that . . “Tad?” (-pole?) a.k.a youngster, embryo, black, slimy pond-dweller??

But I take you to mean Canadian postal employees are no more mindful of a parcel's inherent (and often sentimental) value than are their English counterparts. What I find strange is that our postmen object to delivering “too much” post, which I figure gotta be their raison d’etre, their reason for living, the stuffing in their turkey of life . . . but no, they hate me for having “ a lot of post”!! Weird, I’d say . . .

This news is, however, another nail in the coffin of my hopes to emigrate to Canada when our fascist government does soemthing I really abhor (identity cards and locking people up without trial) – gotta be Canada or New Zealand and they do way too many extreme sports and spend way too much time with sheep in NZ!!

Could you give us a for instance? With so few actual episodes I'm not sure there was all that much else to give us in terms of "extras."

When the show originally aired on FOX there was a little intro where either Mal or Book spoke of what the show is about. They spoke of the year in which the story takes place, the civil war, and about the two sides of the war. They also introduced the characters and then the ship. Then Book would end the commentary with "A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying". And Mal would end his commentary with "You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is". I was expecting both introductions to be on the DVD box set.

I'd buy it again with expanded commentary. I was saying exactly that to my husband last night.

I would love to have full commentary, even alternate commentary on eps already commented on.

Hell, they could talk about the show all day in every combination imaginable and I'd listen to it.

Does anyone else watch the commentaries with the subtitles on?

Yeah, well, if nothing else I'd like somebody to tell me what was in that damn syringe. And why not some specially recorded panel discussions of the type that occur at cons? Not just the BDHs, but the technical people.

My pet peeve, by the way, is multi-disk sets that don't put the name of the episodes on the disk--watching a Buffy or Angel CD involves a grovel on the floor to find where the dumb little pamphlet dropped to.

Said as if I give a damn. If the cast and crew don’t mind there should be more. One for each episode at least. If they do mind then obviously it’s up to them, but you can’t just say, “Well this set is worse therefore one that is better than it must be good enough.”

If they don’t mind taking the time, and only they can say if they do, all that they need to do is watch an episode and be recorded doing it, they say their thoughts which most of us are interested in, then sell them to us because no one works for free.

The key question is whether or not they have a problem with doing it.

-

Also, for the record, a lot of single DVDs have more in the way of extras than the Firefly set. Don’t ask which ones, I’d have to look through not just my collection, which probably doesn’t include them, and my dad’s, which is in another house entirely. A lot is by no means most.

Even in the way of commentary I’ve seen movies not much more than two hours that had more hours of commentary. Now if they have that much to say about a mere two hours think how much there must be to say about Firefly, which ran a little bit longer.

I would love a new boxed set IF the redid the commentaries. Nothing wrong with the ones on there, but let em mix around the actors and prop and costume people so each now comments on an episode they did not comment on before. Plus extended bloopers would be nice.

The Journey is the worthier part.

The most obvious improvement they could make down the line is to remaster them all into high definition and release the box set on BluRay or HD-DVD.

Chris Buchanan said that Fox were looking into how they could best earn money from the show (here's a hint chaps, release the original pilot Serenity as a single disc tempter in the shops after the movie comes out).

I don't like those fold-out cases that were used for Buffy, X-Files, everything else. If you want disc 6 you have to spread the case out over your whole couch or floor or whatever. I love the individual plastic cases, with one disc per case, giving lots of case / disc art too. Fox done good in that regard.

Re: the extras. I never knew about those Mal / Book intros because I never saw the series on air. Those sound really cool and I sure would like to see them.

Releasing the pilot as a single-disc. This is becoming increasingly popular. I wouldn't be surprised. And I'd probably buy it too.

As for extras, one of crucial importance:

Subtitle the gorramn Chinese with translations!
That way new Browncoats won't have to search far and wide for a clue about what's being said.

I'm just sayin', that's all.

If they do that, make it a separately selectable subtitle track, below the image frame, so it doesn't spoil things for fans who prefer to watch the scene for a clue to what's being said.

The fold-outs drive me crazy! I can't open a single Buffy DVD set without at least one disc falling out and it's so awkward to handle. The four seperate slipcases are great. Plus, it facilitated my lending Firefly to friends to indoctrinate them. No way was I letting go of the whole thing at once.

Don't you find them difficult to open without putting it on a table or something? And wouldn't you rather not even bother lending them to people?

Hmm, I wonder if this design was chosed with how easy it is to lend discs specifically in mind. It wouldn't surprise me, they probably knew this show was very word-of-mouth.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I also prefer the slimline cases that Firefly came in, and I believe that more tv sets in the future will use them. Joan of Arcadia's six discs are in only three cases, and Wonderfalls' three discs are in two. Enables me to get more sets on my shelves too.

As for a re-release of the Firefly dvds, I would buy it if there were more commentaries and extras, but I would not expect the Mal and Book intros to be included. I'd be willing to bet that they were not Joss' idea in the first place and he is the one who nixed them for the dvds. I equate them to the Harrison Ford narration of Blade Runner, only there because the studio suits didn't think the viewer could figure out what was going on unless told everything.

I'd totally spring for a special edition enhanced box set. Nothing elaborate, just some fun tweaks. Commentaries on EVERY episode, a remastered 5.1 soundtrack, whatever visual HD enhancements they can get away with (they are limited to the original print, can only do so much), an isolated audio track of the music, and a few more extended candid documentaries... I was always disapointed with the tour of the ship. It does require an intact ship, but they could use the movie set, it'd cost quite a lot though, not likely to happen unless they did one for the movie dvd... Also, a nice leather-bound case would give me happy feelings in my nethers... wow that wound up dirtier than I expected...

Firefly was filmed, not videotaped. [In the commentary for Out of Gas, the director talks about colour reversal film, & in the Making Of Firefly, just after Morena talks about getting hired (9&3/4 minutes in), you can see her beeing shot with a Panavision 35mm cinema camera.] They can easily get 2K lines from 16mm film, so there shouldn't be any problem getting 1080 lines from 35mm film. The key would be, did they edit the film & produce a film master before converting to videotape, or did they convert to videotape before editing, which would mean that any HD version would have be generated with a mathematical conversion factor.

Hey, don't be hatin' on George.
You need to think about something: George doesn't need to "grub" money.
He's got more money than his kids will know what to do with.
Me? I'm not mad at George for making money.

No one has been forced to spend money on George's stuff.

You think Joss is writing Firefly to not make some money? You think he wrote and directed Serenity FOR FREE?
This is his job. He's SUPPOSED to make money.
Just like George Lucas.
You think Joss and Universal don't hope that Serenity doesn't become the next Big Franchise?

We don't hate Lucas for making money. We hate him because he refuses to respect the creative work of another artist vastly superior to himself: i.e. George Lucas from twenty years ago.

He could make all the alterations he wants, he could replace every single character with Jar Jar's extended family, just as long as he releases the original versions in a nice, crisp, Hi Def format.

As is now painfully obvious, he no longer has any grasp of what is good and not good. Sometimes he hits the mark, sometimes the average three year old would be better at his job. But all we really want is the original films as they were originally presented.

And since there are more than 6 episodes, yes MORE COMMENTARIES.

That other things are crap doesn't mean everyting should be.

On every single 22 episode season of Stargate there is commentary.

Not before, it would only add confusion.

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

*doesn't hold breath for ...snip irrelevancy... HD Firefly*

I won't hold my breath 'til the manufacturers agree on a standard for HD-DVD but, based on the high incidence of reorders of Firefly, I think it's a good candidate for an HD transfer. Perhaps more likely if Universal buys full rights from 20th Century Fox; after all, we & the distributor would want more special features on a new edition, probably requiring further participation from Joss & our BDHs. I'm hopeful.

Keep the Shiny Side Up . . .
