Leave it to our government to invent something like Agent Buzz (whatta name) which is supposed to render the enemy useless, but actually it makes them MORE effective and they end up using it on themselves.

That is what the article says, right? Is it serious? If so, too funny. In a really really scary way.

No, not more effective on BZ. just hyper agressive. As likely to attack their own side as anyone else. Also, less able to fight efectively.

There were other drugs mentioned in the article that would have various effects that might be helpfull to a suicide fighter that may have been confusing.

This isn’t the 1st time the US Military has gone up against enemies on drugs. During Somalia enemy fighters would take this stuff called Khat (I think that’s how its spelled) that would make them very hard to take down. In the words of Jayne “saw that coming…”

Apparently the Fox programming executives have been taking this drug, too, given their cancellation of some of the best stuff on TV.

Not a new concept--the kamikazes used saki to take the rough edge off.

Fighters in relatively unstructured paramilitary organizations that can't count on organization, logistics or (air or ground) support to clinch a victory (who else would become a suicide bomber?) often rely on chemical "enhancers". Kind of odd, really, that they're being used in a culture that eschews recreational drugs AND alcohol, but then Islam supposedly also eschews the killing of innocent civilians. . .

Seen 'Conspiracy Theory' a few too many times, have we?
Next I'll hear that we're developing microwave guns for combat- right? And robots to use them....

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me in the least Chrisisall

Don't know about microwave guns, but in the early '70s, (a time of campus riots,) word was the military was researching the resonant frequency of the human rectal sphincter muscle, with a view to creating a "sonic cannon" that would render mobs incapable of combat. Problem was that frequencies that low are nearly omni-directional, so it impacted the folk deploying it as well as the rioting mob.

Just telling you what I heard years after from an eminent acoustician.

Actually, many of the armed robberies committed in the US are done by people who get all "hopped up" on crack, coke, etc. so they can get up the nerve by feeling invincable.

"The last thing I want is that any of our descendents should look back in some years and despise us for not daring to act when we had so much capacity to act. We must dare to seek how, why and on what we agree. We shall thus be able to join together to look for alternative solutions and new ways of managing the world's challenges. Being diverse is our richness, acting together will be our strength". (Federico Mayor; 02-04-01;

You have to remember, the government that started this whack-a-doo chemical program was the same government that tried to assassinate Fidel Castro with both an exploding cigar AND an exploding conch shell. I am absolutely, 100% not kidding.

In other words, no idea is so ludicrous that *some* government employee won't think that it sounds like a good thing to spend millions of dollars on.

Regarding the parallels between "Agent Buzz" and the Pax in "Serenity", it is kinda creepifying to think about.

The celts where seen as Barbs to the Romans, one reason being they had their wine pure, fresh, and unwater, in other words super strong, and they were feared because they seemed without feer willing to die instead of back down even if the odds were very far away from their favour. One reason has been thought to be the super strong wine took the fear away.

BLINKER

So in some folk, it causes such a languorous stupor that the most you can do is lie down and channel all your energy into forcing yourself to breathe, whereas in others, it causes a hyperaggressive berserker fury?

Huh. Nope, can't say I've ever heard of anything like that before. *whistles*
