i have heard from three sources (completely untrustworthy) that sci-fi network is looking into Firefly as a possible replacement for stargate. is there any (ANY) possibility this could happen?

Mastenawba,

I've been told by veteran Browncoats on the OB
( Original Firefly Board ) that ...

as soon as there is the tiniest hint that something is on the horizon that has to do with FF/S that those BC's will leap into action and we other BC's won't know what
hit us.

That there are members of our fandom in "the Industry" and they've been proven to work like a machine when necessary.

I'm paraphrasing but you get the idea...

I take that to mean that if and when there is anything to a rumor that they'll let us know if it's true and what to do.

To see the post I've pulled this from go to:

http://forums.prospero.com/foxfirefly/messages?msg=36149.457

I don't know if you have to be a member of that message board to see that or not.

I think we have folks in place who will let us know if there is a possibility of more happening.

Otherwise, I'm like RedHead... I hope fervently for some kind of return of the best thing I've ever watched in my life.

That is such a difficult forum to follow. I registered there long ago, I don't think I've posted more than once or twice.

No doubt there are a lot of people 'in the know' in the Industry that will post everywhere if there is new news.

Not to mention I envision a post by Joss would be in order on Whedonesque.

I'd sure not be able to contain the news!

Yeah, I'm quite sure Whedonesque would be the first place to get the news. Considering Joss posts there and all:)

The Sci-Fi channel is far too cheap to support a new Firefly series.

Yep, they're cheap and they'd cut the show to about 38 minutes to allow for 22 minutes of their stupid ads. Also would have to "go cheap" on the casting...ie:

Jason Bateman : Mal
Robin Givens : Zoe
Paul Reubens : Wash
Robert Guillome: Book
Tina Yothers : River
Danny Bonaduce : Jayne
James Brolin : Simon
Tara Reid : Kaylee
Elvira : Inara
Michael Richards: Guest Reaver

The question is, would we want to see a cheap version of our BDS?

Your cast list is both hilarious and inspirational, and therefore I would make bold to offer one addition:
Gary Coleman: Badger

Thanks for the chuckle!

It was like that when we got here!

Gorram it..how could I forget Gary Coleman? He would actually pay Sci Fi for the work.

I also heard this was the case from several unreliable sources. With Battlestar Gallactica having one season left, and SG ending Sci-Fi is looking for something with an already established fan base to dump the BSG/Stargate money into and it would be oh so shiny if they picked up Firefly.

Sci-Fi is cheap but remember the original firefly had a next to nothing budget anyways.

The pilot cost 4 million I believe, and each consecutive episode rounded out to 1 to 2 million each. You really should look more into things before you post.

While he was not right about Firefly having a next to nothing budget, Stargate SG1 is more expensive to make.

From this article:

Stargate SG-1 is a mature series and production costs continue to mount: it's budgeted for at least $2 million U.S. per episode.

That is a next to nothing budget for a tv show. I mean Gorram, Farscape cost that much, stargate and BSG cost more then that to mak. So jus' maybe it shuld be you who checks their facts first.

Fox might still own the rights to the TV show. Buying those rights from Fox would be a bitch and a half. I'd prefer to see the show in FX. FX only releases one (two max) big show(s) a season, and they market them into being smash hits. Look at Rescue Me, Nip Tuck, The Riches, The Shield, ect.

Fox may be hesitant to sell the rights to Firefly... But they didn't want to give up Sliders either.
After the treatment Fox gave to Firefly, Sliders, Family Guy, and most recently, Drive... They are boycotted in my house.

Ah, but you forgot Futurama in that list of things FOX has killed in a horrible fashion.

But yeah, I think that Sci-Fi would work fine for a return of Firefly. Stargate has always had a huge budget, and if you look at some of the things they've done on BSG, I think it'd work well.

On the topic of SG1... Didn't that show originate on Showtime? Maybe I'm just confused.

i'm pretty sure joss would make firefly with sock puppets if that's what it took to get it back on air. the budget aint the issue.
it's ownership and actor availability.

{oh and is it me or does joss seem kinda blacklisted...)

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I had always assumed that Firefly had a rather high budget as tv shows go, it certainly looked like it. But in one of the companion books, I believe it was Firefly Volume 1, Joss said that it had a lower budget than Buffy on the WB, and that had to be fairly low by tv standards.

Don't forget that the majority of the pilot's budget, along with subsequent episodes, was the design and building of the sets + the special effects, but Zoic should have most of that saved for eventual reuse if Firefly or Serenity is ever revived.

Yeah, I really think ya'all need to be looking at the availability of the actors at the moment, they are all doing their thing with up and coming shows (desperate housewives, Chuck, Terminator), but, the reasoning behind the idea is kinda juicy, so its not impossible, I'd certainly like to see it happen. Just anywhere but fox.

I love my captain

As to SciFi losing SG-1 and BSG, I think they're trying to fill the gap with Flash Gordon. I don't think it's quite up to the task. Judging by the pilot, it's not bad but it's also not that good. Forgetable so far.

As hs been mentioned here, there is also the issue of availability. Most of our cast is gainfully employed right now. It would be nice to get them all back together for another go at a show though. Wouldn't a "special television event" be nice? Something longer than a mini-series but shorter than a full season. Fourteen new episodes for Joss to do with as he pleases. That would be so shiny.

eeeeeee don't even say Flash Gordon is "forgettable"...it doesn't deserve that. Neither does "Painkiller Jane", a sad watered-down version of a great comic book.

I think Firefly would be great project for Sci-Fi, but don't forget that Sci-Fi hasn't exactly shown a great amount of intelligence when working with its hit shows. Listen to the cast of BSG..almost every one of them has said that Sci-Fi screwed up on their scheduling, marketing, support, etc etc for the show. Sci-Fi had their first BONAFIDE hit, and they had no clue what to do with it.

The (rumored) decision to split the final BSG season over two years is another example of bad marketing choices..the show's a hit, but doing something like that is going to alienate the casual viewership. They're not going to watch ANOTHER season of re-runs and come back with enthusiasm in 2009. It just doesn't work that way.

As for my personal opinion, I think the actors would do more (though the BDCE commentary didn't make it sound like they were pining for it like Joss, especially with Nathan), and we all know Joss would do more, but I'm not holding my breath. FOX still owns the tv show, and they're more likely to sit on a possible hit than turn it over to another network. That's the whole thought process behind "development deals" with actors and such..better to pay them to do nothing than have them go elsewhere and be successful. I don't see why it would be different with Firefly.
