A few Browncoats from NC are organizing support for a 3-episode Firefly miniseries! It looks to be a serious production, something the fans can all stand behind and be proud of. It'll be released for free once it's done, but right now these guys need donations to make the dream a reality.

"Firefly:Origins is a 3-part miniseries to be released for free on Youtube documenting the adventures of a young Malcolm Reynolds, as he finds himself drawn into the war for independence against the Alliance. It takes place in the early years of the Unification War, over a decade before Firefly takes place."

"This project will only be funded if at least $75,000 is pledged by Sun, May 18 2014 11:01 PM CDT."

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

It doesn't matter if they release it for free. FOX still has the rights to the title "Firefly" and all related characters. If they won't let individuals make and sell Jayne hats, what makes you think they will allow any filmed production that uses protected intellectual properties?

For the same reason we're allowed to make fanfiction: it's totally free. We have fun and get something out of it, and if anything Fox benefits from renewing love for their show.

So what we've seen is that it CAN be done! I've actually been able to help work on the script behind this planned miniseries, and it's absolutely what we've been waiting for. For instance, in the first episode we get

1) How Mal first got his browncoat
2) Hilarious Firefly-style dialogue
3) An opening fight scene sequenced to match the Serenity theme

and then as the story continues in other episodes, more cool new things like bounty hunters, Mal's hometown, Alliance cruisers, attempted planetary genocide, high-speed missile chases (and crashes), massive amounts of destruction (both CGI and actual explosives), and a Firefly. If any of those things appeal to you...help make it happen. With David West on board to direct, what we're going to get is exactly what we've wanted.

Only 1934 people have watched the firefly fan video Bellflower, Part One on youtube.
Bellflower, Part Two has been seen by 945.
Watch the video to become a member of a very select group.
To keep it in prospective, in two days 7,055 people have seen Lego Serenity time-lapse build.

The numbers for Origins don't look too promising. As for Bellflower, I really enjoyed those two episodes and was looking forward to a third, but their site seems a bit scarce on any new updates:

I think Origins is asking for too much relative to what they have proven they can do.
If you look at the round up of Firefly fan films here
http://fireflydvd.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4887
I can tell you that none of them ever received $75,000 in seed money based on nothing but a promise.
Browncoats: Independence War already had a ton of film in the can
(using blank firing weapons and some major props like real armored vehicles)
when they launched their Kickstarter campaign.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/829136455/browncoats-independence
-war-a-firefly-fan-film

They raised $21,000.

If the Origins folks want a shot, I think they need to make substantial progress on a volunteer level, to prove that they can produce a film effort deserving of fan support. If the actors and scripts are substandard, all the money in the world won't elevate the project.

So, my suggestion is put a few short character sketches out there on video,
and if the Firefly fan community finds the effort intriguing and worthy,
Origins will likely garner some support
(tho' I still doubt $75,000 worth........)

Also;
I've noted in a number of places,
I prefer Firefly fan films that introduce new characters;
and I mean REALLY new characters, not just switching up the SERENITY crew.

But, there is an eight and a half minute Mal and Zoe origin story
already out there:

titled "Cache".

All the characters in Origins are original except Mal. There's new independent Jack Hinson, Alliance Admiral Sherman, The Preacher, pilot Stanley Cross, and a host of other new characters good, bad, and ugly.

A character sketch between Mal and Stanley Cross will be posted shortly, to give an example of dialogue and acting abilities.

Um there's a reason for that. And it has nothing to do with fan interest in Firefly related stuff waning either ......

Also LEGO is a universally known item. Most adults remember playing with Lego. It's an institution, dare I say, even bigger than Star Wars.

The Jayne hat issues had little do with Fox flexing their muscle. A company paid for the rights to the hat and started making them for sale. They're the ones who asked FOX to do a "cease and desist" against fans who were making and selling the hats (important distinction) for profit on Etsy. This company had every right to stop people from selling what they paid the licensing fee for. But they asked FOX to protect their IP on the behalf of a rightful licensee.

I find it astonishing just how much resistance and false legal theory, that folks in the Firefly fandom hurl about when it comes to fan films. They don't have this sort of negativity when it comes to the TONS of Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman, Spiderman, Marvel, Halo, Mortal Kombat, Predator, etc. etc. fan films that are all over the place.

Any corporation 'can' try to declare another production a violation of their IP. Remember that George Lucas tried to SUE the original Battlestar Galactica as being too 'close to Star Wars'. We all know how he made out on THAT claim ;) Nowadays, it's a matter of PR. The violation must be clear, unambiguous, for profit or damaging to the brand. Little fan films are like fan fiction. If there is no profit, then you're in the same club as the guy who builds a perfect Darth Vader costume, without first securing rights from Lucasfilm (Now Disney) and walking around a convention with it on.
