Fans of the new FOX show Firefly came out in force to support a recent fund-raising effort to keep the show on the air. One fan even bought a television ad that urges people to tune in to Firefly's Friday night broadcast.

Mike Morrow of Wellston, Ohio, purchased an ad on his local cable access channel. The ad, which appears roughly 130 times per day, displays a picture of the Firefly cast and urges viewers to watch the show.

Mr. Morrow says he decided to support the show because it's fresh and unpredictable. "Most shows on television have become homogenized and sterile," he says. "Firefly makes me feel like a kid again."

Mr. Morrow spent $150 of his own money on the ad, which will reach more than 8,000 homes in the Ohio counties of Jackson, Vinton, and Pike. He said he'll keep running it until Firefly is picked up for a full season.

In a larger bid for publicity, fans raised $3,000 for an ad in Variety. Allyson Beatrice, a devoted Firefly fan, donated autographed scripts and a crew-only t-shirt from her personal collection. The items were auctioned on eBay. Fans bid generously, exceeding the $3,000 goal.

The money will be used by the Firefly: Immediate Assistance campaign to purchase a full-page ad in Variety, urging FOX and advertisers to keep Firefly on the air. Campaign organizers hope the ad will let FOX executives know the sci-fi/western show has a large, devoted audience.

The ad will appear in the December 9 edition. The excess funds and future donations will go toward more publicity.

Firefly can be seen on FOX, Friday nights at 8:00 ET. More information is available at www.fireflysupport.com.
