It looks like the Grim Reaper is finally winning one from those at Mutant Enemy, the company responsible for the production of Firefly. In an article published on SCIFI.COM, ME CEO, Christopher Buchanan, said things are "looking pretty grim right now." And we can't blame the folks at ME for not trying. All the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and UPN) were contacted and all have turned them down to revive Firefly. There was no mention of WB, but I'm pretty sure that the WB is still a bit sore about Buffy's move to UPN to even consider taking on another Joss Whedon series.

Why aren't the big networks interested? "The cost of the show, the timing, the fact that we didn't finish a full season and have other networks out there figuring out what they have in terms of pilots, what they have in terms of their own series cancellations. Timing is just horrible," said Buchanan. So what are the chances of Firefly appearing elsewhere? Perhaps on cable or syndication? Probably not in its current form with a production cost of about $2 million per episode.

"We've gone so far as to explore the options in terms of, ... without going into great detail, everything from could we move the show to Canada? ... But the reality is, it's a pretty expensive show. And the budget would have to come down significantly. And just given [FOX's] investment and all the people involved and stuff, it's pretty unlikely that we would go on, I think, in syndication."

There's really little left that fans of the beloved series can do at this point to bring Firefly back. A recent announcement on the Firefly: Immediate Assistance website concedes that "while we did not succeed in finding the show a new network, we have accomplished much" in spreading awareness and prolonging the life of the series.

What now? There's still a flicker of hope left and three more unaired episodes. I'll keep you all posted as to when those will air. After that, perhaps lights out. We'll see.

BONNIET

Many people over at the Fox/prospero boards are sending Fox postcards in a last-ditch effort to get the three remaining episodes shown on Fox. If that happens, there's a possibility we can get the ratings up. Send your postcards to Gail Berman, President, Fox Entertainment, Box 900, Beverly Hills, CA 90213

Alternate address: Fox Broadcasting Co., 10201 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035

If we make enough noise, we could get our last 3 episodes at the very least!
