There's a rumor going around that the USA Network and the Sci-Fi Channel has picked up Joss Whedon's "Firefly" in a repurposing deal. The deal will allow both networks to re-broadcast episodes of Firefly several days after their original run on FOX. Both networks will be paying anywhere between $100,000 to $150,000 for the encore broadcast. The payments will offset the cost of producing the $1.3 per episode original science fiction series.

This is a *very* good thing. It means that they have a commitment to the other channels that means that it will air for at least one season, and will gain a bigger audience with the exposure on said channels.

This was a very important decision. I'm glad it was made early.

That's great, because there are so many series I want to see on Fridays that I don't know how I'm going to tape them all!

I'm wondering if the same thing is going to happen here in Canada with Space: The Imagination Station( http://www.spacecast.com ), our version of the Sci-Fi Channel. I hope they do, presently they air series such as Farscape, Buffy (in syndication), Angel and Enterprise to name a few.

It's great for those who miss the episode the first time, and they can tape the eps for those of us who miss 'em.

You need to reread the original article at Futon Critic more carefully. The repurposing deal for "Firefly" only deals directly with Sci-Fi, not USA Network.

Futon Critic had mentioned USA Network because of its repurposing pick-up of Michael Mann's new show "R.H.D./L.A."

To reiterate: repeats of "Firefly" will air on Sci-Fi later in the week, but there will be no additional repeats on USA.

It's worth mentioning that USA and Sci-Fi are both owned by Barry Diller's media conglomerate, USA Networks.

Actually, that's out of date, they just changed their name to USA Interactive, and are said to be selling off their cable TV holdings. I certainly hope they sell Sci-Fi -- presumably to better managers who understand proper scheduling.

No SciFichannel must not be turning a profit since in desperation they have cancelled their best original series. They just signed Tremors the series, and have many other projects in the bag, why would they care to take on a another show with "dismal ratings".

Yeah!!! Sci-fi is going to re-broadcast Firefly! I am so deleriously happy!

NOT!!!

Well if that rumor is true then I guess we need to start with the post morteum of Firefly because with Sci-Fi's record any, I repeat, ANY and EVERY quality sci-fi series is cancelled and buried by those mismanaging buggers.

The only good news I have heard come from that network in the past six months is the wrap of shooting for the sequel to the Dune mini series that encompasses both the second and third novels of Frank Herbert's series.

But Sci-Fi in this case won't really own the show and be making the decisions about it; they're just buying the right to re-show it, while Fox still is in ownership and control of it. (Of course, that might not be very MUCH better, but still it is better than the Anti-Sci-Fi Channel...)

It would be great if Sci Fi could pick up the show. They treat the fans very well over there. I watch the channel a lot now that they have Stargate and the X-Files.

Well, it's something. At least it show that there is interest in Firefly. Sadly enough, I don't get Sci-fi channel. Obsessive sci-fi teenager = no life outside of sci-fi. My mom fears i would do nothing else... and there's the money issue. Ick. WEll, as soon as i'm outa the house, I'll get it!
