Ain't It Cool News has taken a peek at the script for the second Firefly pilot. According to AICN, the pilot isn't really a pilot at all, but more like the second episode of the series.

AICN goes on further to state that The Alliance, similar to the Empire in Star Wars, will possibly be the big bad for Firefly much like Wolfram & Hart is for Angel.

As reported previously on this website and now is confirmed somewhat by the AICN article, the second pilot draws its inspiration from The Great Train Robbery.

Quote:

Like the Corleones and the Sopranos, the crew of the Serenity indulge some legitimate activities – commercial transport among them – but in the two-hour pilot they’re seen stealing gold from a derelict ship, and in the “second pilot” the crew is contracted by a fearsome and powerful mobster named Adelei Niska to pull a train robbery!

Don't you just wish it was September already?

Well, I do wish it was September (or maybe October) already. But I really wish that Fox would start showing what they already have. Putting on fresh material in the summer has worked for them before.

As for AICN, that sounds pretty lame. Hollywood like to say, "This new show is like X only with Y." (Star Trek is like Wagon Train, only with spaceships.) The idea that a new show or movie is just a clever repackaging of old material helps them feel better about their own lack of imagination and fear of innovation. Sopranos in Space indeed!

What I wish is that Fox would start airing a decent Firefly preview. I'm sorry, but the current one holds no candle to the one for John Doe or Fastlane. Both of these shows are likely to suck, but they at least pique a certain demographic's interest in the show... and at least tell what the story is about. Advertising that Firefly is by the same "visionary creator" as Buffy the Vampire Slayer is all well and good... but I want something alluring, something substantial, something that would interest a lot of people and get those who wouldn't usually watch a sci-fi show to give Firefly a try.

Hopefully, Fox isn't depending too heavily on the Buffy demographic for Firefly's viewership. While lots of the Buffy audience might try Firefly for love of Joss, it has to be acknowledged that different fans are in it for different reasons, y'know?

It's important to grab the viewership of sci fi and western demographics, especially those who aren't really active in fandom or on the internet (or in internet fandom ). Gourd willing, the promos will improve (or at least, get longer). I've still yet to see one.

Relating the show to other shows might not be such a bad thing, though- while originality is a requisite for many people, comparing the show favorably to things that people already like can help pique interest as well.

Heh. I don't think Buffy relies on the "Buffy Demographic". Well, maybe for selling advertising, judging from the commercials. Ad agencies like neat little categories. But as for the actual viewership ...

Story: they're doing a location shoot. This querelous old man storms up, demands to know what they're doing. They think he's come to complain about the noise and traffic, but when they tell him they're shooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he just snorts, "Hmph! Best show on TV! Never miss it!" And storms off.

What you're really wishing for is that they hire PR people who understand the show and its audience. As long as we're wishing for the impossible, let's wish for World Peace!

What I really wish is they'd hire a proper web team. The Firefly area on the Fox site looks like it was put together by an intern whose design skills all come from a one-day class in Microsoft Front Page.

You do realize that gene therapy is an inevitable part of human evolution. I don't think that "genetic engineering" should be avoided at all... in fact, I think it should be touched upon in great detail. It's aspects like this that will make Firefly more interesting and more realistic.

Read this book: Sex in the Future: The Reprodutive Revolution and How It Will Change Us, by Robin Baker http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1559705779/qid=1026172766/sr=1-

It's an amazing look at the future of human reproduction (non-fiction). I love Robin Baker, though he does seem to slightly miss the ramifications of some of the technologies he predicts...

HAKEN

Likes to mess with stuffs.

I have to go and check my facts, but I'm pretty sure the Reavers in Firefly are either genetically engineered or are a result of some form of genetic mutation caused possibly by something in the Galactic Civil War.

We also know that the Alliance have experimented with genetics because of River.
