According to an article published in the Edmonton Journal, Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, and Gina Tores recently participated in an interview to sell their new scifi series to the press.

Prior to the interview, the handful of reporters present were treated to a 40 minute preview of the premiere episode which will air on September 20th on FOX.

Here's an excerpt from the article.

Quote:

For about three years, Whedon's been thinking about a series set in the future, but without the classic space gadgets which distract viewers from the real story: what humanity is like when you have to rebuild and life is hard. "We don't solve all our problems and have shiny clean spaceships in the future," he says. "It's the same as it was 100 years ago, and now."
Hence, though the transport ship Serenity does cruise the solar system, it's a utilitarian vehicle, as Fillion points out while walking me through five locations on this part of the set. First, the ship doesn't run on a rare, gem-based power cell, but on stinky fuel that pollutes. The cavernous, grey cargo hold is littered with oil barrels. Heavy iron chains hang from the ceiling. The infirmary is more like a dentist's office, circa 1950, than the sick bay we came to trust in the Star Trek franchise.

There's a grubby rec room with pin-up pictures of pretty girls and a 1960s table lamp with a hard plastic shade shaped like a mushroom. The crew quarters are small, sparse and bland as a sleeper car.

The ship, naturally, is a metaphor for Firefly. If Buffy was a coming-of-age horror story, Firefly tells the tale of stark reality, life on the edge. It's dark, it's lonely and there's no Internet.

There's another article floating around with some more FIREFLY info, but in addition, there are ANGEL spoilers, so beware.

As we all know, there are no aliens, no monsters, and no robots. The score features "roots music." What that is I've no idea. And "when things explode in space, there's no sound."

Some interesting quotes. (Stop reading halfway though, and you'll get the good stuff without reading any Angel spoilers.) It's obvious that Whedon knows about the Fermi Paradox

http://www.space.com/searchforlife/shostak_paradox_011024.html

though he either doesn't know it under that name or (more likely) he doesn't like to throw around jargon.

I'm a little confused by the picture that's beginning to emerge of Whedon's imaginary future. Unless the these journalists have it all muddled (entirely possible), all the stories take place in a single remote solar system. So the Serenity doesn't need an FTL drive, and very likely there's no day-to-day interstellar travel. Some time in the past, Earth sent out colony ships on a one-way trip, and all the characters are descendents of these colonists.

Which basically works, but the idea of single solar system with a lot of different habitable planets is just a bit of a stretch.

What did that have to do with Joss or Angel spoilers? All I saw was some guy talking about the Fermi paradox.

As far as the future Whedonverse, is it possible that there is FTL but the Serenity itself is just a sort of in-system freighter? This is set just a few hundred years or less in the future, right? So terraforming in-system isn't an option without some handy-dandy nanotech shake&bake, which doesn't seem to fit. So maybe it's a Cherryh kind of setup with lots of space stations and maybe some moonbases or domed worlds? I couldn't guarantee they exist, but I don't have a problem with a system of two or conceivably three habitable planets, but more than that seems extremely unlikely.

Weird though - I thought we were going to flit about the galaxy. But that other article mentioned liquid fuels that even "smelled bad" or something. Does the Serenity runon diesel?

The token response to the Fermi Paradox: "Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence." Though it is puzzling, there are many possible explanations.

And some contend we *are* being visited. But I think they're nuts.

Judging from screenshots, and Serenity takeoff footage on the official site, the ship has 2 different propulsion systems -- one when in atmosphere (conventional fuel), and something wholly different when in space (magic?).

Serenity does have two propulsion systems, has no one read my post in Episode Discussion?

It has two outboard engines that are the main engines in space and in the atmosphere.

It also has the main drive engine used only for boost apparently.

That is the main engine that is at the back, and it opens up when in use.

They use the Boost when in space but in the episode I saw they also used it in the atmosphere although they seemed hesitant to do that, but when you are being chased by Reavers you don't have much choice.

Out.............................

Likes to mess with stuffs.

Do you know what Serenity use as a fuel source to power its engines?

Guess nobody wants to read your spoilers. Let's just say that we respect and envy the Exalted Status you've achieved by getting invited to a press preview, and let it go at that!

Anybody whose seen the preview videos can tell that there are two sets of engines. Didn't you read all the long discussion we had on this very topic?

Many of the recent news stories refer to "stinky polluting fuel". I hope that's not supposed to be ordinary rocket or jet fuel -- Serenity obviously isn't big enough to hold enough to achieve orbit.

Kelly, the inside scoop person at the official Firefly site, doesn't seem to care much about little technical details like this. Thank God she's pretty!
