Known for his preference for picking out relative unknowns and transforming them into pop-culture icons, Joss Whedon said in a ZAP2IT.COM article that Summer Glau's only appearance on Angel was her screen test for Firefly.

"In Summer's case, 'Waiting in the Wings' was her screen test," says Whedon, who wrote and directed the episode. "Summer is extraordinary, and she was so good in that episode. I just love finding these people who've done nothing."

Summer Glau, who arrived in LA only a couple of years ago, plays a genius named River on Firefly.

I noticed that both she and Amy Acker are ballerinas from Texas. I wonder if they know each other?

Patently Whedon sees stuff the rest of us miss. Or maybe he just does a good job of mentoring his actors. When he started giving Emma Caulfield more and more screen time, I was scratching my head. I mean, she was always a decent actress, but she was nothing like the engaging spitfire she's turned into. I can think of lots of other examples, but you get the idea.

It isn't just actors were he takes unknowns and gives them an opportunity to shine. He also does that with writer/producers as well. With the exception of David Greenwalt (who was well known from The X-Files) none of the major Buffy writer/producers had really been given the chance to do well in TV, at least not for any length of time (Jane Espenson wrote Nowhere Man but that was cancelled in 1 season and David Fury was a writer/producer for HOuse of Buggin' but that lasted all of about 2 months). This is not meant as a put down to any of them but rather as a complement to Joss Whedon in recognizing talent that hasn't been given a chance. IN the realm of TV, where the usual suspects keep getting deals because they are "known" commodities (JOhn Ritter, looking at you here :) ) that is a rare, but good, thing.

Summer's from here in San Antonio, and it's GREAT to see such an incredibly talented--yet until now unknown--person finally get the break they deserve. I only hope the writers/directors/producers can provide the quality material to really let Summer show her stuff in a big way.

Summer rocks! :D
